We stumbled upon this little gem online. The reviews were excellent, but, it turns out, they didn't do it justice.
The Kenz is priced like a budget-to-mid-range Indian hotel -- we paid less than $14 U.S. per night -- but it was far nicer than most of the much more costly places we've stayed in South Asia. For one thing, it was absolutely spotless. For another, the service was impeccable and warmly welcoming. The bed was large and very comfortable.
Our room wasn't large, but the clever, modern design gave us plenty of convenient places to stash our things.
Another plus: The lighting! There were multiple choices of recessed lights to switch on or off, depending on your mood -- from low and romantic to bright enough to read tiny print without strain. The bathroom light switched on by electric eye, so there was no fumbling for a switch.
The location worked well for us. It's right across the street from the Lissie metro station. Kochi's metro is still in the growing stage, so you can't yet go everywhere on it, but it's off to a good start. And outside the metro, ample auto-rickshaws are readily available. Not to mention, the intercity Ernakulam north railway station is only a short distance away.
Our room, which I think was #207, was non-airconditioned (you have a choice of AC or Non-AC), but it stayed a comfortable temperature, day and night, in January. The room faced west, but the hot afternoon sun was blocked from our window by the shade cast by the metro station and by the overhead metro tracks, right outside & above our window. (The metro is electric, so train noise is nonexistent.) The ceiling fan also helped keep us comfortable. Traffic noise from the busy street below disappeared at night, and by closing the windows during peak daytime travel hours.
The hotel did not yet have a restaurant when we visited, but there were places to eat close by. We especially liked the Ojeen "Food Court," behind the metro station, for inexpensive, delicious (and safely digestible!) Indian food.
If it isn't already obvious: Yes, we would gladly stay there again!
