Positives: Nicely designed rooms, great to have a little 'bungalow' all to yourself. The beach bar was a definite highlight - great location, funky vibe, good cocktails and is clearly a sunset destination for people staying elsewhere.
Negatives: Staff at the hotel were by far the worst we had encountered anywhere on the island (and we stayed at 10 different hotels during our 3 week tour around the island). They were disinterested, not particularly welcoming, had no concept of "service" and should not be working in the hospitality industry! (I understand that the guy who usually works on reception was not there during our stay - but this is no excuse for the shoddy service we received by any stand-ins). I won't bother to detail the many MANY incidents during which this was evidenced, but suffice to say it felt like we were in a place being managed by people who have zero clue how a guest-house should work!
Our room was not cleaned during our stay (apparently they only had one key for our room - the one we were given - which does not say much for organisation/management). The towels we were given smelled terrible. Other small points are: the ceiling fan was not sufficient to cool the room in any meaningful way (not least when there were frequent, extended power outages!!) - and you should be aware that the rooms are a 5 minute walk away from the beach down a little sandy road (we did not realise this when we booked, the info given led us to believe the guest house was directly on the beach).
We did not enjoy our stay as much as we had hoped, and decided to check out a few days early and go somewhere else! (And, by the way, at our next destination we got a huge air-conditioned room with fully working bathroom and excellent service, swimming pool, & amenities for the same price as Kae Funk!)
We stayed in kaefunk hotel for a week during our stay in zanzibar. Its located in michamvi. We stayed in a cottage like room, twas so simple, nice and cozy. The hotel is located right at the Beach so we had access to it whenever we want. The staff were really very nice and friendly. Every night we'd go to kaefunk beach bar to watch the sunset. Tourist would come from different places just to watch the sunset coz its really beautiful from this place. Overall, twas nice staying at this place.
I stayed at Kae Funk for 8 nights. Initially the plan was to stay for two nights – however this place was too good to leave after two days.
Accomendation: The lodges have ocean view and were placed, thus you have privacy. Basically, you can greet the morning naked from the small entrance area to the lodge, if you prefer this. House keeeping kept the room nice and clean.
Area: The atmosphere was just amazing – this was the perfect place for chillout. Kae Funk has an authentic atmosphere for relaxing in hammocks, good laughs in the bar and workouts if your are up for that during vacations. The area has a jungle vibe and is perfect for chill and games in the shadow in the middle of the day. It is 2 minutes walk from the beach with a lively bar, where people arive in the afternoon to catch the sunset (since Kae Funk is placed in the bay, this is the place to go for sunsets, when you’re on the east site of the island).
Food: You can eat at the few places in the area. The place is close the Rock Restaurant. However, I cancelled our booking, since the food (especially the calamari) was amazing at this place – so tasty.
Staff / service: This was the main reason for me to the prolong the stay. The staff at Kae Funk was velcoming, caring – like a family, who wants you to get the best out of the stay. They took care of everything, breakfast, mosquito protection, trips and transport. These people were amazing. I felt welcome, relaxed, safe – and simply more like a friend than a guest /customer.
I definitely want to get back to this place.
Kae Funk Zanzibar is a truly unique place in every way. I stayed there for 8 nights with a friend and we loved every minute. The lodges all have an amazing ocean view, a big and comfortable double bed, clean towels and a small private terrace. However we didn't spend any time at the room as the place have a very cozy area near the reception/bar with hammocks, music and games to play. Not to forget the nice jungle gym :)
The beach is only a 1 minute walk away where there is a nice beachbar were you can see the beautiful sunset from every night. There is a lot of local people in Michamvi and not that many tourists which makes it a place that you don't wanna leave.
The absolute best thing about Kan Funk Zanzibar is the people who are working there. Everyone from the owner to the manager, the receptionists, the drivers, the chefs, the bartenders and not to forget the Masais who make sure that you are safe all day and night (not that there are anything to be afraid of. The area is very safe and everyone is very welcoming and helpful.)
We became a part of the "family" and had an absolutely wonderful stay filled with laughs, joy and good memories. Henry, David, Happy, Max, Ismail, Matteo, André, Eddy, Lazaro and everyone else - you all made us high on life. We love you all and will see you soon again! :D
We booked this place without doing much research...Big mistake! We spent 5 nights there but after the first night, we already wanted to leave. We stayed because we managed to be away from this "Hotel" all day. Management and some staff members (The 2 Maasai and one of the waiter were nice) didn't give a damn about their customers. The Manager seemed on vacation with his girlfriend, hanging out at the bar and doing nothing. He never interacted with us even if he was there and we could see him (i.e. Breakfast was supposed to be served from 7:30 am and at 8:15 am, it was still being set up by the Waiter and the Manager was just laying down with his Girlfriend on a hammock while all customers were sitting and waiting for breakfast to be ready). In general, staff and management were just not welcoming and pleasant to deal with (Little advice - Smiling doesn't cost money).
As for the room, you had to expect some insect/animal friends to enter as there was a gap between the door and the wall.
On a positive side, the sunset on the beach was amazing but you can always grab a cab from a more pleasant hotel to see it.
Overall, we do not recommend this place mostly for the poor service and the quality of the place.
