We stayed here as a staging point on the return trip to Madrid from touring Spain and Portugal. I'm not sure of other reasons to stay in Ribera del Fresno which didn't particularly impress but nonetheless this is a wonderful villa in an otherwise fairly ordinary street. The rooms are very nicely decorated and the bathrooms have been updated / modernized. The English speaking host was away in Madrid but made sure by phone that we were welcomed and set up. We also had to deal with a few issues such as a leaking toilet and a very smokey room which was almost intolerable for our kids. But all our problems seemed to fade after relaxing under the orange trees with a glass of local plonk in the wonderful courtyard. There is a pool here but it was full of leaves and not very inviting. A simple breakfast is included, the wifi worked in some parts of the house (slowly). Beds were hard (as usual in Spain) but otherwise all was very comfortable.
This place is amazing! Its an old renovated farmhouse in the middle of the town that just takes your breath away from the heavy old Spanish front door to the beautiful, aromatic, courtyard and the gardens beyond.
We were given a tour of the house when we first arrived and all the rooms are finished to a very high standard. The bathrooms have been given a complete overhaul and the fittings are new and work perfectly.
We had the room with the sunken bath and while it was a beautiful feature it didn't have very good heating properties as the water was cold almost once it hit the old stone. That said it was a lovely touch in the open style bathroom.
Breakfast was simple and sufficient and we were able to eat in the outdoor courtyard with the amazing aromas from the lemon and orange trees.
This place is out of the way, in an up and coming Ribera region, so well worth a visit if you are planning a trip around rural Spain. The cheese and wine on arrival was a lovely touch and made us feel welcome straight away.
Finca Villa Juan is a rural house that has been recently restored (2014) and converted into a charming and peaceful rural accommodation in Ribera del Fresno, a town of 3,000 inhabitants in Badajoz.
To the tranquility of the village you have to add that behind the high walls of the house time seems to have stopped, because is decorated with antique furniture and very modern touches in the six rooms including bathrooms with transparent glass doors and tubs in some room in Roman termal style
There are several lounges for reading, a library, a television room, a wine celler, Internet connection with free wifi, and facilities to allow business meetings for smail groups.
Special mention are the 3 patios that has the house, one with orange and lemon fruit trees, and another with the pool, perfect to appease the rigors of summer in Extremadura.
Within a radius of 30 kilometers you can do many activities such as hiking through Sierra de Hornachos, visit Zafra, the "little Sevilla", and Almendralejo, Extremadura birthplace of cava in this region.
"Iberico" cuisine with ham and all products related to pigs, and extraordinary cheeses like Torta del Casar complete a unique experience in southern Extremadura
I visited Finca Villa Juan with friends for a weekend. It's a beautiful house in Toscana style where every room is individually designed. The comfortable size of the house, the nice garden with orange and lemon trees and the peace gave us immediately a feel good feeling. On our arrival we got spoiled with delicious self-made Paella and wine from the region. We really enjoyed the booked activites and are looking forward to return soon!
