We have just completed a week’s stay in one of these outstanding rooms. Skilfully restored, each one has an individual character, designed to reflect the history of the caves whilst still incorporating all the luxuries and modern comforts. The rooms are just one part of the whole that makes up this special place. Our host Mario and his wonderful wife Antonella encouraged us to experience the best of this beautiful part of Italy, sample the freshest food and enjoy the warmth and welcome of its people. You can’t help but unwind from the stresses and strains of everyday life when you wake up to the amazing view and a beautiful breakfast of very fresh local produce. And of course we fell in love with Puglia. Who would not with such food, wine, architecture, landscapes and most of all those who shared their heritage with us. Thank you Mario and Antonella. The Italian Tourist Office must surely give you the highest award for your outstanding achievement that is Albergo Diffuso Il Casale.

Room Tip: Don’t hire a big car! The little streets of old town Ginosa were not designed for them.

What a great few days in Ginosa! Once we found Mario’s Albergo (well to be fair he found us!) we settled in for a relaxing & enjoyable stay. Our room was ideally placed with great views over the ravine & the ancient “troglodyte” cave-houses. It was very comfortably equipped with an excellent king-sized bed. Every morning Mario set us up a fabulous breakfast on the roof terrace, during which he explained many things about the area & recommended/booked us into top-class local restaurants (including a cracker in nearby Matera). A great find which we plan to return to one day - grazie mille Mario!

We had such a great time. We stayed here with our 3 year old son. All the amenities were foreseen and the cutest babybed! Mario and his wife shared with passion their knowledge of the region & even booked restaurants for us. This was a stay in a luxurious room, unbelievable setting surrounded by Southern hospitalita 😀😀😀

A beautiful spot right on the edge of the “Gravina di Ginosa” with a view of the ravine and the dwellings that we’re carved out of the stones in several layers of antique urban development. Wow! Mario and Antonella are wonderful hosts, having created very special rooms And lovely hospitality. Also enjoyed our visit to Il Forno Piccolo around the corner, where we had the best focaccia and met the wonderful proprietors.

We loved Ginosa. Real town with great daily live going on. Not too many tourist orientated business. So you can enjoy pottering around, enjoy lunch or dinner in local places. Excellent food all round. The Albergo overlooks the gravina with the old cave dwellings left as they were. Unlike Matera where all has been turned into a themed park, here you can wander in and out old dwellings, watch the local sheep farmer in action in the valley as from old. We stayed in the Melograna room which has an amazing view over the valley. The breakfast on the terrace was amazing in terms of quality, ambience and view. Simply the best of our trip. Arriving is not for the faintharted. You will need to negotiate the narrow inner old city streets. But you get immersed in the local look and feel which is great. We were introduced to the local baker around the corner who still makes bread by hand in a 200 year old oven. Simply sat down in the bakery and had a chat about live, bread, etc.. while people went about making and selling their excellent focaccia. Mario introduced us to other people so we visited the church with local guide who brought us back to an era where watching and interpreting paintings was the way religion was experienced. You can simply walk down the gravina from the albergo which is lovely. The room itself is of very high standard and authentic feel but with all modern comforts. We decided to make it our base to explore that side of Basilicata and Puglia. We will certainly go back to Ginosa for a relaxing stay.

Very pleasant stay. The welcoming tour of the bedroom give the dimension of the care that have been given to restore this unique and historical building. We stayed in the "malva room" which has its private entrance and a breakfast view on the prehistorical cave of the canyon. Cave into the rock itself the gigantic shower is outstanding. The bedroom is spacious and the stone arch ceiling is very very high giving a luxurious sensation. Breakfast is home made from the mom of the owner. Italian kitchen always gives a very pleasant wake up.

Ginosa is an oft-overlooked town as the tourists hordes of tourists throng Matera but if you want to have a relaxed time in a town with a history as old as that of Matera, then Ginosa is the place for you. And it’s only 20 mins away from Matera itself. And clearly, there is no place better to stay at, than at Il Casale. The painstakingly refurbished old rooms overlooking the ravine with the prehistorical caves are a sight to behold. Mario and his family have used all local decorations and ingredients to stay in touch with the surrounding ambience and give the buildings a touch of history in themselves. And of course, the host himself is so amazingly friendly - always accessible for recommendations of places to eat or visit, ready to call a friend (he seems to know everyone in all the surrounding towns as well!) for say, a visit of a ceramic lab or an Agriturismo. Cannot recommend this place highly enough!

The most unique hotel I have ever stayed in! Ultra clean, great bed, great shower, incredible breakfast with local food and Mario bent over backwards to service me with all my needs including a great breakfast for my family on my private terrace! The view from my room was right out of a historic movie! J can’t wait to go back with my wife!

Incredibly well-designed and unique rooms with unexpected details. A truly innovative blend of the local antiquities and a sophisticated sensibility. Coupled with the charm of the owner and the home-cooked goodies for breakfast on the terrace---It is really hard to imagine a more relaxing or enjoyable stay than Albergo Diffuso Il Casale. So romantic!

Unique boutique hotel by the ravines in Ginosa. Each room has its individual touch, with lovely details and furnished with antiques. We stayed at the room called "melagrana". The room is spacious with its high, curved ceiling and has a balcony opening out to the ravine. The room is equipped with wifi, minibar, air conditioning and television. The bathroom gives an luxurious feeling, with nice personalized details. We were served breakfast at the hotel terrace, consisting of a large variety of local products. Also the hotel owner, Mario arranged for us a visit to a local bakery that still uses a stone furnace. And in the evening after a long day he arranged a light meal on terrace, again consisting of local products. Albergo Diffuso il Casale and the hospitality of the hotel owner, Mario is something that really must be experienced!
