This was my first time for traveling like backpacker so this is the first hostel I stayed too.
This hostel is located between the town centre and Nimmarnhemin rd. and next to Kad suan kaew so it isn't too quiet and not too busy either.
For this stay, I didn't expect anything from this place but they quite surprised me by the cleanness, friendly owner and the little gift for Christmas.
For 350 baht a night in the high season for clean private tiny bedroom, clean sharing shower room and toilet and good service. I think it's a reasonable price and not hesitate to recommend this place to my friends.
This place might have changed its name a few times and might be known as SS Hostel or SS Guesthouse, on booking.com my reservation was on the last one. But don't let that scare you away because this is a good place to stay and owner Kot is very committed to her guesthouse!
Going here would seem to be an easy task, you most certainly have googlemaped it, but somehow the locals refuse to find it. It seems to be more standard then occasional that the guests have to phone Kot to have her explaining the exact location.
But when that done this is really a good starting point for your stay in Chiang Mai. It is a fairly small town and everything within the boundaries of the old town is within in walking distance and so is one of the bar streets, situated on the old town "island". Next door is a mall with a great selection of restaurants if you don't want to go for street food. There is also a great motorbike rental, Buddy's, on the opposite side of the mall.
On the same property there is a restaurant, owned by a friend or relative I think, that is good. Sadly it seems to not attract that many guests, at least not durring my stay, which is odd because I liked it. There is also coin laundry available and in the common room you'll find maps, tour suggestions and complimentary coffee and coup a noodles for a small cost.
Conveniently close to old town and next door to mall
Clean rooms, seem near new
Owners speak excellent English
Not a good value, 500 baht for the following:
Requires up to four different keys to access complex/room
Room has no outside windows
Room shares bathroom/showers with multiple other rooms
Beds are rock hard
No towels provided, no water provided
Sound travels throughout the rooms, seems they were not designed to be accommodations originally, possible offices
Internet comes and goes, seems slow most of the time
Overall I had a terrible nights sleep due to noise at 1, 2 and 3am. Sound travels and the bed was very uncomfortable. I left after one night.
A quiet and comfortable place for someone who needs a basic but clean room at a low rate for an extended period of time. Khun Kot and her assistants go out of their way to ensure you will have a very pleasant stay. Excellent location if you have a bike to whizz around town and outside. I'll be back for sure!
We stayed overnight here in a triple room. Our bus was due to arrive at 1am and we informed the hotel of this. However, it only got in after 3am so imagine our surprise when we roll up to SS Hotel at 3.45am and the owner has waited up for us! The lady in charge of this hotel is one of the nicest and most genuine and helpful hoteliers I have met in a variety of different hotels in Thailand.
The room itself had comfortable beds for three and a good fan as well as a ventilation fan above the door which also allowed in fresh air and kept the room cool. All you can ask for at such a cheap price. The bathrooms were located nearby and there was a low ratio of guests per bathroom per floor! I'd recommend this place highly if you're on a budget.
