2022 Travellers' Choice Best of the Best
There is a reason our nine-room adult-only luxury hotel is named The Castle: The magnificent structure perched 600 feet above the Pacific Ocean has arguably the most dramatic view in all of Costa Rica. Spectacular, yes. Stuffy, no. Our exceptional staff will ensure your vacation is the greatest of your lifetime. Dine at El Castillo’s own restaurant, Castillo’s Kitchen, a Chef’s Table concept mastering the evolution of Costa Rican cuisine. Experience elements of Costa Rica in every dish in a new and innovative way. Chef Pablo will dazzle you. Welcome to the jungle and about three percent of the biodiversity on this side of the planet. If you prefer wildlife over nightlife, this is the place for you. Whale watching, snorkeling, hiking, deep-sea fishing, zip lining, surfing, kayaking, beach combing, and sea turtle viewing are all within minutes of El Castillo.

We had a very enjoyable time at El Castillo. We had one of the larger rooms and it was very nice with a giant window with a view of the ocean. The hotel and pool area are stunning. We spent every afternoon reading by the pool and had all our meals there. The food was mostly excellent and it was fun to eat at the small table by the pool during the day and in a different area to watch the amazing sunset at night. Most of the staff were great as well, in particular the young woman at the bar during the day. Our only issue, and it was big, was that their website is very misleading. The offer several tours. I had emailed a head of time to reserve 3 tours. I also emailed close to our arrival and the morning of, to say we would be early but could just leave our bags til after our afternoon tour and check in afterwards. When we arrived we were told we needed to be at the tour operator an hour earlier than we were told and also that we would have to pay another $50 to have a cab take us there. Unfortunately we are not rich and were already splurging on the tour so another $50 made the tours too expensive. It didn't say anywhere on their webpage that they did not provide transportation. All other tours we did at the other 3 locations that we stayed always provided transportation so we were very surprised by this. We ended up having to cancel all our tours there and do them elsewhere where it was cheaper or skip them altogether. We only had 2 full days there so we ended up just walking the beach each morning. We did discover some cool arches and caves about 4 km north along the beach which we really enjoyed. We had some minor problems with meals- a bit slow getting water and food, but if there was anything wrong they brought us a free appetizer or dessert to make up for it. (We had not complained as we weren't in a rush...)

Hotel's Favourite
What an amazing hotel and experience. We spent 3 nights here and would have stayed more if we weren’t meeting friends in another town. The absolute best part of El Castillo is the people. The level of service they strive for is impeccable and they exceed it at every turn. LUIS and STEPHEN are my 2 favorite people on the planet now. They are kind, earnest and personable. Any request we had they made sure to fulfill. Learning it was my birthday they surprised me with dessert and a round of “Happy Birthday to You!” They enjoyed practicing their English, though it was excellent, and helped us brush up on Spanish words. We will miss them immensely and hope you will tell them hi when you stay here! Rebecca is the manager and she is also fantastic. She offered help with tours, transportation and recommendations. She is very professional and a huge asset to the hotel. The rest of the staff is also friendly, helpful and professional but I was not able to catch every name. And Charlie the iguana-like reptile who hangs out by the pool is who I want to be in my next life. :) The hotel itself is beautiful. Fantastic views of the ocean and the river that empties into it. You can see the tides change and the river go out into the sea all day come back all day so the landscape changes. The furnishings are so tastefully done and make you feel comfortable and right at home. We loved sitting in a number of spots around the main house and just enjoying the view and conversation with our friends. We stayed in the spa suites and loved the privacy. They were decorated in a more modern style but still our rooms felt cozy. I definitely recommend staying in both of these suites if you are traveling with another couple. The food was excellent. We ate dinner here 2 nights. We especially loved the breakfast every morning. I don’t think it gets better than coffee overlooking the ocean and pool.

El Castillo was hands-down the best hotel experience I've ever had!! Truly a gem. I went for a week with my boyfriend. It's a perfect vibe for couples. The view of the sunset and the beach were absolutely breathtaking and the pool was delightful. There were so many fun things to do that the hotel arranged for us, like horseback riding to waterfalls and zip-lining through the jungle canopy! Rebecca, Jorge, Kelly and the rest of the staff were all super cool and friendly and went above and beyond to make sure our needs were being met. They all even felt like family by the end of our stay! We loved every moment and already can't wait to return. I would 10/10 recommend this place to anyone!

I stayed at El Castillo for a week with my girlfriend, and it was one of the best hotel experiences I've ever had. The management and staff were not only amazingly helpful, professional, and super nice, by the end they all felt a bit like family! The ocean views are PERFECT, the rooms are beautiful, the infinity pool is delightful, and the food is soooo delicious. This is a real gem.

The wonderful staff at El Castillo made our honeymoon experience a beautiful memory. My husband and I had a long day of traveling but upon arrival at the hotel the staff was very welcoming and helpful. We were greeted with drinks of our choice and dinner was prepared for us to enjoy in our room. The manager Rebecca was the most help. She was able to book all of our excursions for us and helped arrange pick up and drop off of our rental car. This boutique hotel was so beautiful and peaceful. The town of Ojochal and Uvita have so much life and wonderful places to visit - the perfect combination of relaxation and adventure! El Castillo is the greatest place stay whenever you make your way to this beautiful country!

My husband and I have just returned from an amazing holiday in Costa Rica. We spent our last 3 days at El Castillo. We were only supposed to stay for two nights, but since it was so lovely we stayed an extra night. We had all our meals at the hotel, and enjoyed those. The view of the sunsets from our balcony was spectacular. The bed was comfortable and the staff attentive, charming - simply delightful. The beach were you could walk for miles at low tide was beautiful. Since we were at the end of our 3 week trip, we did not do any of the excursions, but I am sure they would be worthwhile. We highly recommend the place.

Wonderful hotel with exceptional view of the ocean. The infinity pool is simply formidable. The architectural style of the building and internal layout are very beautiful and balanced. Great care was given to interior decoration and furnishing to enhance the beauty of each room. There is a total of nine rooms which maintain an air of intimacy for guests. All rooms have a breathtaking ocean view with a small balcony. Suites also have a back balcony with mountain view which is also very nice. Staff is very friendly and will go out of their way to ensure you're comfortable and can enjoy your stay. We only spent three nights towards the end of a three week journey through Costa Rica, and were originally planning a few visits. However, we decided to stay on site to enjoy the hotel instead. No regrets!
