This was our second stay at Hawkstone, having visited in June for my husband’s 40th birthday. We stayed in a cosy suite (Wolfe) which was beautiful. We cannot recommend this hotel enough - great customer service, delicious food and beautiful surroundings. Two nights away feels like a week as it is so relaxing. The grounds are beautiful to explore and the gym is well equipped. The highlight is definitely the staff who cannot do enough to make your stay enjoyable. We will be visiting again soon.

I attended a family wedding as a guest in July this year. The wedding venue and celebrations were great, but I was extremely disappointed with the behaviour of the manager on duty during the evening. Part of the wedding celebration included a firework display in the evening. The display was kept a secret from the guests, as it was a special gift from the bride to the groom. Without knowing that there was going to be a display, I wandered into the rear gardens (there were no barriers, signage or stewards to prevent entry into this area). While I was in the garden, I received a phone call from my son to say that fireworks were going to be starting soon. I was in a sheltered part of the garden (under a covered seat) and believed it was safer for me to stay where I was than to return to the hotel (as the fireworks could have started at any time). I received a phone call a few minutes later and was asked by a member of the hotel staff to stay where I was so that I could be located and escorted out of the garden. I waited for the "search party" to find me and while some individuals behaved courteously I was ignored by the duty manager when I asked why the area hadn't be cordoned off. When I asked again (admittedly frustrated at this point), the duty manager told me to "shut up, stop ruining the wedding and you're not welcome to stay". Flabbergasted, I asked her to confirm her position and was told that I was a "t***". I left the venue extremely upset. I emailed the hotel the following day saying that I had a concern about the behaviour of a senior member of staff. I received a call later in the afternoon, asking me to explain the nature of my concern. Wanting an assurance that the complaint was being dealt with at an appropriate level, I was advised that the person I was talking to was in fact the duty manager from the evening before. I explained that it was inappropriate for the complaint to be investigated by her and that I was surprised she wasn't aware of the nature of the concern. I received an assurance that I would be contacted again but I never received any reply. I have given the hotel an opportunity to respond to me on at least 2 occasions but they have totally ignored me. I was reluctant to post the review on here, as I didn't want it to taint my family members' special day. However, it's now a few months since the wedding and I'm hoping that they don't read this review! It appears that the hotel are delighted to receive praise (as we all are), but the true measure of customer service is how they respond to concerns and complaints. Sadly, the hotel staff seem more interested in brushing concerns under the carpet and protecting their staff.

Hi Nick, We are saddened to hear that you feel this way regarding how the above situation was handled. We believe that on receipt of your complaint, after speaking to the senior member of staff on duty, you then spoke to another member of our senior staff on the telephone where you outlined your complaint. After this, you then provided full details in an email, and action was taken to investigate this from there within the company. We understand that you did get in touch with Shropshire Council regarding your concerns, and we have since been investigated by them and they have confirmed they are more than happy with our procedures, policies, and health and safety practices regarding fireworks. The company which we use to provide the fireworks were also contacted and deemed safe and responsible. Regarding the member of staff, they have been dealt with accordingly using the correct disciplinary procedures and action has been taken to ensure this doesn't happen again, as we agree, the situation should have been handled differently. We are sorry that you felt this was brushed under the carpet which certainly was not the case. Should you wish to discuss this further please do not hesitate to contact laura@hawkstonehall.co.uk. Best Wishes,

Stayed after a wedding, this hotel is in the most beautiful setting, beautiful grounds which are well kept. The reception rooms are beautiful with period features. Bedrooms are comfortable, loved the little touches of the radio playing classical music and the soft lighting. I stayed in a classic room which had a rainfall shower and wonderful toiletries. I especially loved the pillow spray. Breakfast was more than adequate and the wedding breakfast was absolutely fantastic. What makes this hotel really special is the staff. They were all professional, helpful and friendly. A credit to this establishment and themselves. Would most definitely return. Didn't use the gym but it had all the equipment that I would have used and was housed in a beautiful area of the hotel overlooking the grounds.

Stayed with my wife and two other couples for a Sunday evening while we were on a golf trip. First, the good points.. Firstly, the good points - Beautiful building, staff are pleasant. Secondly, the not-so-great points - This place has not cracked the hotel concept. I have stayed in countless hotels around the country from The Savoy to a Travelodge so feel I have reasonable experience across all price ranges. We first arrived at the Hall mid-Sunday afternoon (about 3pm) and were all really hungry. We asked if we could get something to eat but were told there was no food available until we were booked to eat dinner at 7.30pm. No room service, no quickly knocked-up sandwiche, no snacks. Really strange policy for a premium rate hotel. So we then had to get travel out again in the neighbourhood (v rural) and hunt down a place to eat. Truly a bizarre scenario. When we got back, we went to our rooms. Three rooms for the three couples all on the same corridor, but my wife and I were allocated a room far smaller than the other couples (and looking out into the industrial-sized bins). Why would you do that to one couple in a larger party when we all paid the same room rate? At nearly £300 per night our room was tiny. Small double bed, small wardrobe, bathroom was ok, but nothing earth shattering. Surely on a quiet Sunday night (there seemed to be hardly anybody staying) it would have been possible to get three similar specced rooms for the same couples in the group. We only discovered this big difference in the rooms when we got together later on the evening so there was no point trying to switch rooms then. Our dinner experience was average. We got down to have pre-dinner drinks 30 mins before our booking, waited a while to get served and then when were eventually served we were rather brusquely told that we needed to order our food quickly because the kitchen was about to close! Dinner was adequate but nothing to write home about. The staff are perfectly reasonable but seem to be a little inexperienced but we all know how hard it is to hire people at the moment. As hotel residents, we wanted to have a few drinks after dinner but found that bar closed early on Sunday evening, so ended up have a couple of post-dinner drinks but going to bed earlier than we had hoped. Again premium hotels keep their bars open later and are rewarded by residents shelling out loads of cash for their drinks. The following morning, we were woken at 8am by drilling in the corridor outside our room by a joiner fitted a new internal door. Not great. Breakfast was reasonable and the we checked out with no issues but all-in-all, this is a beautiful place but just not cut out to be a high-end hotel. We won’t be going back and would advise you to stay clear. Maybe it is a better wedding venue but I hope the place is a success.
