Visited as a group, given a spacious room that could accommodate all of us, at a very reasonable rate. Had serval Sri Lankan breakfasts here which were huge and superb as well as an evening meal of prawns, squid, and fish; again reasonable and delicious! Sathesh the owner was a great guy very willing to help and give advise. Plus had a great sense of humour even playing a practical joke on us which was brilliant. His easy going attitude giving the hostel a relaxed atmosphere. Would recommend as well as stay again. Although, we got our washing done but when it was given back it was slightly damp and not particularly clean. Overall fantastic but maybe do your washing elsewhere.

We stayed for a few nights and got a good price for an AC room. The room itself is rather small and basic, but our double room had a very comfy mattress. The guesthouse is only a 5min walk to Passikudah or Kalkudah beach which is great. We usually had breaky and dinner there because they do great food for reasonable prices. Agree on a time for food to be served or else you might have to wait for an hour though. The staff is very welcoming!

We don't have too high standards, but this place is just terrible. Consider other options nearby.
The good: The owner, Satesh, is actually very nice and the dinners are not expensive, however this places doesn't worth even paying 1000 rupee. I also think it was a mistake that he added in the bill an extra 500 rupee more than agreed at first, as he changed it after we noticed.

The bad: We got a room with draining from the ceiling that continued all night long. Certain times it was flowing. We had to go and ask for towels to absorb the water on the floor, where we couldn't put our bags.
It was actually funny, during the night - a few nice mushrooms grew from this water and some mold. It was caused from the sudden rain and some excuses about monkeys doing things.
It might happen, true, but the way it was dealt was bad. We had a similar problem in Polonnaruwa, where we got another room and a lowered price that we didn't even ask for.

The worst: My girlfriend didn't agree to take a shower (you might disagree as well!), because of a stinky smell of fish and seaweed. You can see the algae coming out of the shower head. Of course there's no toilet paper or towels, but it might be acceptable in Sri Lanka.

Another bad: on TripAdvisor and LonelyPlanet people hail the food in the place. I respect them having that opinion but don't respect their taste buds! Very average food. The only pro is the cheap sea food.
If you like to eat tasty food, lower your expectations! They barely use local spices, to make it for the western taste they think westerners like. The big a perfect king prawns had no extra taste enhancers (such as... salt, pepper, lemon).
Our mild and watery pineapple juice (though cheap) was cut with the same knife for the onion, tastes like pineapple-onion juice. Yummi?

Another worse: It is said to have internet in the place, but it didn't work when we arrived, and seems nothing was done to fix the problem (just written in other reviews here). However, the owner found a solution, sending us to use the internet at the hotel nearby.

Overall, this was the worst place we encountered in Sri Lanka, and made us leave Passikudah.

Your visit to that place, which some people call guesthouse, is at your own risk...

Sadly, we we're recommended this place for the food and not only was the food bad, but the place itself was filthy. We were appalled by the level of cleanliness and were not surprised that it is run entirely by a group of men that use it as their local alcohol den. The room had black mold and the bathroom still had empty crisp packets in it. Didn't even ask for a towel because we couldn't trust how clean they would be. Despite our misgivings we stayed for dinner but were greeted by overcooked and ridiculously overpriced tuna, rubbery calamari and rice. We had to beg for some garlic/chilli sauce to help the whole thing go down. Trust us, stay at Inn on the Bay instead, just nearby and infinitely nicer and less expensive too! Tell Ashok hi and ask him to make you some garlic prawns, the best we had on our 3.5 week trip!
