We have just returned from a two night stay. This is a fabulous place with friendly and professional owners and staff. Room and food exceptional, it is under refurbishment and it is all beautifully done and still keeping the old charm of the place. You can really sense how happy the staff are working there for the present owners as the moral is very high and this in itself creates a fabulous atmosphere for everyone who stays. We will definitely be making a return trip very very soon especially for one of Richards Irish coffee's one of the best I have ever had made for me.

Rooms were clean and great, staff were nice. The food has really taken a dip and was also very inconsistent, as I ordered the same breakfast two days in a row, one coming perfectly cooked and presented, and the other was horrendously over cooked beyond belief. Some of the evening meals were lovely and others clearly came from a freezer. Just stick to the fish and chips and full English breakfasts if you go. The hotel as a whole was lovely, and very well situated for walkers and quiet getaways in a picturesque location.

We stayed for 2 nights over new year with our dog. The room (room 5 Ennerdale) was huge with a fabulous bathroom and really well appointed. We ate off the main menu on the first night and it was all good quality. The second night was new year's eve where the food was also good. The service was impeccable throughout with all the staff going the extra mile to make sure everything was OK (especially Alison and the manageress) - I accidentally left my phone charger in the room after checkout and it was returned to me today by special delivery! Breakfast were very good too. If I had to point out a couple of negatives - the new year's eve meal really started too early as we were twiddling our thumbs by 8.45pm so an 8pm or 8.30pm start would have worked better. Finally the band... I know they were last minute replacements so well done for finding someone at such short notice but oh dear, what an awful noise! Not the hotel's fault but don't call them back! The thick walls of an old coaching inn were very welcome!

This should have been a 5* review. The check in was very friendly and quick despite the pub being very busy. The room was large , clean and very nicely decorated. The bathroom was huge as was the bed. All the amenities you would want. The staff were attentive and always trying to make your stay a happy experience. The breakfast was included and plentiful, there is quite a large cooked offering in addition to the usual buffet option. We also had dinner in the pub on a couple of occasions which was very nice. Plenty of it and quite a lot of choices. A couple of more vegetarian options may be an idea for the future. This is a dog friendly Inn and dog treats are available to purchase from the bar. With the above, you will wonder why the 3* rating, well unfortunately it all started when we first arrived to the room. After returning to the room to get the bags and unpacking, we found we could not get out of the room, the door knob had jammed. We had to ring to only number we had ( head office) that rapidly put us through to the hotel. Front desk was obviously alarmed and sent someone straight up. They opened the door, declared’well that was easy’ and promptly shut the door as we gasped in horror!! Now 3 of us trapped. He got hold of a colleague who came to our room to release us . They told us that the manager was away until the following day and the handyman away until the day after that. They were panicking at this point as the Inn was fully booked so we could not be moved. My husband could see that they did not have any ideas so he offered to try and take the lock off to provide a temporary solution. We needed tools so the two members of staff went off to find tools. In the mean time, my husband used his penknife to take the door knob off, then another member of staff arrived with two knives- no tools in the Inn!!! We were left like this until the afternoon of our last day when it was eventually repaired. (3days) At no point did the manager make themselves known to us, not even to acknowledge the incident!!! We got nothing, this was a health and safely risk, if there was a fire, our work around could easily stop us from getting out of our room! This ruined what could have been an amazing few days away - shame on the management, this is not the way to treat guests that have got you out of a tricky situation. Is the only way you get acknowledgment these days is to make a fuss???

Had a good time, although the room we had was supposed to house us and our dog and it was far too small, no floor space whatsoever to put dogs bed on floor, we had to leave a chair outside of room in order to get in, on asking why the room was sold as a dog friendly room, we were informed that as head office take the bookings they allocate rooms, the staff were lovely and were very apologetic about the lack of room, apparently the upstairs rooms are larger, I would definitely book one of those if I went again. The breakfast was lovely lots of choices for both the continental and cooked breakfast. The staff couldn't do enough for you and were so friendly, on speaking to regulars we were told that since the inn had been bought out that standards had dropped we didn't find that at all, we cant comment on how it was pre buy out, but the staff are to be commended for how they made our stay so welcoming. The evening food was overpriced for what it was and choice was limited though very tasty. All in all I would recommend this place though I would make sure on room size before booking
