I really can not understand all these good reviews. Clearly people who don’t get out enough, are easily pleased or are happy not to be in a tent.

The positives are that it was clean and has plenty of free parking. The Covid stuff was done well. The waiting staff did their best and were friendly and the breakfast was adequate. The location of course is perfect and on the Coast to Coast walk. Maybe the hotel relies on walkers who are booked in by agencies rather than word of mouth?

But the overall experience is a reminder of times gone by.

The bedroom was cold (the radiator tepid), the place in need of TLC and the evening meal was probably the worst I’ve had set before me. No choice and soggy veg, mash and a couple of slices of thinly sliced ‘beef’. Non meat eaters are catered for but still get exactly the same veg. Dry! It was a reminder of boarding house food of many years ago. Set meal times and general inflexibility and rules about what to eat when are just funny.

This place could be so good with some flair, a decent chef and a customer focussed attitude. More competition would make such a difference I’m sure.

I don’t review many places and try to be fair. This hotel isn’t expensive but it’s not cheap either. I think they need to up their game. But if the punters keep on coming then why should they I suppose.

Our car broke down and we were stranded in Rosthwaite with no phone signal. so unable to contact anyone. We stayed overnight at short notice and staff were very helpful, put together a meal even though it was very late and let us use their landline phone. The hotel was a friendly family run hotel, the food was delicious and the room was very nice. We shall be returning in happier circumstances.

We stayed her in late July 2020 whilst walkIng C2C. This was our 2nd walk but our first stay here. The welcome we received was lovely and our room was perfect. Plenty of room, nice hot shower/bath and comfortable bed. The room was equipped with towels and tea/coffee making facilities with WiFi also available. We hadn’t expected the set dinner but have to say that it was very nice with 5 courses served by excellent staff. Breakfast the next morning was once again served by the excellent staff there with plenty of choice. This may not be to everyone’s choice as it is not your usual modern hotel but I have to say that I enjoyed the experience and would stay again.

I turned up very wet on my Coast2Coast walk but was welcomed very warmly. All the staff were friendly and supportive, despite all the limitations due to Covid.
Drying facilities are excellent for walkers, the room was comfortable and the food excellent. The set menu at dinner was lovely, but the highlight was the afternoon cream tea which is a local speciality.
Highly recommended, and I wish I could have stayed longer.

An annual trip to the Lakes postponed from April.
Room - in the annexe
Twin aspect with views of the river. Loads of space ,the usual free hot drinks and a massive bathroom. No piles of useless cushions - thankfully.
Ok there is no choice for evening meal but the five courses served up were excellent.
Breakfast too was plentiful and good quality.
WiFi is available subject to location in this beautiful building with massive walls.
Oh and I must mention that the staff here are top notch. They could not do enough for us.
