Santa Teresa - one of the best beaches in Costa Rica - world's surf mekka! Hotel offers you very friendly atmosphere, with a common kitchen and dining room. Swimming pool gives you refresh until late evening. Beautiful beach - about 200 m from the hotel. Comfortable rooms with own bathrooms, garden with plenty of birds.
I was very happy with Hotel Meli Melo. It has a convenient location near the path to the beach and is a short walk to the things you might need in town (small local supermarket, pharmacy, restaurants). They also have a couple of bikes to borrow if you need to ride go further.
The rooms are fairly basic but are very clean with AC and a comfortable bed. They have laid out the grounds very well so each room has its own shaded, semi-private area in front with some chairs, table, and a hammock.
Owners and cleaning staff are friendly.
Hotel Meli Melo is right at the center of Santa Teresa. There is a common kitchen (a rarity in hotels or B&B's in Costa Rica), giving you the liberty of cooking something for yourself, which can be nice after 2 weeks of restaurant food. From the hotel to the beach, it is only a 3 minutes walk, which is clearly very attractive for the many surfers also staying with us. Our room, n°7, was rather small, but was at the back of the hotel, and therefore the dust of the dirt road didn't reach our room. The room was clean but sober. Owners are friendly, easy to reach as the hotel rooms are built around their house, and helpful.
But... We booked this hotel long in advance, based on the positive reviews here. A few weeks before departure, 2 friends decided to join us. This hotel was fully booked by that time though, but they managed to book a room nextdoors in the OtroLado hotel. They paid the exact same price as we did, but their breakfast was included, their room much larger, their hotel had a nice pool and a parking lot away from the dust. It just seemed like a better deal for the same money.
I would say this hotel was by far the best deal we got within our three weeks of traveling in Costa Rica. We came here because it was recommended to us as a quite cheap place as we travel on a tight budget. I was really positively surprised as we got a really big room, with our own little terrasse and garden with hammock. As we had some bad experiences with insects (for example cockroaches) in other hotels it was a bliss in here: Everything was suuuper clean and everyday they came to maintain again. What I enjoyed the most though was the outdoor bathroom, beautifully decorated.
We used the beautiful and clean common kitchen every day.
The owners were also really helpful and even let us us their personal material to maintain our bikes we brought along.
I just finished staying at Meli Melo for two months and couldn't have asked for a better experience. Initially I had booked to stay for a month with intentions to jump to another town afterwards but its charm made it hard to leave and I eventually found myself extending my visit. Tho they are centrally located on the main road close to the surf/beach(barely a two minutes walk), restaurants, yoga and groceries store, their place feels like a private garden oasis.
The room was great, always clean (they clean daily), AC and comes with a table/chairs as well as your own hammock out front. I work off my laptop while traveling to surf so having a room that's quiet was important and I never had any issues with noise during my stay. I found the shared kitchen setup really great since you meet so many new people from it. Melanie and Fred were always a pleasure to talk to, weather it was getting some local advice on things to do and places to eat or just for a friendly visit. Warm and welcoming, they made you feel at home during your stay and were always available if ever you needed anything.
If you are looking for place to stay with a mellow vibe, great location, and friendly people I'd highly recommend checking out Meli Melo, you wont be disappointed.
Thank you for an awesome visit Melanie, Fred and family and look forward to visiting again soon.
