Blue Skies offers 3 very well fitted-out apartments in attractive gardens with a pool. Our party of 4 had the 3-bedroom apartment on the upper floor, very spacious indeed with a very large open-plan living room-dining area-kitchen and 2 verandas, one shaded, the other open. There is air-conditioning in the bedrooms, but just ceiling fans in the open-plan living area, so this could be a bit warm, but still OK. It all made for a very pleasant and beautiful place to relax.
Simon is a very helpful host and will sort any problems quickly. On our first full day, he gave us a tour by car of the local area, which was very helpful, and recommended local restaurants. He also gave us a local mobile phone for the duration of our stay, making it easy to contact him and other services such as taxis - I can recommend Ali who Simon arranged to collect us from the airport and also took us on a day's island tour.
Blue Skies is in a pleasant residential area between Gros Islet and Rodney Bay, but it's a hot mile-long walk to Rodney Bay centre (shopping mall) and even further to the beaches at Rodney Bay (Reduit Beach) or Gros Islet (which we found more scenic and quieter) You can get a bus most of the way to Gros Islet or Rodney Bay mall (in opposite directions) from the main highway, 5 to 10 minutes walk from the apartments, for EC$1.50. Many of the neighbours keep guard dogs and we did find the aggressive barking of dogs a nuisance.
The nearest restaurants are in the Rodney Bay Marina, just a short distance along the main highway. Closer still, there are a collection of food shacks at the end of the local road (5 to 10 minutes walk from the apartment), serving good local food in the evenings. I would especially recommend Deez Diner for Jerk chicken and pork.
Just returned from Blue skies Apartments in St Lucia. We stayed for a week in the One Bedroom apartment. Lovely light and airy ground floor apartment with well equipped kitchen area and living space with several sofas. TV and radio and good internet provided. Simon and Francine provide a great welcome and show you the apartment, they also provided a basic supply of food / milk ............very useful if you arrive late in the day. They also show you the local area in an orientation tour which is excellent service and gives a great aid to planning on when to visit during your stay.
Great location just minutes from the Marina with supermarket just a bit further. Beautiful gardens and a swimming pool which were kept spotless. All these ingredients made a great holiday for us.
For context: Family of 4 (youngsters 23 and 19) visited in Nov 2016 and stayed in the 3 bedroom unit.
Blue Skies is a very comfortable, spacious condo in a really great location. Gros Islet itself is a good location in the North......close enough to Casties, Marigot Bay, etc. and yet not right in the middle of all the hectic tourist traffic. However, keep in mind that driving to and fro from Gros Islet does take a while as there is constant traffic along the western coast of the island. In my opnion, you do need a car to get around, but one of the other guests managed without.
As other reviews mention, Simon and Francine are both very gracious and helpful hosts. They give you all the privacy you need but are just around the corner if you need something. Very prompt in getting back to us when we needed something. The tour that Francine offers is extremely helpful. We really appreciated the 'starter kit' they provide with eggs, bread, milk, butter and juice. The unit has salt, pepper, sugar. From a kitchen standpoint, we felt that it was a little light on utensils and other general kitchen stuff, but was definitely manageable. Would recommend also keeping some cooking oil, foil, saran wrap and a few more vessels/amenities.
Come prepared for mosiquitoes and other insects.....it's an island! The unit had a couple of mosquito coils and we bought some more.
We did not venture into the pool, but the other guest spent a little bit of every day there. Seemed to love it. We spent one day on a private tour with Solomon Water Taxi & Tours. All-inclusive cost of USD 550. Pick up point was Gros Islet Marina and then went down to Soufriere, headed to the mud baths (did not drive into the sulphur Volcano), lovely lunch at Solomon's mother's restaurant, a couple hours at Sugar Beach with Snorkling, an optional stop at Ans Chastanet beach for more snorkling and then back to Gros Islet. Well worth the money we spent. Also went to the Friday night Gros Islet 'street party' that Francine recommended. Can be fun if you like the drink, sway to the music kind of deal. I did not eat there, but food looked delicious. Also went to Pigeon island for 1/2 a day. The hike to the fort is easy, but the second peak is a pretty strenous 30 minute hike.
Ate at Spice of India - excellent food and service with a very classy decor. Not too expensive (USD 130 with a couple of drinks) considering prices of some of the other restaurants. Also at at Big Chef Steakhouse. Another excellent meal but on the pricier side (USD 250 with 3-4 drinks).
We just got back from a wonderful stay on the island of St Lucia where we stayed in Rodney bay at Blue Sky Apartments.
We enjoyed our two week stay in the three bedroom (up stairs) part of the villa. Having arrived just after the jazz festival we were lucky enough to have the whole place to ourselves, we could lounge around a secluded pool at our leisure. On a few occasions we visited Reduit beach at Rodney bay and on other days, we visited the rum factory, mud volcano, botanical garden and savoured the stunning scenery in the back of Ali's air conditioned people carrier.
The location of the villa is a 15-20 minute walk, or an inexpensive 2 minute local bus ride to Rodney bay, from there it's a five to ten minute walk to Reduit beach. Ideal for everyone from family's to those who like there water sports.
The villa surroundings are residential, in an affluent area, far from any touristy parts and the Marina is a short walk as well, in case you want to pop out for lunch, or grab some over priced ice cream. As we were self catering it was good to have an abundance of fast food eateries based in the medical school car park, two streets down. The jerk pork meal from the Jamaican place, enough food for a hearty feed and at 20 EC dollars ( just over £5) it was a welcome budget meal.
For those with bigger purse strings you can eat out at the many American style restaurants in Rodney bay, for those with a more sophisticated pallet, try Le Terressa a French, seafood restaurant elegantly presented food with delicate flavours and the best tasting and priced (18 EC) Pina collada on the island!!
A large supermarket is located near the villa on the way to Rodney bay, for breakfast and BBQ food, or any bits and bobs.
Anything else further a field, Castries, rum factory, botanical gardens, mud volcano just call Ali, the taxi driver. He will pick you up from the airport for the hour and half drive from the airport. His number is on the mobile Simon kindly supplies his guests during your stay. What Ali doesn't know about the island is not worth knowing. His knowledge is extensive and he's not just a driver, but a tour guide too.
The accommodation itself was spacious, with two balcony's one with shade and shelter a large kitchen diner living room leads off to the more than ample three bedrooms, as a party of 4 adults and one child we never felt cramped . The pool is suitable enough for small children with parental guidance of course and the out door jucuzi bath (not heated) was located in the perfect spot, if like me, you want shade and cooling down from the oppressive, humid conditions on sunny days.
Once a week a gardener visited to keep the garden in immaculate condition as well as a cleaner.
We did find the villa a little worn with a touch of "snagging" required throughout.
The door from the living area to the bedroom balcony was hard to close and lock and did not seem secure in my view.
We had problems with the WiFi and TV when we arrived and the air conditioner in our bedroom dripped water. After alerting Simon he was on hand both times to rectify the problems and they were resolved.
The windows in the living area were cumbersome and in some cases impossible to open and with air con only in the bedrooms, it was a daily frustration to keep the villa cool.
Our villa seemed to be missing insect screens (we had glass) at the bottom part of the windows, but featured on the two ground floor apartments below.
We also found the fridge worked at a variant of temperatures and the kitchen could have more utensils, a pair of scissors would have been handy.
Having said all that, these were minor inconveniences and did not affect our stay on a fantastic island holiday destination, in a local setting, at a competitive price.
Thank you Simon and Francine you we're always on hand to assist in anything that needed fixing and made us welcome throughout our stay.
We love St Lucia xx
We stayed for one week in the 2 bedroom apartment in March 2016, as a family of 5 (two adults, 3 children). The apartment is in an excellent location, very convenient to Rodney Bay. We were within minutes of the 3 grocery stores, the Marina (from which we embarked on a day cruise), Trims horseback riding (another fun excursion), Pigeon National Park, several different beaches, and many restaurants as well. We did rent a car, which I would highly recommend.
The apartment itself: we enjoyed the swimming pool and hot tub nearly every night, and everyone slept comfortably in their own bed (each child in his/her own single bed, and my wife and I in the full bed). The bedrooms were comfortable and cool. The kitchen, though a bit small, provided a stove, oven, microwave, refrigerator/freezer, and a blender for making frozens. So we were able to cook breakfast and dinner each day, saving hundreds vs. eating out for a family of five. There is also a washer so you can clean your clothes if necessary. The garden/yard out back is beautiful and spacious and our children enjoyed chasing the crabs out there.
The best part of Blue Skies Apts, however, is Simon and Francine. Simon greeted us upon arrival and showed us around the apartment and ensured we had everything we needed. The next morning, Francine arrived and loaded us all up her car and took us on a tour of the area. She showed us everything we asked for - the beaches, food markets, parks, attractions, restaurant tips (try Razmataz Indian, as she recommended - we loved it) and answered many other questions we had - this turned out to be extremely helpful and saved us a lot of time from guessing/getting lost trying to find these on our own. Francine was also available immediately if we needed to call her with any other questions or needs we had. Simon and Francine are truly remarkable people who went out of their way to ensure we had the best experience possible while at Blue Skies, and we hope to stay in touch with them in the future.
