We have just returned from a second extended family gathering for Christmas in Uppergate Barn. Last year we hoped it would live up to the expectations of a holiday home for Christmas which it more than did. This year we needed it to live up to the memories of the first visit, which it did again with ease, with the extra bonus that The Butchers Arms was open this time!
The accommodation itself is warm and welcoming and spotlessly clean. The layout makes it perfect for family gatherings with plenty of room for everyone to both spread out and come together. The lounge has a woodburner for cosy winter evenings with a plentiful supply of logs and the underfloor heating ensures every corner is warm and toasty. We found that the minstrel gallery was superb hangout for our teenage children, allowing them their own space without being in bedrooms. The kitchen is well equipped - we cooked Christmas lunch for 9 with ease.
We love the swimming pool complex - again, spotlessly clean, and the booking system means we have not yet shared the pool with other groups. The sauna is just bliss on a cold, damp day as is the hot tub. Separate towels are provided for use in the pool so you don't have to pack your own.
As teenagers, our children weren't up early enough to meet Farmer Steve and feed the animals but this would have been a big draw when they were younger as would the play equipment. They did take advantage of the games barn though, especially table tennis.
Hepworth itself is beautiful and we have found it to be a really friendly and welcoming village. There are lots of scenic and river walks right from the doorstep and we did not find it necessary to go further afield. A collection of Wellies to borrow are available in the small shop.
As mentioned above, The Butchers Arms has recently reopened and we wish it and the landlady Georgina every success. It provided everything you would want from a country pub in winter - open fires, real ales and board games. There are also at least four other drinking establishments within walking distance, making a nice little pub crawl if you feel so inclined! We ate at The Oil Can Cafe and The Fox House Inn on both visits and would definitely recommend.
We have stayed in many cottages around the UK over the years but Uppergate Barn is the only one we have thought special enough to return to. Thank you Steve, Alison and team and hopefully we will see you again soon.
