Gran Via is dotted with these soulless three and four star hotels that offer convenient accommodation in the heart of the city but remain impersonal and unmemorable. They all have friendly staff at reception who speak good English, they all have small and clean rooms that would benefit from a renovation etc etc.
The Senator doesn’t really differ in any respect. I liked the view from my room on the 11th floor, but otherwise the room was not memorable and it’s hard to see where the hotel got its fourth star from as the room was a typical three-star city hotel room. The bed was comfortable, though, and I appreciated the safe as well as the two 0.5 L water bottles in the small fridge. However, air conditioning didn’t work, so the room remained too warm. Wifi was free of charge, fast and efficient.
I asked for a room with a bathtub and got one. There was also a handheld shower, and water pressure was good, though the temperature seemed to vary on its own.
The hotel is a few steps from Plaza de España metro station, with easy access to the airport.
Ordinarily, I would give such a hotel the ”Average” rating, but as prices were very low in September 2020 and I paid only 53 EUR a night, breakfast excluded (available at the hotel for 10 EUR), I consider this exceptionally good value and thus worth a ”Very good” rating.
Usually visit this hotel for business and usually everything is great although this time the room i was given was tiny not like the others and the main problen was the AC. It was 40 degrees all night in the room impossible to sleep.
The room was the highlight decorated in an elegant old world style with frllly curtains and white bedspread. It was also tidy with good lighting. In general the elegance of the room was a contrast to the rather plain more "senatorial" decor of the lobby. The food in the cafe was good and the service friendly. A great place to land in Madrid. The hotel is in the center near the landmark sights and metro.
Fabulous welcome. Receptionist Ana was charming and helpful for the whole stay.
Paid for a room upgrade onto the 10th floor (1002) but sadly as the baristade was so high couldnt see over it unless you put a chair up and then lent on the top (NOT Recommended)
Room was great. Bed perfect and housekeeper Johanna was excellent !! Thank you.
Breakfast on floor 1 was great. Sadly same menu each day but that is expected in Europe. Asked on the first morning how to get to breakfast and told 'via the lift only'.. on the last day (as there were Q virtually every morning to get a lift!!) staff told me 'there is a staircase behind the fire door! - should have told us on first day !!
Location - Absolutey brillant for shopping and metro. Perfect
TRIED to use the spa maybe 3 times, BUT as elevator number 2 is the only one which will go there, NEVER did lift 2 pick me up so never managed ot use the spa ..
Elevators : old and my goodness some days buttons didnt work and didnt pick you up but heh never mind its an old hotel.
TV: very limited channels in English and could never get a connection between mobile phone and TV as advertised. Gave up and used laptop. No problem.
NOW The Last Minute:
I organised a car via reception to take me to Madrid airport on the last day @ 30 EURO fixed far. OK great... easy and fixed price... Oh how so wrong!!
We got picked up, and the driver parked around the corner on a side street. OK no problem - drove to the airport and he was nice and chatty.
Arrived: OK i gave him my credit card (already confirmed by the hotel that they will take credit card) ... it didnt pass. Declined! Now, this card has been used every day for the past 2 years with no problem... i even used to pay the hotel bill upon check out!... Tried twice didnt work.. OK no problem i can pay CASH. OK i gave him EURO 50 and he said "NO change"... So what to do ? no change, credit card machine not working etc.. i asked where to get money changed and he said no where !! So as i was checking in for a flight he gave me NO option but to give him EURO 50. I told him then change the receipt. He changed it !!
Total rip off and once inside the airport i phoned VISA back in Bangkok and they confirmed that NO payment request had been made by an EDC in Madrid at that time. So his machine had failed NOT my credit card.
As i joined FITUR i have made an official complaint to their offices and also to the police at Madrid Airport. Guess nothing will happen but anyway it was done. I will NOT be ripped off like this...
I would be interested to recieve a response from the hotel as this was the recommended transport company from the hotel. The hotel has my email..
Sadly the hotel gets 5* from me, but the transport company offered to guests by the hotel gets 1*- therefore my rating drops.....
Liked - perfect location - proximity to Madrid's land marks - proximity of the metro - proximity of the taxi stand
Disliked - small, noisy room - very poor breakfast (except for tomatoes no vegetables, no fresh juices) - old TV - slow internet - no slippers and bath robes - poor toiletries - prostitutes around the hotel 24h a day - no restaurant - no bar - not attractive reception area - no doorman - definitely not a 4star quality
