The Fisherman’s Villas is a lovely set of villas set up on a hillside overlooking Shark Bay. The villas are interspersed amongst other villas owned by different companies.
They offer free pickup service from the pier and bring you to your room. The rooms are wonderfully positioned with great views of the ocean and bay below. It’s easy to just sit on your patio all day, jumping into the pool from time to time to cool off, and just watch the beauty all around you.
Being positioned on the hills, they have wonderful sea breezes that blow in during the morning and evening hours. It was easy for us to spend hours upon hours every day just sitting on the patio overlooking the ocean, feeling the warm wind blow upon us. It was heavenly.
The villas have everything you could need to keep you comfortable for an extended stay. There is a very thorough booklet with loads of information about the island, services offered and how you can enjoy your time on Koh Tao. There is also another booklet that has menus of all the places you can order food to be delivered to your villa. If you do not prefer to eat in delivery, the villas are about a 8 minute motorbike ride into town where you can find many restaurants. Motorbikes can easily be rented with the help of a provider who lives just down the road.
Speaking of roads, the roads leading up the villa are very steep. If you have driven motorbikes before, you should be fine if you are a cautious driver. However, for the novices, it might be best to gain confidence on other roads before going up these hillsides. The steepness of the roads is what provides the villas with such wonderful views looking down on the water below, but they do take some getting used to.
We initially booked the Sailfish house, which has a wonderful view of the bay and peninsula below. You can see the different shades of blue in the bay and it juxtaposes with the rocks and trees on the hillsides around it. We loved the villa and the plunge pool was great, but there was some construction that was taking place on that side of the hill which also required a generator to be running during COVID season.
The owner on site, Tom, was super helpful the entire time and recognized that this sound might get old after a few days. Once a quieter room opened up, he graciously offered it to us—even though it was a massive upgrade from our booked room. We loved our new villa (Fisherman’s) and it offered a much more horizon view of the open sea rather than the bay. Each day, we would wake up and sit on our patio for hours—watching the sea, feeling the breeze and jumping in the private pool to cool off. The evenings, we did the same until the stars came out and we shifted our view up rather than out horizontally.
In the end, we were really happy with the quieter side of the hill/cape, which provided us the silence we were seeking when booking a villa out of the main town.
Tom was always trying to make sure that we were happy and enjoying ourself the entire time while at Fisherman’s Villas. You’ll have his phone number and you can text him throughout your entire stay and he’ll be there to help you and respond to your inquires.
Overall, we would highly recommend Fisherman’s Villas again. Tom was super kind and helpful. The views were spectacular. The villas were spacious and comfortable and the patios had comfortable places to lounge in the shade and watch the world go by. Now back home, our memories bring us back to the place we’d rather be—The Fisherman’s Villas.
We stayed at The Fisherman´s Villas for three nights and we had the most wonderful stay!
The villa was so perfect we didn’t want to leave to explore the island (we did of course but that’s truely how wonderful this place is)
We had room service from one of the local restaurants (each villa has a restaurant guide) and our food from Bella Thai was hot and delicious! I highly recommend the chicken wings!
The Fisherman´s Villas are away from the main town, and for a romantic getaway this is perfect! My partner has a motorcycle license so we were able to rent a bike from halfway up the hill.
We also had in room massages which were lovely, however my only feedback on that was that there wasn’t actually anywhere for them to do the massage, i was put on couch cushions outside and my boyfriend on the bed. We would’ve liked it as a couples massages next to each other.
We will return and we highly recommend! The host was kind and courteous, he left us to our own devices but was also only a whatsap message away if we needed him.
This place was really lovely. It's very secluded and great for winding down on the island. It's up a very steep hill and away from the main part of the island.
Only experienced bike riders will make it to the hotel and only the pickup track taxis go there. This is unfortunate because t works out extremely expensive - as a hotel they do not have their own car so you are always paying through your nose for a taxi - there is a shuttle but you have to let them know in advance so it's a pain. Because on a holiday the last thing you are doing is planning hours in advance. Also they are sticklers for time which is stressful because of the cab is left waiting for even 5 mins you will get a text from the management to hurry up. They would not have these issues if they had their own car.
The room is nice but small- the well stocked kitchen (the mini bar and snacks is all priced better than anywhere on the island) and spacious bathroom are not connected but are well spaced out and have lovely views.
There's no restaurant but they have provided menus of places they deliver. And you have a kitchen to re heat everything because the food usually comes cold. They have a deal with a bike guy who charges double of everyone else on the island , but he is a nice guy and won't charge you for any scratches etc.
All in all it was a good experience and a really nice place to stay. Tom, the manager even organised a special night for my boyfriend to propose to me - which was really sweet and we loved that he was so enthusiastic and involved.
Privately owned villas run by a lovely couple from Sweden. The rooms are all unique with great views of shark bay.
There is no reception but the owners will take great care of you, whatever your needs.
Every room has a kitchen and well stocked minibar. If you need food for breakfast you can buy it for a good price at the neighbouring Cape Shark Villa reception or head down to the port to the 7-11.
Do bear in mind that you won’t be able to get anywhere without renting a motorbike due to the location, and taxis are quite highly priced from this area. The road is quite steep so not for a novice rider. The road up to the villa is a little broken in places, but it’s manageable. Don’t attempt it if you have never ridden before.
Otherwise everything here is perfect, the views, the peacefulness, the design of the villas. :-)
Make sure you do your research about Koh Tao before visiting. It is a very small island with limited infrastructure compared to other islands like Koh Samui (there are no shopping malls here). With this in mind it is perhaps not friendly for families with young children. However the limited infrastructure is what I love about this island, and if you are adventurous, you will love it too. There are some great snorkelling and diving areas surround the island and it’s not overcrowded.
Last week we stayed in P8 Red Snapper villa for 3 days and it was great. The view was absolutely stunning and we spent most of the first day chilling in the pool and admiring it.
The room had a kitchen and air con too, so we had everything we needed there. There was also a list of restaurants who delivered food with menus too, so if you are going here to chill out like us, this is ideal.
Since living in Thailand, my favourite ever place has changed only twice. And this villa on this island has now stolen the top spot.
I can't wait to go back. :)
