First plus: location. Tai Hoe is across the Farrer Park MRT (if you exit from the west gate of the City Square Mall) and between two main roads served by SMRT buses (Jalan Besar and Serangoon Rd), and it's surrounded by stores and hawker restaurants (including ones that sell alcohol, but you need to familiarize yourself with the drinking law in SG first). Second would be its staff. They're excellent! Bhavani is one of the staff to go to, particularly for being so helpful, friendly, and enthusiastic. Now this is the kind of service you'd pride yourself when you're in the tourism industry. Last but I think most important is the Handy Travel phone they rent to you for free. Seriously, this is the highlight of Tai Hoe's service for you can now say goodbye to buying temporary Singtel card or carrying booklets and paper maps everywhere. I also appreciate the electrical plug adapter they provide in the room.

What can be improved: information whether the room has windows or not (their triple room doesn't have any), the quality of the towels (the fluffier the better, please), and sound-proofedness of their rooms (street noise was not an issue, but people chattering was). That the wifi can only be used on one device and the password is changed daily is also a bit tricky, but it's nothing I couldn't manage. However, this is a typical budget hotel problem, not singularly Tai Hoe's.

If you're only using your hotel room for sleeping and taking shower with the topping of friendly service, I definitely suggest Tai Hoe.

The Positives of the Hotel :
1) Excellent Location - Especially close to Little India and Farrer Park MRT
2) Access to eating joints & shopping
3) Most hotels in Singapore are expensive among budget hotels this one is clean and comfortable. I checked a few others in the vicinity and the cleanliness standards of this hotel seemed better. The rooms in Singapore are small so even the neighboring Park Royal on the Kitchener road has small rooms at double the price.
4) Hot water is available outside the room and the staff is generous with providing enough drinking water bottles. The room also has hair dryer, tea/coffee making options and a mini fridge, a decent a/c and a TV
5) OK place to stay if you are on a tourist visit and will be out of hotel most of the day to return to the hotel only to sleep at night

The Negatives :
1) The staff is curt and not very helpful, most of the time they looked bogged down with work overload
2) There is an early check in charge, they quote different amount to different guests, my friend at Sg wrote to them to confirm my booking as a separate email and they mentioned S$50 to him and when I wrote to them from India they mentioned S$70. I pointed this out to them but they were bent on charging me S$70 and I obviously had no choice. They also quote a late check out rate of S$50 which was thankfully consistent.
3) I booked for the room on their site and they use Paypal. I realized that the conversion rate that paypal applies on Sg dollar to INR is forbiddingly high, making the room rent higher than published
4) There is a free wifi if the room is booked thru their site but the hotel staff did not inform proactively, I realized this only after reading the Tripadvisor reviews
5) One of the review mentions that the hotel changes the room on request, this is totally untrue, they never change the rooms once checked in, we requested them atleast 3 times but were told they are overbooked. This despite the fact that I had specially requested a non smoking room with window on a higher floor on the higher level where it is quiet.
6) The hotel does not have any kitchen of sorts but the fact that all eating joints with enough options for veg/non veg Indian and Chinese/Continental fare at stone's throw helps.
7) The internet at the reception is slow and expensive and the reception area is small and very functional.

Singapore is an expensive city, especially compared to Thailand / Malaysia, the money paid in a budget hotel will fetch a nice 4 star hotel. I would still recommend this hotel if the expectations are not sky high.

Response from Cliff G, Guest Relations Manager at Tai Hoe Hotel
Responded 9 Sept 2013
Dear Subbu Thank you for your review and I would have liked to welcome you personally due to the many misunderstanding arising from the email exchanges but I was away on a business trip. It is true that the staff were bogged down with work during your stay with us. Two staff had to go back home on urgent leave and the remaining staff had to try to hold the fort as well as they could till the situation returned to normal or till I returned, whichever came first. Both the early check in and late check out charge are consistent and I have spoken with the staff in question who made the mistake to remind him of our hotel standard policies. Human errors happen all the time and I hope you rest assured that we are not in the business of making extra profits by charging random rates for early check in or late check out. Where possible, we change hotel rooms to accommodate our guests - there is no reason to deny our guest of an empty room if it could potentially help them enjoy their stay more. I noticed that you have travelled with your family and if you had been after another family room, it might have been difficult as those rooms sell out very fast. Thank you once again for a very balanced and objective take on our hotel and we will work on the areas which could do with some improvement to provide a better experience for our guests.

We have booked a family room. two beds were there & no space even to keep our languages. however its next to Mushthapa Shopping mall & MRT is on other side of the road. you can travel anywhere from MRT form this location. there are many food outlets are around & you can enjoy any kind of food. booking was done through booking dot com & better to reserve a room after you physically seen it. AC was OK & they provide clean towels bed sheet daily. place is ok to just to manage your night,.

I stayed at this hotel for 3 nights with my Family. This is one of the worst hotels I ever stayed in my life.I don't know how people post some good reviews here?? Bedsheets never changed and found hair all over at first day.The toilet is so small there is no space for any shower. If you are tired and wished to sleep, forget about it. You can hear everything that is going on in the next room.People coming late night and banging the doors are normal things.Staff is nice except one named 'Spencer". I never deal with a rude arrogant person with the worst attitude.he felt like he owned this hotel and we are his slaves. We even witnessed he was yelling and arguing with a family with kids in front of others. There is no manager or anyone you can go and ask anything. If you are with the family please stay away from this filthy hotel or you have to keep your kids away from the noise from the other room.

Stayed here for 3 nights. I booked triple room and it was very spacious for singapore hotels standard, especially for the price you pay. The room i stayed had just been renovated, so it was nice, clean and new, the only downside was the room had no window. So make sure you request a room with window if you want. The location also very great, you only have to cross the street to get to the mall and MRT. 7-11 on walking distance, food court just across the street. Very recommended hotel!

We have stayed in room 401 suitable for 3persons. Rooms are very small but clean. 1. They have fridge. 2. No other charges. I also booked on MMT. 3. Yes, depends on availability. 4. They change towels n bed linen everyday. They can also help you in ticket booking, cab booking (grab/uber).

Hi the rooms are suitably big for a Singapore budget hotel. 1). As I recall the bigger room has no window but the smaller family room has window. 2).Blankets, pillows basic shower and beverages are provided. 3). The rooms are big enough for 4 adults. My mom was on wheelchair and with the wheel chair we were able to transfer her on and off the bed comfortably. 4). This hotel has lots of tourist from India. It is next door to Mistafas and City Square Mall. In the event the electrical points are different you can buy an adapter from Mustfas. I cost around SGD$5 . Hope this answers your questions. Have a pleasant trip and stay in Singapore. Cheers
