Arriving just after a rain shower the leafy forecourt was delightful in an idiotic rural setting. There is ample parking including an overflow area for when the main areas fill up.

Walking through the main entrance I walked up to the reception desk and checked in. It turns out when I made the online reservation I had accidentally selected the twin option rather than a double bed. How embarrassing! Never mind, the receptionist simply said that they would reconfigure the room while my partner and I were out the following day (this was a 3 night stay).

This hotel has an old fashioned physical key system rather than any form of swipe card, and they request that you lodge your key at reception when you leave the building for ostensibly fire safety reasons. This is fine if you can reach the key hook for your room by leaning over the desk, but does raise some concerns for the more security conscious as there isn’t always someone sat at the desk.

Our room was tastefully decorated, traditional in nature. The bedroom television/remote was either broken or the television was intentionally locked to only show BBC1. We decided we didn’t need TV.

The bedding and pillows were unbelievably comfortable. On the softer side so those who prefer a firmer pillow and mattress might not get the best nights sleep but I found it amazing.

The bathroom shower is a mixer tap rather than a power shower or similar. This does lead to the classic issue of the temperature wildly varying depending on water use across the rest of the building. Not ideal but if you showered at ‘unusual’ times you would get a consistent temperature.

We had breakfast each day of our stay. The staff were very flexible and basically anything you could ask for was available. Food was very good.

Overall a delightful stay, it wasn’t overly expensive and I would definitely stay here again.

The Old Rectory visit was all we wished for, a good sized warm, clean and comfortable room with lovely views was a treat alone, and our luggage was taken to the room, which was a nice gesture,
Freshly cooked breakfast from a good varied menu available was tasty, with snacks and drinks available throughout the day and evening.
The staff are very helpful and friendly with information on best places to visit and the local pubs and restaurants which serve the best food.
From very pleasant cleaners to Manager nothing was to much trouble, and seeing some members we had met on our previous visits still there speaks for its self, happy staff in happy work place make for a happy hotel.
The Old Rectory is full of charm and character and set in private grounds in peaceful Wem.

We spent a week here and found the hotel to be welcoming and friendly.
The rooms are pleasant and decorated with a homely feel, amenities in the room are replaced daily, the only problem I had with the rooms was the bed being a little small.
Breakfast was freshly cooked with plenty of choice.
A pleasant stay with friendly staff

What a treat to arrive at such an impressive and palatial venue! All arrangments beforehand were extremely helpfully handled, including a recommendation for a local eatery, as no evening meal would be available on the evening I arrived.

The room was splendid and comfortable, with a charming view of the hotel garden. The en-suite was generously-sized, and everything worked well. Although the fittings might be viewed as being a little tired, it suited me perfectly.

The breakfast was taken in a typically elegant room in the hotel. Whilst slightly meagre in comparison to some other venues, it would be unrealistic to expect home-style breakfasts in a venue of these dimensions.

Overall, a privelege to stay somewhere of such fascinating history, with such a unique style, and with such a helpful and committed staff team.

We booked the hotel as we were looking for a midway stopover on our way to North Wales. It’s ok, our room was a little tired and the bathroom could do with an update. They are following Covid 19 restrictions which is good but the breakfast service was poor. The hotel offered different options and we chose socially distance dining but we were not acknowledged for more than 15 mins when it is clearly indicated that it’s a table only service. The breakfast was ok. Shop around if you are staying here as we booked direct with the hotel after finding a rate online significantly cheaper than the standard rate.

My husband and I stayed here for two nights in November as we were attending a nearby wedding. We found the staff to be very friendly, welcoming and helpful, and the room was comfortable and very well equipped.

The day was very wet and one of the staff members kindly lent us a large umbrella (we had as usual forgotten ours) which proved to be very useful. She also directed us to a nearby jewellers as my husband's watch stopped working.

The breakfasts were delicious as were the bar snacks.

The only downside was that we could have been a bit warmer as we couldn't manage to regulate the heating.

Apart from that, all was excellent.

We needed to stay overnight in Wem for family reasons and very pleased to have booked into the Old Rectory. The rooms are comfortable with everything you need and the setting is lovely with plenty of parking and easy walking distance to Wem town Centre. The customer service is excellent,. all the staff are friendly and efficient and go above and beyond. We needed to leave before the official breakfast serving time but they arrange tea and croissants which was very kind. Food options on a Sunday night in Wem are limited but we were allowed to bring back a takeaway and had it on the hotel terrace which was very pleasant.

We booked the Rectory for one night as we were en route from Scotland to the South West with kids. The whole experience was great. I was drawn to this hotel as it had a garden and a family room - in fact this was two generous sized interconnecting rooms, each with their own bathroom. Couldn't be more comfortable - everyone slept well!

Also the hotel is beautiful, and interesting for kids to explore. They also played hide and seek in the lovely gardens.

The booking, check in, and breakfast was handled very well and the staff were extremely friendly.

Very happy and would return!

Beautiful hotel and grounds with 5 star service. Natalie checked us in, and nothing was too much trouble. She was friendly and knowledgeable about the local area. We stayed in room 16, The Morson Suite which had a lovely spa bath. It was a pleasure to sit and relax with a drink in The Drawing Room. There was no full food menu in the evening, but they offered light bites such as soup and paninis. There was an option to get food delivered and they would provide plates, cutlery and napkins. Highly recommended for a quiet, quaint traditional English Country House stay.
