Booked a room at the lodge for a couple nights first weekend in October 2020. Used pics from Hotels.com app, which were NOTHING like what we walked into. First, door handle installed upside down. Had trouble opening. Room was tiny, dated and freezing. Temperature outside was in 50’s (Fahrenheit), window was open and Ptac unit (heater) was only putting out cold air. One light full-size blanket on a queen-size bed, which would never cover two adults. Blinds held together by paper clip. Vanity light rusted. Tub stained blue. Lightbulb out. Front desk unhelpful. Hotels app came through for us to relocate.
We stayed here for 3 nights in one of the Sleeping cabins with 2 queen beds. This lodge was a perfect location to hit some of the sights in that area - Mt Rushmore, Crazy Horse, Custer State Park. There is also a nice lake that has a trail to walk around. Our dogs loved the surprise snowfall we had in early september. Also, lots of good hiking trails nearby.
The room was fine with 2 queen beds, a fireplace, a microwave, coffee maker and small fridge. We were able to easily walk down to the lake and the lodge is within walking distance as well. The general store is further away, but walkable if you go the lake trail. It does get a little cold with only the wall unit to heat the place, so in the winter months, you may want to get the fireplace going.
The service upon check in and during dinner was fine. We were able to get what we needed when we needed it with no problems.
This is a great location at the top of the Black Hills. Cabins are nicely constructed and furnishings are good. However, the bathroom is quite small. House keeping is very spotty as we had to ask for new linens. Disappointing. Reception desk personnel did not wear masks. Also disappointing. Dinning room staff did but few guests did. No wonder South Dakota is leading the nation in infections. Dinning room service was excellent and food was very good.
The room was filthy. We had to strip the beds and ask for different linen. We also had to clean the bathroom. There as NO service during the stay so we had to exchange linens at the front desk. The beds are incredibly hard. Absolutely no view of the lake from the cabin or even near them..we might as well have been at the equestrian center for the access we did not have. The units are jammed on top of each other, the headlights of cars shown in constantly. Thankfully the front desk staff was very nice and helpful.
We just returned from a 5 night stay at Sylvan Lake. We were in cabin #510 which was a housekeeping cabin. When we got there I was pleasantly surprised at the size of the cabin, as I was not expecting the kitchen area to be as large as it was. We had a 2 burner stove, sink, microwave, fridge, coffee pot and toaster. There were also a few dishes, pots and pans, cups etc. in the cabin which was nice. Due to Covid we had to either leave our dirty towels in the room or take them with us up to the lodge (had to drive from where our cabin was) and pickup new towels. Also, we had to drive our own trash down to the dumpster daily to get rid of it. I understand that they cannot offer housekeeping service due to Covid but the 2 times I called and asked for towels I was told I had to come get them and I just felt like for having to pay full price, it felt like we were roughing it a bit too much. I felt that they should have come to deliver clean towels and take out the trash if we sat it outside but that never happened and when I called I was told we had to do it ourselves. I mean, these cabins are not cheap and there was legit NO towel or trash service much less any kind of cleaning (which I understand!) ! In addition, we found no less than 10 large black moths in our room over the course of our stay. They are harmless I’m sure but super gross and creepy. My kids would scream everytime! I called the front desk to tell them and was told someone would come spray, which did not happen either. All in, Sylvan Lake is beautiful, the cabins are nice, but they should not be charging full price right now given that we had to drive to get towels and take out our trash daily, and we never got clean sheets throughout our 5 night stay and didn’t even have a broom to sweep the floor if we wanted to. It felt so dirty by day 5 which was disappointing. If you go- just be prepared for these shortfalls right now. Also- Sylvan Lake is so crowded during the day with tourists from all over that it’s hard to enjoy it. Might be better to stay at Legion Lake where it’s less crazy!
