This was such a disappointment! I had booked the property as advertised with the pool, fitness center and good wifi on booking.com and when the driver picked me up he took me to their sister property Shangri-la Nyoni Gardens which had none of those things. They had me pay right at check in which I shouldn't have done and because the names were similar (shangri-la gardens) I didn't notice until I started asking where is the pool etc? After a lot of complaining they told me the other hotel that I actually booked was full but they could drive me the 10-15 minutes over if I arranged in advance to use the pool/fitness center, really not ideal as I had limited time on my trip. They would not give me a refund despite asking right after I paid and realized they had switched me. Absolutely hate this kind of thing, would never book again! Also their wifi did not work well, totally useless for a business trip, and the balcony on the room had padlocks which no one could find the keys for so I was trapped inside.
As an overseas consultant and frequent visitor to East Africa, I was delighted to discover this hotel. The rooms are spacious, clean and comfortable with fast Internet connection from room and poolside. Rooms have been tastefully refurbished and are spotless. All the mod cons you would expect from an up market hotel but half the price, TV, minibar, hair dryer and complementary laundry service! Hot and powerful shower, access to pool, gym, salon and tennis lessons (!) from the Kampala Club to which it is adjoined. Central and safe location - opposite the Sheraton. Staff are pleasant and professional. The hotel is small enough that it has a nice personal feel about it. Rooms have AC (though I didn't use mine). Better still, they have mosquito nets on all the windows so you can have the lights on and windows wide open if you prefer fresh air. Breakfast - cakes, fruits, eggs, toast, porridge ect is served in the pretty garden at the back. Full marks! Best value for money in Kampala.
Stayed 22 nights in the hotel while doing some work for the UN.
Nice and central just across from the Sheraton. Nice walk down through the gardens to the Speke Hotel and pizza restaurant (and others). The gates to the gardens close at 6pm.
The hotel is in an enclosed compound - with the Kampala Club and also the Shanghai Restaurant and bar. I ate at the Shanghai on 6 occasions and had a great meal each time.
You also get use of the Kampala Club facilities - gym, swimming pool, tennis court, badminton and pool.
There may have been more - but I was there to work!!
The hotel has a website - (--)
The photos are acurate of the current establishment.
Breakfast was available on the lawn (or could be had in the room if you wished). Good selection.
Internet was included in the price, as was the laundry and shoe cleaning service.
This is certainly an establishment that I would recommend - staff friendly and helpful.
I stayed at the Shangri-La for nine days in August 2006. I had a spacious, quiet and spotless clean room with 24/7 broadband internet access (included in the rate).
Staff is very friendly, reliable and efficient. Mastercard, Visa and TC are accepted (with a surcharge of 5%, which is common in the country).
Laundry is free of charge. Breakfast is not sumptuous but good (eggs, beans, flakes, toast, some fruits and juices) and served in the lovely and quiet garden. You also get the local newspapers (which are worth reading, esp. the outspoken Daily Monitor).
The hotel is safe and very well located in the heart of Kampala, next to the Sheraton (with an excellent and affordable restaurant). Several other restaurants and bars are in walking distance. And it is very safe indeed to walk around, even at night.
The Shangri-La is adjacent to the Kampala Club. As a hotel guest you can use its facilities (Tennis courts, Swimming Pool, Gym). The gym is 2000 Shillings per day (1800 = 1 USD), the pool is free (too much chlorine, though).
Transport to/from the airport can be organised by the staff. The rate is 30 USD.
Due to the fairly frequent power shortages in Kampala there wasn't enough hot water at times or just a trickle. Otherwise I would have given 5 points. The hotel has a generator (which is good for the internet access during the power shortages).
All in all: Very good value. Highly recommendable.
