We arrived here by vehicle from Montevideo. Having gone past Colonia you then turn off the tarmac and on to tracks (which were pretty smooth). You then arrive a a very unpretentious gate to enter the property which is in effect part of the garden.
We were warmly greeted by the owner and shown to our room. We had the master suite. This is accessed up stairs so may not be suitable for all. It has a bedroom with a very large bed, a lounge with sofa and chairs. A bathroom with a shower. As I recall the owner is a former engineer and prides in some of the items such as the TV hidden in the cabinet at the end of the bed.
The bedroom and lounge have large windows which have sliding screens to keep the sun out at certain times of day. There is sliding door from the lounge out on to a large wooden deck. This has two wooden sun loungers and a hot tub. Beneath is another deck area with the swimming pool. The view is over the gardens, and trees in the swamp area to the River Plate. A few tall buildings in Buenos Aries can just be seen.
There is an observation tower in the grounds. There is a track down to the "Beach", this is fresh water not the sea.
The service received was exemplary and nothing was too much trouble. The whole place is run for the comfort and enjoyment of guests.
There area activities including a trip in to Colonia but we just were totally content to spend our time relaxing and enjoying the views and bird life.
Within the building there is a lounge with books and games if you need them, there is a more open indoor seating area near the pool which also adjoins the restaurant.
The owner has 3 dogs, we met 2 and they were very friendly. Also a couple of cats which we did not see.
The name includes the word "Gourmet" and this is certainly the case. All meals are prepared to order and the owner gives his suggestions but if there is something you do not like an instant alternative is made available.
Highlights include the Beach BBQ to watch the sunset and the Uruguay indoor BBQ. Portions are quite large but they will adapt to your requirements.
During the day there are offers of drinks, both non alcoholic and alcoholic, The memory of standing on the deck looking over to the River Plate, glass of red wine, loads of birds will stay with me for ever.
Anyone going anywhere near must go here. Just splendid.
We were nearby Colonia del Sacramento and we found out Rio Ancho to have lunch. The place is simply amazing, dreamy, its a place were you breath peace and ease. Deborah invited us with a refreshment and gave us a tour of the house, each room invited us to stay. When we arrived to the dinning room we chosen the three steps lunch, and both options, so we could taste everything. I have to say that each dish was tasty, well served, and every detail was taken into consideration. This lunch was the best experience of the weekend. I want to go back and this time stay in one of the rooms.
There are too many places to start with rio ancho - food, service, room - but I will start with what matters to us which is the magic
- the magic is Marcelo and his family who make you feel like guests in their home
- the magic is an evening swim in the rio plata followed by sunset cocktails on the beach around a fire talking about whatever
- the magic is a hidden drench shower in the trees
- the magic is chatting to Patricia the chef about what you will eat tonite
Besides that the rooms are lovely, the beds are great, the house is a mid-century modern dream, the gardens are lush. The food is amazing. The drinks lush. The location perfect.
If you want to relax amongst friends this is the place. Sit back, engage, enjoy!
If you want to see Colonia you must do it by way of Rio Ancho Lodge. It is a magnificent hideaway just 10 minutes or so from town. It is built on a hill and architecturally it looks like it could be in Architectural Digest. The three rooms are lovely. We stayed in a suite with a huge terrace with a swimming pool overlooking lush greenery and the river. You can stay overnight which we did (could have stayed more nights) or just go for a gourmet lunch or dinner in its restaurant.
When we arrived the staff greeted us like long lost friends. We had a light salad lunch with wine, retired to our room to nap and then were taken down to the beach for a sunset with drinks and hors d'oervres. A fire was lit and it was just heaven. We had a 4 course tasting dinner with different wines and went to sleep happy and sated.
A lovely breakfast was served as well. The staff is most helpful, charming and gracious and the chef is just a delight.
They are most helpful when problems arise like my husband not having enough of a certain kind of pill and had a bad reaction. Medics were called just in case they were needed and a pharmacy was found where the medication could be had. One of their staffers went into town to get it. In addition our ferry had to be changed and again someone went into town to get us new tickets.
We were so lucky to be there. We cannot recommend it enough. One of the best properties we've been to in over 50 years of travelling.
It is for couples and very romantic. Harriet and Michael from Manhattan
Great experience, far from the city, nice and isolated! Details in the room are great, food is amazing, customized service is quite nice! (Only 3 rooms!) Located right on the beach, bikes are available for a ride around the surrounding countryside. Telescope also available to explore the clear sky away from city lights. Totally worth going for a short stay, especially if you already know the city and are up for a peaceful stay away from everyday life!
