We live in Zurich and were looking for something different to do for the weekend. Found an alpine coaster (once the world's longest I think) in Imst, Austria that looked interesting. I emailed the Winkler on Friday and they responded quickly.
The Winkler was everything that I had imagined. Our 2 bedroom apartment was clean, comfortable and close to all things hoch Imst. The staff was extremely friendly and helpful. The onsite restaurant with outdoor patio served basic, satisfying and filling food. The Alpine Coaster, which is right across the street, was a blast.
The Winkler and Imst is a great destination if you want to get a way for a while and enjoy the outdoors and just hang with your family. Nothing fancy but great Austrian hospitality and scenery.
We stayed here as a base to explore the Alps. For the room we took a family sized apartment, which was clean and equipped well enough. The views from the balcony are were wonderful.
The key to this hotel though is the staff, it is family owned and they take great pride in the place - we were made to feel very welcome and will certainly be back again
We arrived around 6pm after a long drive from Venice area. Bad traffic along with getting off the autobahn for lunch (mistake because we couldn't get back on resulting in small windy roads for a couple of hours) thus we made it where we got to the hotel later than planned.
Eva, resort owner, offered to make us dinner. We were thrilled to eat and get settled into the room.
Snitzel and bier and Snitzel with bier/lemonade(Radler) were very good!
We saw a fireworks show from our deck and took a night walk down an easy loop trail.
The cow bells ringing was strangely comforting as we were going to sleep.
Our beds were very comfortable but the pillows in the master bedroom were typical European thin.
The bunk beds were very comfortable and my kids (20 & 16) said the beds and pillows were great.
We woke to a quiet resort but it quickly got busy. We took the chair lift up to the alpine slide starting point. Due to weather the lift was not running any higher.
We were concerned about hiking up and then back down as we are casual hikers. But surprisingly it was an enjoyable hike up to Latschenhütte and had lunch. We then hiked back to the alpine slide and rode down.
Eva gave us great advice for hikes, trails, mountain huts, and driving to our next hotel location.
This is not a fancy decorated resort, but simple clean room for a great price in a great location.
We hope to someday come back!
This was a family holiday in late July for 12 days. I must say we had a wonderful time. The area is in a beautiful part of Austria only 45 mins from Innsbruck. The countryside is beautiful, the people very friendly, (and have excellent English), and the hotel we stayed in was lovely. Eva, the owner, was a very friendly person, who gave us great information on places to go.
We ate in the hotel twice, and the food was class A. In fact, anywhere we ate was excellent.
The views from the hotel and the surrounding area were superb. Every day was a pleasure to wake up to, even when it rained. One of our highlights was watching a thunder and lightning storm from our balcony one evening.
There were lots of activities to do. We went up on the cable car beside us a couple of times; down the alpen coaster to the bottom; walked from the top of the mountain down; went to a town festival in Imst, and much more. Another highlight was going to Area 47 to go rafting down the river Inn. I could go on but visit it yourself and have a great time.
Only problem we had was our room was a bit too small for 4 of us. And the cooking facilities were too basic. We needed an oven but only had 2 rings and a microwave. But it gave us an excuse to eat out more.
Would I go back again? Absolutely. Thanks for everything, Eva, especially the fresh bread every morning.
