You want contrast? Do like we did: stay in Las Vegas for one week, then drive to Julian during the night and wake up to the mountain views.
Apple Tree Inn offers really good basic rooms (with refrigerator), and an outside pool. The fridge was welcomed by us as we were traveling with a 20 mo toddler. Our room had A/C and fan, but our friend's room only had the fan.
Good hiking and running trails with in 30min driving distance if you enjoy trails. I ran the Volcan Mountain Trail one morning. Wish we would've had more days to check out the other trails.
We had family staying in William Heise County Park for one night, so we went there for a quick visit. Really nice camping ground.
California Mountain Bakery is right across the street, and serve excellent breakfast sandwich and pies.
Next time we'll stay for longer to run more trails and do wine tasting in the evenings!
Economical, easy, great mountain getaway at Wynola Junction three miles from Julian. Clean, remodeled motel rooms, nice little pool, set back from highway so minimal noise, adjacent to one of our favorite restaurants, Jeremy’s on the Hill. Hiking and Julian close by.
This inn is older but in good repair and shows the old time charm of a bygone era. This location has handicapp accomoditations that go beyond many we have visited. All are ground floor rooms have direct access to the parking, with the handicap parking is as close to the room as possible. The room is simple without relaxing seating except the bed which is very comfortable but needs additional pillows. Flat screen tv with Direct TV access....small refrigerator and coffee maker. The bathroom is completely accessable with large sliding pocket door for wheelchair access and wall mounted single sink. The shower is a large walk in unit with hand rails, hand held shower head and has a full size portable shower chair. The toilet has all required handrails with dual flush controls on top making this one of the most complete and worry free handicapped bathrooms we have used.
The room has a heat exchanger mounted in the high in the wall near the bed, and we had a problem getting it to heat. The innkeeper came to rescue us quickly and showed us how to operate the wifi controls properly. There wasn't a luggage rack to put the main suitcase on and only one hanger in the closet.
Overall this room hits all of our requirements due to habdicaps, and is still adequate and comfortable. The Inn also has an outside pool for visitor use during warmer weather.
First, the place was booked solid (I believe 17 rooms but didn’t do formal count). Check in was easy, got a text welcoming ya and that our key would be in our room (we arrived late). 2 queen beds, small bathroom, fridge in room. Plenty of access points to charge electronics. Adequate parking, pool small but it was to cold to even consider (ambient temp not pool temp, didn’t even go in area). Walking distance to couple restaurants and a bakery. Not sure the office is staffed all of the time my wife had to call or text to get towels and an iron, but the items eventually arrived. Seems they’ve done some updating. All in all a basic motel, no frills, decent place to rest your head. Star deducted as there are no frills, not sure how the place is staffed truly, small size. All in all I would stay here again no problem.
Lodging was great. By great I don’t mean four seasons, lazy river, swim up bar, 4 star spa. I mean exactly what you would want for a trip to Julian. We had two rooms (10 and 11) that we’re both very clean with what appeared to be new furniture. Each unit had an AC/heater, TV, and decent bathroom. One had a mini fridge and the other had a coffee maker. There’s a pool that looks decent, but I don’t believe is heated. Great location with Wynola pizza across the street, average food, good alcohol selection, they had live music. Overall the place is comfortable, super laid back and in a good location. A little pricier than I would expect $200/night per room). But also booked it a week prior.
