This is a modern, refined, comfortable and appealing boutique hotel that was an enjoyable place to stay and deserves many of the plaudits lavished upon it by other TA contributors. However, our experience revealed some shortcomings that tainted the excellence that those rhapsodic accolades had led us to expect.
The good: in a town with plenty of eye-catching competition, this hotel is a delight to behold; a favourable first impression that was abetted by proficient and obliging reception and service staff. Our one-bedroom panorama suite (215) was extravagantly spacious, clean, quiet, comfortable, stylishly finished & furnished and well-appointed. Almost everything expected was there and it mostly worked as expected. Both the bedroom and the spacious living room open onto an equally expansive, flower-bedecked balcony with a peerless view (weather permitting) up to the Matterhorn. The king bed was comfortable, the linens plush and there were enough pillows for each of us to find a favourite. Closet & storage space abound throughout the suite. The bathroom & separate toilet are roomy, tasteful and as well-equipped and functional as a Swiss Army knife. The kitchen would be adequate anything short of a feast although the absence of a microwave oven seemed odd given that there is a fair size convection oven that appeared never to have been used. The included Wifi worked well on all our devices. A breakfast buffet is included in the tariff. The hotel will provide transport from and to Zermatt Station if requested.
The not so good: there is no air-conditioning in the hotel, which might be fine for the majority of the year when heating is the primary requirement but it’s somewhat less so in balmier conditions. So, if the suite gets too warm for comfort, opening the balcony doors is the only means of temperature control – day and night. On arrival we discovered that both bedside lamps and one reading light in the suite were not working which we reported immediately. Undertakings were made but they were still not working when we departed a couple days later. The hotel’s website waxes lyrical about their breakfast buffet and egg accompaniments and the outcome is OK., but falls short of excellence – especially if you arrive later when the buffet is very slow to be replenished.
