The guys who ran the place were really nice and all- but the room was grim and dirty with bugs everywhere. The location is good, the breakfast was pretty average. I suppose it was relatively cheap but to be honest we couldn't wait to check out!! Two nights felt way too long!!
When we booked this hotel we were not expecting grand luxury, we were expecting what the reviews and the pictures on booking.com promised; simple beach accommodation. On arrival we were surprised to see that the garden was dominated by a poorly hidden pile of garbage and that the room sporting broken lamps, curtains ready to fall down, sheets with holes, worn out veranda furniture. he level of cleanliness was not a pleasant surprise either. The property lies along a lane leading to the beach, but does not communicate directly with it, the ground floor rooms have views into the unpainted garden wall of the neighbor.
Not impressed we queried the manager on this as well as the complete absence of wifi connectivity. He retorted that if we were expecting something better we should order in five star hotels, his hotel was cheap and that was not only in price.
We decided to cancel our reservation and find other accommodation. The rudeness of the manager now became rather confrontational and he told us we could not cancel and that the cancellation policy of booking.com did not apply to him, he demanded to have the stay paid for in full and that unless we complied he would call the police. at one point he even demanded we come to the station with him leaving our luggage behind as his hostage. We managed to call his bluff and were able to depart the property having paid the cancellation fee.
Feeling aggrieved we wanted too take some pictures to document the state of the premises as we would make a formal complaint to booking.com, This did not go down well and the manager threatened to break our Camera.
I cannot recommend this place for any price.
This is a great place, very close to the beach and to all the restaurants etc. of Uppuveli. The rooms are very big, and they are clean and hold the cool very nicely (a total luxury in this heat!).
The guys running things here are super helpful, always on hand to assist with anything you need- motorbike rental, tuk-tuk arranging, minor repairs in the room.
Shame there's nowhere to put your clothes etc. in the room, and the Wi-Fi is pretty poor and unreliable, but other than these two points, I'd totally recommend this place.
This hotel is poorly maintained. On our arrival, the room had no towels, toilet paper or soap. After 5 hours and a few kind reminders, these essentials were finally delivered. The bathroom had a vanity sink with a right angle tap....totally useless. There were two seperate shower heads, one for hot water and one for cold water, but only if you could work the complicated hot water system. The water pressure was extremely poor on the hot water system. The paint on the lower walls of the room was flaking off onto the floor. The small bugs on the verandah were very annoying. The power supply tripped many times during the day and the staff had to run over to the power box and reset it. These power cuts caused the air conditioner to turn off and require manual restarting. Consequently the room would heat up very quickly if you were absent. On our final day, we lost power for 7 hours while line maintenance was performed. This was no fault of the hotel. Some of the staff were good and breakfast was adequate. Our advise would be to choose another hotel. There are plenty to choose from that will give you much better value for money.
Palm Beach Resort has terrible facilities. The bathrooms are dirty, the shelf and the shower fell apart, the rooms stank like fish and the breakfast was disgusting. Great if you enjoy eight slices of white bread, burnt eggs and coffee/tea served 20 minutes after your meal. We had to wait 12 hours for our towels and linen, too. The windows in the room do not open, either, and the walls are stained. The wifi signal was terrible in our room and on the balcony. The only plus was that the manager was very helpful.
ABOUT SUKA THE TUK-TUK DRIVER
We made a mistake, thinking that Hotel Sakura was in Nilaveli, so we drove 5.8km with your driver for 1000! That price is criminal. (Normal rates are 50 to 80 Rupees per KM) We Had no choice, but to cancel the booking and drive to Nilavela, for 1500. We took a bus from Nilaveli to Trico for 20 Rupees!!! Just take the bus, because the tuk-tuk drivers in Trincomalee are all scam artists.
Was it my fault for agreeing to pay 1000? Yes. However, we thought we were going to Nilaveli, so when I calculated 12KM, I thought 1000 rupees was a reasonable fare, but to pay 1000 for 5.8km is not only a rip off, it's insulting and it is the impression we have of Trincomalee, a place that is very tricky when it comes to charging tourists.
We asked the driver to take us to the beach, and instead, he took us to a very expensive beach hotel (7000 Rupees a night).
