Once you arrive to Fatuma’s tower in Shela, Lamu Island, you will never want to leave. Every single detail in the room and the common spaces is carefully selected with impeccable taste. In our room we had a balcony with a day bed for lounging where we spent a lot of time as it was so comfortable and perfect. We really enjoyed being welcomed by the owner of Fatuma’s Tower which gave even more of a personal touch to our stay. The breakfast, which we enjoyed in the garden, was delicious with juice and fresh fruits from their own garden, local coffee and eggs prepared as you wish. There is even a little splash pool perfect for a dip when you return from the gorgeous beach in Shela.
Great and beautiful location, away from crowded Lamu and at the same time it’s very near! Fatumas is in the Centre of Shela, 5 minutes to coast and dunes! Plunge pool, great garden perfect hosts ( we had an upgrade!!) perfect WIFI. Great and helpful friendly staff! They serve drinks and food on demand! Homesick to the place! Just marvelous there
Fatuma's Tower is a hidden gem in Shela Village full of history, culture, artwork, and antiques. The grounds are beautiful, built around a stunning tree. Food is amazing, plunge pool is great. Rooms have lots of local character. The staff is incredibly helpful. Massage available onsite. This was the first place I stayed in Shela and I've sent many people back. They love the privacy, the great service, and the yoga studio. The owner, Gilles, has been a resident for decades and is extremely helpful in planning sunset cruises, walking tours, and more. Book Fatuma's Tower and you won't regret it!
This is the most peaceful, cozy, relaxing, and beautiful guest house I've ever seen. My wife and I went here to celebrate our 30th birthdays. I had booked the trip as a surprise for my wife, and from my first email Gillies the owner was incredibly accommodating and helpful. Once we arrived, the same went for all of the small staff. They are incredibly friendly, personal, attentive, kind and helpful guys without ever being intrusive. They arranged a surprise sunset Dhow ride with flower petals in the sail that showered us as it unfurled, arranged whatever we wanted for dinner. There was just amazing detail that went above and beyond but ever felt like it was too much. Someone was always there when you needed them and otherwise you felt like you had the whole garden to yourself.
The food was incredible - fresh, delicious, plentiful seafood dishes made and served in whatever style, at whatever time, and whatever part of the guest house you'd like. There is a small shared balcony dining space in the tower where you can eat with other guests, as we did for lunch; there's a table in the garden where you can eat privately or with others; or they will wherever you on your rooftop, balcony, or patio area in your room.
And last but certainly not least is the place itself. Gillies is a former antique collector/dealer and has created a true oasis. The garden is beautiful, welcoming and peaceful without being overly manicured. The plunge pool feels like a secret spring. Every room in the house, every light, and every antique wooden table and Lamu style daybed is unique, interesting, and extremely comfortable and inviting. Everything looks like it is exactly where it was supposed to be, though I'm sure it was carefully thought through. The whole place is just rejuvenating and you feel like you've been living there for years, even though I've never been anywhere like it.
Shela is lovely no matter what, but I can't imagine a better place to stay - there or anywhere else!
Fatuma's Tower is simply a wonderful place to stay in Shela on the island of Lamu. It is situated in the village, set back from the seafront, which is only a short walk.
Fatuma's Tower as it says on the website is about "peace, space and tranquility". It is all that with delicious breakfast with fresh juices and fruits and seafood dinners in the garden. You can cool off in the small pool or practice your asanas in the yoga room. Take strolls thru the village, swim in the ocean and return to the peace and beauty of Fatuma's Tower.
The staff encouraged us to make this our home and this was so easy to do as everyone was so warm. Every request from early morning tea to a birthday dinner was met with an eagerness to please. Thank you to everyone for the excellent birthday dinner with the lovely homemade cake and special song and drumming. Extra special thank you to Peter, Samuel and Grace for their lovingly kindness.
Your stay on Shela is not complete without visiting Peponi for great food and sunset drinks, Ali for interesting art and Aman for all things beautiful.
