Went this weekend with my family for a bit of an escape. My dad has recently become disabled after a severe stroke, so we were nervous to take him away, but the team at Penvale were fantastic and reassured me the lodge would be ok for him to get around. The Birches Lodge has a fab ground floor en-suite with plenty of room for a toilet frame to go around and a bath for his shower board. I rang ahead and explained the situation and they allowed us to arrive a little early to set up all the equipment in the lodge before other family members arrived, so he was all settled when my brother and his family arrived. The site of the lodges is breathtaking with lakes and nature all around and just 2 mins from the Abbey and 5 mins from Llangollen. The pool had covid safe timed slots so we still got to enjoy the full facilities but will added reassurance. The team are friendly and kind but also very thorough and professional. Thank you to the full team for allowing us a little bit of paradise after a traumatic year. We will be back and will continue to recommend your fab village !
What a great week we have just had as a family. We stayed in the Saltspring vip (pet) lodge No.12. The lodge was exceptional, the feeling you got as soon as you walked in was immense.
On arrival we were greeted by the reception staff who were lovely and gave us all the information we needed and information about walks and how to get to places.
The lodge was lovely and warm as soon as we went in. Everything you need is there. There is a washer/dryer in the utility area with ironing board and iron. They also provided a rechargeable flashlight. There is a dishwasher with tablets. A fridge and separate freezer. There was dish soap, tea towels, cloths and bin bags.
There is plenty of cooking equipment and there was also salt and pepper!
Our first logs and kindling were free but we took more with us. There is also a bbq but make sure to take coal with you.
The rooms were lovely and the beds were great. There is also plenty of storage including the big built in wardrobes.
Towels and hand towels were also provided along with soap, wash gel, shampoo and conditioner.
The hot tub was fantastic it was always hot and got inspected and treated everyday.
The lady that came around every morning to attend to the hot tub was lovely. We had plenty of chats (mainly about our dogs and her dog Rocco).
The on-site swimming pool was brilliant it was lovely and warm and was sheltered in case it rained.
The site itself it’s lovely as well with big fishing ponds. There is also a small children’s play area and plenty of grass.
We went on a lovely walk to Llangollen town with our 2 dogs with takes roughly 50-60mins. However it is only a 5 minute drive but we preferred the walk.
On a clear night the sky is amazing to look at in the hot tub as there is no light pollution.
Overall it was an amazing break away, we stayed mon-fri (5 adults and 2 dogs). There was loads of room in the lodge so it didn’t feel cramped.
We will definitely be returning again.
Thank you to all the staff for looking after us.
We stayed in a Birches lodge vip,it was lovely, spacious well equipped and clean throughout.Beds were comfy.Ours was no 2 it had no log-burner but the heating was more than adequate.Lovely outdoor space with veranda and huge hot tub,you are quite close to the next lodge but that didn't bother us.We had a lovely view over the lakes.
Utiity room has an extra wc and another fridge and the washer dryer was great for washing the towels/tea towels. We were left some dishwasher tablets and washing up liquid and a cloth,we bought handwash and would recommend getting cleaning spray to wipe down. The bins are by reception its best to do the bins everyday unlike us at the end of the holiday,we had loads to carry.
We had a tesco shop delivered to the lodge no problems.Plenty of room for parking,4 cars outside ours.
Llangollen is only a short drive,we booked a taxi into town for a meal at the dee bistro great food and then visited the three eagles for cocktails
It was a perfect break and we all loved it so much we've booked again for the same time next year.
We stayed for a long weekend, Fri - Mon in lodge no. 3. It slept 8 with three double bedrooms (two of them ensuite) & a bunk bed room. We had three cars between us all, & there was plenty room enough to all park right outside.
The lodge was plenty big enough, with a large open plan living room, dining area & well equiped kitchen, a large decked area & hot tub. The dining table seats 8 comfortably, but with easily enough space for 10 (if there were ten dining chairs instead of 8), & the 3 sofas easily seat 8.
Some lodges had log burners, ours didn't, but we didn't need one as the heating / cooling system was plenty sufficient to regulate the temperature.
We had great weather, & as such, made much use of the outside area, hot tub, & BBQ provided. Just remember to take some charcoal & matches / a ligher to make use of the BBQ, because as you would expect, they're not provided with the lodge. BBQ utensils are though, as are everything you would expect in a modern self-catering kitchen.
Llangollen close by, is a lovely little town, where you can get any essentials that you might have forgotten (see above) & there are plenty of pubs, eateries & takeaways if you wish.
Horshoe Pass in a must in your car or preferably on your road bike (if you remembered it)!
Our lodge was very spacious & clean & set amongst a lovely forest & lake setting, which was extremely tranquil. Lots of lovely places to waln & sit, whilst watching nature pass by. There's literally no light pollution whatsoever (as you are literally in the middle of nowhere), so you can see all of the stars on anything near a clear night sky.
The staff on reception were very accommodating, extremely helpful, nothing was too much trouble, they gave us extra bin bags & cleaning equipment for the BBQ after it's use, & the young lady was very routine & thorough in ensuring the hot tubs were all clesn & ready to be used again early each morning.
There's a really handy welcome book / manual for literally everything in the lodge should anything go wrong or you need to know how to operate something (like the hi-tech oven).
All in all, a wonderful lodge in a fabulous setting, well worth the money, thank you.
We stayed here for a week in July in one of the VIP lodges. Everything was perfect, as mentioned in a previous review the only thing we could have needed was a mirror in the main bedroom. The place was very clean and well equipped. Easily accessible to all of the activities in North Wales. In the summer months it would be nice to have the pool open longer, by the time we got back from our days out it was closing.
