This was different. Rather like sleeping over in a luxury prison cell. Despite tiny room the venue was clean and car parking secure. Economically priced and close to the motorway. Good breakfast and The Ibis hotel restaurant is next door if you need an evening meal.
We stayed for just one night with our dog. We arrived late in the evening and got our key through a machine outside next to the reception. The rooms and parking lot are closed off with a gate. The room was simple and very small, just like the bathroom. Everything was clean and we had every, basic comfort we needed for just one night.
Traveling from Dover it was time for me to find a place to stay around 7pm, I stopped at a service station to eat and look for a place to stay a bit further along the motorway towards Bordeaux on the Internet, I booked this place and arrived an hour later. The girl on reception spoke English, I booked a twin for 50€ with taxes included, on arrival she asked do I want to stay in the twin room or have a room with a double bed, I replied "a double", that will be 57€...couldn't be bothered arguing! The hotel is 2 mins off motorway and local restaurants (there are 3) offer a discount to hotel guests. The nearest one, 200 yards away, give 15% off, Le or La Patertite, you can't go in there and just drink, you have to eat something. I ate at Services and it wasn't great. Eat near the hotel, the staff in there are great, they speak English and provide a uk menu cheaper than Services and better quality, kids menu, good starters, mains, wine, coffee and deserts.
The positive points were: - very nice receptionist, nice fresh coffee for one euro per cup, concept of having the rooms in different buildings, mattress was much better than the general quality of the hotel. This being said, the room was very old and tired, nowhere to put one's stuff at all (and we had very little, as it was a stop over), the bathroom very rudimentary, the room and bedding stank of stale smoke. The price at almost EUR 50 was far too much and all other options are better, including sleepinmg in your car!
If not at the cutting edge of Motels, the Balladin at Saintes has many redeeming features. Very comfortable room, bed and bathroom, The conveniently located building is not the quietest due to its cabin like construction method. The staff are extremely helpful, and the breakfast more than adequate. The price makes it very good value. Overall it's provides a very satisfactory place for an overnight stay.
