First the good things:
Nicely appointed shared spaces, friendly gathering spot in a large kitchen, nice host and respectful and interesting fellow guests. Good location, though you have to scamper through a fairly high traffic corner each time you arrive and depart.
From a walkers perspective, this hostel was lacking. It had no drying room and not even a stack of newspapers to stuff boots with.
The host offered to put our things in a dryer ' for five minutes' but this left our gear wet though no longer dripping. Walkers are not permitted to place boots in vicinity of the aga stove.
In addition to beds, our room had 4 peg hooks and one hardback chair. No place to unpack except the floor.
The heat is supplied via a ceiling vent so not even a radiator available to dry boots and socks in the room.
The mattresses are in need of replacing.
There was an obstacle course of stairs to navigate for overnight visits to the bathroom.
The atmosphere is great, but from a practical perspective we found this really lacking. It was my least favorite accommodation in a mix of hostels and BnBs we visited on the Kerry Way.
Always wanted to stay here and got my chance recently when walking The Beara Way. It certainly lived up to its reputation and its name! We got a great welcome from Maureen and some tips on where to catch live music in Kenmare. We had a double ensuite room which was ideal. Light breakfast (porridge), tea/coffee and snacks were provided. There is a lovely sitting room for reading and chilling out.
I had more fun at this hostel than I've had at fancy hotels I've stayed in across Ireland. The building is historic and has a beautiful old vibe to it. It is probably the best situated lodging in the town--right on the corner of the two major streets. We had a room on the 3rd floor with a beautiful view over town with the hills and chapel in the background. There is a big kitchen open to use with toast, jam, biscuits and tea. Just by comparison, I stayed in a hotel in Waterford for 3x the price this weekend and they didn't even let you have a cup of tea and they put us in a basement! This hostel is a gem, really. We booked a private room and it comes with a sink and a double bed--so basically the discounted price that makes this a "hostel" rather than a hotel is because of the shared bathroom, which is fine. The showers were pitiful, however, only going for about 10 seconds at a time. Also, they do not provide towels or soap, so we had to go buy soap at a shop in town. I would stay there again in any case, a great value. I was most pleased just to enjoy the old house with a cup of tea.
Last minute change of plans took us to Kenmare.
Late in the afternoon, we tried this place which turned out to be great.
One of the best hostels I've ever stayed in !!!
I highly recommend KENMARE FAILTE HOSTEL !!!
We just spent a night in Kenmare and chose Kenmare Failte Hostel to stay. It is a quiet, familiar, nice and clean place and we also were very welcomed. Comfortable beds, large bedroom, and the shared bathrooms are large and clean. We loved and recommend it for everyone.
