There were not too many hotels to choose from in the area. My local Japanese colleague selected Kurume Station Hotel as it was literally beside the train station which was convenient especially because it was pouring rain. Also, the price was right at 9,400.00 Yen per night including breakfast which I found out was a single tray of food like a cafeteria. Not nice.
The people at the front desk were very friendly.
The lobby was plain and old as was the restaurant which was closed.
The elevators were surprisingly new and modern but once the doors opened to my floor and I exited there was a bad smell. As I entered the room it got worse. Apparently the smell is not bad just a normal smell.
The room was quite large but the bed was not comfortable at all. Old mattress that your body sunk into. The bathroom was module which had a high step to walk into. It was clean.

Nice view of the Station and hills in the west. I love those heated toilet seats. When the bath and sink flow very well, that makes me happy. They provided a staff member who spoke English and who was very helpful. It was nice to know he worked extra just to be available to serve me - That is service.
The rooms are an example of an efficient use of space. From my bed, I could stretch out and get a bottle of water from the refrigerator and reach the desk. Talk about quiet, I thought I was the only one in the hotel until I started off to the restaurant for breakfast. Breakfast is simple and believe me, you will not gain much weight here.
