Chateau de la Fontanelle is a beautiful rural retreat that is a great headquarters for exploring Brittany. Our delightful hosts were very friendly and started each of our special days there with an outstanding petit-dejeuner. Craftsmanship shows itself in every room where highest quality amenities are mingled with the past. The Great Room, where breakfast is served, is beautiful and our hosts were happy to join us to answer questions and guide our explorations. (One small suggestion - we like meeting people and would have enjoyed a common gathering space or den.) From here, visit nearby Vitre and Fougere! Both are outstanding. Rennes is close by as well and we took a day trip to Mont St Michel, an easy drive. Brittany has so many hidden gems to discover and spectacular history. A week is nowhere near enough.
Wonderful, lovingly restored chateau. Wish we could have stayed for more than the one night. Very friendly, informative and helpful hostess. Not very confident of her English, but spoke it very well. The nearby medieval town of Vitre is well worth a visit. First class breakfast - served in a wonderful dining room. Not easy to find as it is a little way off the main road but well worth the effort. A real Wow when you arrive.
This is an impressive building to drive up to with beautifully manicured gardens. The room we had was well furnished with a comfortable bed, good bathroom and a view over the gardens. It was lovely looking out from here in the morning with the mist hanging over the trees. The breakfast is served in a very grand dining room and comprises of a variety of bread and what appear to be home made conserves with delicious coffee and juice. The stay here re[presented a very welcome start to our journey through France. We did have to travel to Vitre for an evening meal, but this is a town worth visiting.
We only spent one night but we have all vowed to go back.
It is an amazing experience to see what this incredible couple have done to turn this old château into a truly superb bed and breakfast.
Bedrooms are huge, clean and warm . Quite luxurious.
Breakfast was excellent, and was served in the magnificent dining room.
If you want to experience the atmosphere of what an old château must have been like look no further.
We visit Bretagne for a long weekend and choose Chateau de la Fontenelle as our starting point. Situated between Rennes and Vitre it is not really in the Heart of the Bretagne but still conviniently located between the nort and west coast as well as getting deeper into the Bretagne.
We stayed for 2 nights, and we were the only guests during our stay. The family bought the Chateau 14 years ago (or so) and renovated it completely over a long period. You can see they put a lot of money and heart into it (and still do). Not only into the building but also the Garden. They live themself in one half of the chateau the other half consists of 4 rooms which one can rent (all quite differently decorated). Rooms were very big and very clean, nothing to complain about there. The estate also includes a small forest where you can enjoy a nice walk. The best part for us was the breakfast, not so much what was served (which was well enough) but sitting alone in the big and quite impressive Dinning room. Otherwise there is not much I can complain about our stay.
Maybe it is worth mentioning that they obviously do not serve food other than breakfast so you might wanna go to Vitre (highly recommended for a visit) or Chateaubourg. And it is needless to say that you will need a car to get around. Finding the Chateau is not as tricky as I thought in the beginning once you get yourself onto the road between Vitre and Chateaubourg you won't miss it. (There is a sign indicating the turn you have to take). Worth mentioning is also that the wife speaks English quite well so at least we had no communication issues although we regretfully did not speak a word French.
