Went to Penang for foodie holiday - Penang was ok.
We booked a King suite for eight nights through QANTAS for a “Great Price”.
We were upgraded” to 2BR studio - which included a bedroom with King Bed.
There was a shower/WC with threadbare towels and no towel rails and needed a good clean.
The main room had an extra king bed, minimal kitchen (fridge, crockery/cutlery for four, and five cooking utensils) washer/dryer, TV (no english). WiFi barely worked and dropped out. We used our own mainly. The room was noisy - could hear people walking down corridor and banging around next door.
There was no hot water over the kitchen sink or bathroom basin.
An outdoor swimming pool was on fifth floor. Cleaned once a week apparently. I doubt that, with silt and debris on the floor when we arrived and when we left.
The building had good restaurants and supermarket. The building had security, but the rooms are NOT as depicted on website.
It’s not a place to be able to sit and relax/chill after a long day sightseeing. There are MUCH better options. If it sounds too good to be true it generally is.
We met Omera a very hospitable host to show us around these serviced apartments. Conveniently located near to Gurney, George Town and the coastal area of Batu Ferringhi. They offer a wide range of suites at exceedingly competitive rates when staying over 30 nights. Within the building is a very handy supermarket and local convince stores too. The suites are well planned and have all the facilities one would require. The swimming pool commands excellent views too.
The 3-bedroom apartment was excellent with washer & dryer (which is very handy if you plan to stay long). They even provide the detergent. Kitchen is meant to cook simple dishes only. Very convenient to have Cold Storage on the lower ground, but no other shops are open at the Island Plaza. Just Coffee Bean, Guardian, Japanese Restaurant etc. Not many people use the swimming pool, so it was a plus point for us. Just a short drive away to Gurney area, so not difficult to get tasty food.
I must thank Omera for arranging my rooms to be on the same level even when I did not request it due to last minute booking. It meant a lot to us! :)
In short and if you don't have time to read a big long review this is an excellent place to stay in Penang.
Having been to Penang many times we decided to locate ourselves as centrally as we could and Tanjong Tokong certainly fits that bill. From Internet searches Luxfort 118 ticked all the boxes that we required. Our initial communications were all answered promptly and the staff were very helpful. So we were set.
Due to a rushed connection in KL our baggage failed to arrive at Penang airport and the help provided by staff member Jason when we arrived at check in was exceptional. Not only did he contact the airline on our behalf to ensure they knew the delivery location he also lent us a phone so the airline could contact us for delivery.
Our initial impression of the apartment itself was that it was everything we expected, clean and well appointed. I would acknowledge those short comings that have been pointed out in other reviews primarily the lack of external Windows (only in the bedroom) and the kinda strange layout of furniture that is constrained by building design but we weren't there to live in the apartment, rather to visit it for sleeping purposes. It is a shame that the designer didn't include balconies but the reasonable price would escalate if they had.
Besides if you want great views all you need to do is put your swimmers on and head to the pool! Sitting in the spa overlooking the Straits is a pretty good way to chill for an hour or so! Clean, well maintained, large, shaded; you could not ask for much more from a pool.
By far and away the Luxfort 's greatest asset is location. Perched atop the Island Plaza shopping centre with a couple of good coffee shops and a supermarket, some excellent food courts within a couple of minutes work and western restaurants just next door (if that's your thing) all your food needs are right there. I would recommend the Old World food market which is in the centre of complex directly across the road for lunch - the Char Kway Teow is as good as anywhere on the island and for dinner head to the Goodall food market which is on the same side of Tanjong Rd as Island Plaza and one block toward Batu Feringi. The Thai stall here is a stand out but it is all good (even the Claypot Frog!)
It is also reasonably handy to all the big tourist attractions of Penang and retiring back to the Luxfort each night was ideal. The beds were comfy, the showers excellent and having your own mini kitchen comes in handy for breakfasts on those days that you couldn't be bothered venturing out. A washer and dryer also adds the bonus of being able to pack less if you wish. The Astro TV service allowed us to keep up with the world and catch the odd movie and the in room wifi was fast and reliable. There really aren't any valid criticisms!
I would go back in a heartbeat and in fact I wish I was there now.
We stayed here for 5 nights and were very happy with everything. It was the best self catering facilities we have had during our 5 weeks in Malaysia. There were 2 electric rings with a large pan and a frying pan. There was also a microwave, kettle and toaster. There was also a large fridge/freezer. Cleaning cloths and liquid were also provided together with washing powder for the washing machine - there was a tumble dryer too. There was also an iron and ironing board. Free wi- fi was very good.
The bus into George Town (101) (about 39mins) one way and the National Park (30 mins)and beaches (15 mins) the other way stopped right outside although the road was quite difficult to cross. We bought a weekly pass for RM30 (£5) each from the ferry bus terminal (take your passport for this) which saved us having to have the right change each time - no change is given on the busses.
Although there is a large Tesco store within sight of the complex we didn't visit as there is a Cold Storage supermarket in the complex which seems to have a lot of products from Waitrose and a lot of Western type foods including wine, beer and pork products.
There is a pool and jacuzzi on the 5th floor which is undercover but opens out into tho open air. The water was quite cold but refreshing as it was so hot. There were only 4 loungers but as there so few people using it it didn't matter, we always got one.
The beds were comfortable and sheets of good quality as were the towels. There is only cleaning once a week and, we assume, lined is only changed once a week too. This didn't bother us but does for some people as there are not brushes and mops to clean with.
The only negative points really were the lack of natural light and random placement of furniture and no safe. There was only one window and that was in the bedroom and was quite high so if you sat in a chair facing it you couldn't really see out. The sofa was placed so it faced the fridge/freezer and a small occasional table was placed in a free space. A long unit with cupboards was placed against another wall.
Overall we were very happy there, the air con was effective and had 2 units that were controlled separately for the living and sleeping areas.
We would certainly recommend this property and would stay here again if we were ever to return to Penang.
