Elegant hotel with very pleasant baths on the top floor, especially on the roof.

Accessible 5 minutes from the station on foot.

High quality meal, very attentive service.

Pleasant bedding.

The view from the rooms is of limited interest, but is compensated by that of the roof.

Well located, this ryokan is ideal for experiencing the onsen available in the township, and is a manageable walk from the train station. The staff were very helpful and attentive. Little English was spoken, but this did not prove to be a barrier. The rooms were comfortable, and the shared bathrooms (on-site onsen) and shared toilets weren't an issue. The food served at dinner and breakfast as part of the half-board package was superb - high quality and beautifully presented. The rooms had recently renewed tatami mats and a sink in each room. Plenty of space, and the futon beds were made each evening. Yukatas were supplied to promenade between the onsens, and replaced each day. A very welcoming experience with kind staff which was worth the 2 1/2 hour train trip from Kyoto for a couple of days.

Room Tip: No rooms have any type of view, and is in a quieter area of town, so all rooms would be reasonable.

We wanted the experience of a traditional Japanese ryokan. We visited the Tsubakino Ryokan for three days in July and certainly enjoyed it. The service is perfect, the rooms are large and comfortable and I can't say enough about the meals! Also my husband and I were able to wear the traditional Japanese robes which was a highlight for us, even though I needed a lot of instruction on how to wear the robe. We enjoyed the private onsen as well. The community itself is very interesting, quiet and friendly, a nice change from the big cities in Japan.

This was my first experience at a ryokan. Everything was taken care of and the staff was very accommodating with all requests. The crab kaiseki (Japanese high end cuisine) was amazing. I highly recommend. I am now addicted to crab sashimi! It was also very awesome to explore the town in the traditional yukata and geta that the ryokan provided. All major seven onsens are easily within walking distance. The ryokan also has its own onsens too and if you're not comfortable with public bathing, the ryokan has private onsens available for a fee (about $10 US per 45 minutes if you reserve in advance, and around $30 per 45 minutes the day of). All in all, it was the quintessential Japanese relaxation experience. Also, ask for a box of matches on your way out. They make a really cool souvenir!

First experience in a ryokan and couldn't have been better!
The place is clearly not easy to reach, Kinosaki is best reached by direct bus from Osaka (3h), but it only runs like once or twice a day, same from Kobe. There's a direct train from Osaka too which takes 3 hours (this was our choice), but if you miss it, then you have to change like 4-6 times, travel 5 or more hours and even if it's easy and trains are punctual it makes the trip rather stressful.
However once you get to Kinosaki you can't be disappointed. It's the Japan every traveler is dreaming of: traditional architecture, ryokans and onsens, friendly people walking around in yukata (kind of light kimono used as a bath robe) and a lot of greenery; it's not a hot spring town, it's a full cultural experience.
Tsubakino ryokan is no exception from this picture. The design is traditional but including all modern features such as wifi, electronic toilets etc. The staff is very nice and helpful, the rooms (all of which are tatami rooms) and the whole place are kept impeccably clean, the food is picture perfect and fresh, the service is flawless.
The hotel has its own onsen, not big, but enough for a quick dip for a pregnant woman as myself; this is the common shower area too (no private showers, only toilets and sinks in the rooms). However if you're staying in this ryokan you get a pass for all the spas in town, which are at every corner.
Please note that there's virtually no English spoken so it may be useful to make all arrangements in advance if you don't speak Japanese.
I don't know if I would ever have the courage to make the trip again given that I don't live in Japan, but I can warmly recommend this place to anyone thirsty for a taste of traditional Japan.
