Perfect place for a single traveller in your twenties. Though it keeps its tropical charm, this place is giving you the comfort of having everything you want as a European. The food at their restaurant is affordable for a backpacker and really good, you don’t want to eat elsewhere. While enjoying your food you can connect in one of the many spaces they made for sitting together. But you got plenty of space inside and in front of your room, too. With only the beach in reach of 5 minutes walk and a food store next to it, the Begadang is pretty remote on a quit place in the north of the Island. But you have everything you want inside this vast place. To have the perfekt 100/100 please collect the Cushions on the seating area besides the pool when it’s raining. This way you got some more dry places to sit.
Begadang became my home away from home - I got sick, so stayed here for about 8 days and the staff genuinely took such good care of me, I can’t thank you guys enough. Besides that, the pool + activities to do around it are amazing. There’s an outside movie night every Tuesday and Saturday with free popcorn :) It’s a great hostel to socialise, but also chilled enough to have some me-time. I’ve stayed in both the private hut and the 4 bed dorm with en-suite bathroom- and I can recommend them both. The whole place is kept super clean at all times (literally saw staff cleaning all the time)! If there’s anything you notice that needs to be improved, the staff is open for feedback and will immediately try to help you. Oh, and there’s a cafe at the hostel with diverse options so you basically don’t even need to leave the hostel if you don’t want to :) - but if you do want to leave, the location is perfect and in walking distance to everything on the island, or you can rent a bike at the hostel to get around.
Dear Begadang, thanks for everything you did for me this past week, I can’t stress enough how much it meant to me!!
Stayed here for more than a week. Really good. James, the owner, is a super chap.
Initially stayed in one of the cheaper rooms (twin beds) with mozzie nets and a fan but then upgraded to an air-con twin which had large beds, large private bathroom, hot water and a front balcony. Pretty good wifi (it's rarely that great on Gili Air).
Lovely mushroom shaped pool and good food onsite (burger and chip was great). Plenty of comfortable socialising areas with bean bags and cushions.
What I really liked about this place was that there was a constant turnover of backpackers from all over the world who were all friendly and despite the average age being in their twenties were quite happy to engage with two old blokes who are 50 (on the outside, twenties on the inside).
Staff are lovely. Bike rentals available and laundry service was really well done (nothing came back damaged which sometimes happens for example when places leave things drying in the sun and you end up with a faded line across your t-shirt).
There aren't really any negatives although I think the private twin air-con room is expensive in high season (500k - it was 300k when we first stayed and then 350k a week later). I don't particularly mind as they were hit very hard last year after the earthquake but it would definitely make me consider other places. My only other slight negative is that they don't include any breakfast. Most places do include a light breakfast and I wish they would do this. Especially if paying 500k/night.
I would add photos but the TripAdvisor site is so crap you can't paste photos and I can't be bothered to save and upload.. Come on you halfwits this is 2019!
This hostel is a really great place with a great pool and entertainment area. They have a restaurant on site which makes great food. We went into a 3 bed private room with en suite and aircon, I would highly recommend these rooms. They were very basic but the aircon and en-suite are life changing. There was some renovations going on but most days they would only start at 9am. I would recommend you bring a blanket with if you feel the cold(aircon) as they only give you a sheet. You can hire bikes from them as well as book snorkel trips. Otherwise a great hostel with very friendly staff! Well worth the price.
Very glad I found and booked this place. I had limited time and was only looking at Gili T, but stumbled upon this and I booked off a whim mostly because of the good reviews. As a 34y/o solo traveler I was a bit worried it would be too much a party hostel, but this wasn't the case at all. There was a great chilled vibe, and was also a good place to meet interesting people who weren't only interested in partying.
The whole property has a nice tropical feel with bamboo huts, large grassy spaces and coconut trees spread through out. The mushroom pool is very cool, it's quite big and a great place to cool off. The bamboo huts are great, although a bit small. Would be nice to have more space to store your stuff. The non a/c ones might be a bit hot for some, and for light sleepers you can hear a lot of what goes on around you. Part of the rustic nature of the hut, which I loved. No safe, but you an lock the door with a padlock, and based on the feel of the hostel and the staff I felt that it was a theft was never going to be an issue here. Shared bathrooms and showers were in this large bamboo hut thing which was awesome. Very clean, and I liked the novelty factor of the bamboo showers. Warm water not a problem. No breakfast, but that was fine as the room rates were cheap enough, and there were a handful of local warungs within a short walk with very cheap meals.
All in all, this was my absolute favourite place I have stayed in such a long time! Great chilled vibe, awesome staff, fantastic pool, met some great people here, and all for such a good price. I loved Gili Air and I am glad I never even went to Gili T, despite it being my original intention. I will definitely come back here the first chance I get!
