Sunset apartment is a very cool 1 bedroom apartment located on the 2nd floor above the Marina laundry, in a working marina. Its an interesting setting with the activity of the boats. There is a beautiful pool on property! The apartment is very clean and pretty, with beautiful windows to let in light and views. It has a small but adequate bedroom with a very comfy queen bed, and a nice huge bathroom. The dresser, however, is located in the living room which can work fine if there is only one couple in the apartment. The living area is pretty and comfy, nice dining area and adequate kitchen, with full size refrigerator and stove. It dos not have shampoo, conditioner, or a hair dryer (which sent me scurrying out to the store.) It does have bath towels and nice big beach towels. Its nicest amenity is also its worst - the large beautiful deck with a fantastic view of the marina and Marathon sunsets - BUT - no shade which makes siting on the deck impossible during the late afternoon and sunset time. Such a shame that we spent this time sitting on the dock in an area with table with thatched roof, trekking down the stairs with our appetizers and wine because the beautiful deck was an oven. It was the same when we were here 2 years ago (last year they were closed due to hurricane.) There was an umbrella, which was very hard to open (needed 2 people), and totally inadequate to provide any shade. There are 2 large steps getting up to the stairs to access the apartment - not good for anyone with mobility issues. I would have considered this apartment a hidden gem except for the lack of shade.
My husband and I stayed at the Marathon Marina multiple weeks in the summer of 2015 and just returned for 6 nights 4th of July week 2017. Here is the good, the bad, and there's not really any ugly.
- We rate this 5 stars NOT because its a RItz. Exactly the opposite. We rate it a 5 because the property offers a wonderful, true Florida Keys experience. If you can "roll with it" and don't get wound up about small stuff, this is a great, relaxing property.
- property is a great marina facility, lots of slips, marine store, new fuel docks, protected bay and instant access to both the Gulf and the Ocean
- it has a great restaurant, Lazy Days, with great bartenders, amazing chef and unbelievable happy hour every day between 3 - 6. Who needs dinner?! But if you do, the food is excellent.
- It has a beautiful CHILLED salt water pool right on the ocean. I cannot stress how wonderful a CHILLED salt water pool is!
- Property has great bathrooms, showers and laundry facilities
- Bait, tackle and convenience store on site.
- Charters and sunset cruises on site.
- Additional restaurants in walking distance
- RV park is directly ocean front
- Fishing docks for kids and adults
- Manatees make regular appearances
We stayed in Unit 7 this time. For the price, for the Keys, we loved this unit. The view is spectacular, the giant 2nd floor porch is great first thing in the am and relaxing at sunset. (For those who commented that "the porch is blazing hot mid-day and they should have an umbrella..." - are you kidding with this? You don't sit on an outside deck anywhere in the Keys mid-day, umbrella or not). The unit decor is cute and the space for a 1 bedroom efficiency-style apartment was perfect for 2 (could also do 1 or 2 on the sofa). YES, there were some issues with a fan and some outlets, but, hey, we're in the Keys, so you just roll with it. More importantly, the Air conditioners ran GREAT and are very quiet and cold.
Overall, it would be really hard to top this experience unless you want to spend $500/night. Which we did that also, in Key West, but for a relaxing week without breaking the bank, we highly recommend Marathon Marina.
We stayed at 77 studio. Place was nice. Needs a little TLC.No blow dryer, and fans in both bedrooms not working great.
However, beautiful view, great office staff.
Pool was beautiful. grounds kept awesome.
lazydays was good.
Overall awesome time......
This one bedroom apartment (studio 7) has a great asset - and worst feature - a really fantastic deck facing west with virtually no shade! This is truly one of the best decks we've ever seen, with a fantastic view, lovely furniture, great space, and NO SHADE!!! So no dinners on the deck, no wine on the deck, it is too darn hot! The apartment is a 2nd floor walk-up, well laid out but small. If you have mobility issues, this is NOT the place for you as the 2 steps leading to the steps to the apartment are very high with no hand rail. The bathroom is fantastic but only opens to the bedroom. The bedroom (comfy bed!!) is so small that the dresser is in the living room! Not so bad if its just the 2 of you, not convenient otherwise. The kitchen is certainly OK space-wise with a big refrigerator and full stove, but all the pans need to be replaced, they are scratched and bowed - basically unsafe. Unfortunately, we cooked in every meal! There are no lamps - kind of unusual but, comfy couch and chair, and nice TV. Ironically, even though there is an iron and electric hand mixer (!!!) there was no hair dryer ( I HAVE NEVER BEEN TO A PLACE WITH NO HAIR DRYER EVEN IF IT HAD TO BE REQUESTED!!!!!) Also, no soap or shampoo, and only 1 roll of toilet paper to get you started - so be prepared with the first shopping. Towels were nice but no pool towels. The pool is gorgeous - very nice place to relax and swim. The marina is an interesting place. We really enjoyed this little place - sort of! It truly could be a hidden GEM!!!
My friend and I were planning a trip to Marathon so I looked at all websites looking for the best place for us... We didn't want a typical hotel or resort so we looked at air bnb and vrbo where we found studio 7 available for a reasonable price. I inquired and the owner responded. The place looked really cute online and after she emailed me back telling me that they were having a special deal going on where you stay 2 nights get one night free we booked it right away. We were going to stay there anyways but loved saving extra money. It was last week (Sept 8-11) I think its the slowest time of the year in the keys. So that may have been why. Either way we loved the little apartment. It was very clean, the kitchen had everything you needed, the bathroom was nice remodeled and very spacious, the living room had a couch and tv with a nice big window to look out on the water. There was a laundry room down stairs and you couldn't hear anything. Very quiet. The unit is upstairs where you have a huge patio with a big table, a big couch and also a little table for two.. The location was also great. You can walk to Lazy Days which is right next door, the pool was next to that which was also wonderful.. You can walk down to Sunsets (just about a mile away) which has the best sunset views. 7 mile restaurant was just down the street and a great cuban cafe close by. I highly recommend this place. Even if this unit is not avail I'm sure the other units are nice too.
