Overall, this hotel is very impressive. Great arrival experience, good product and facility.
But all these good experience and impression was blown up by one staff.
A very arrogant staff was not friendly and all answers were given by him was not customer oriented at all. A bit disappointed!!!
Not sure if I want to come back again.
We booked the most expensive rooms($800) and the staff that personally took care us did a very good job(Irina-san). We booked 3 rooms, the rooms are basically small houses. The photos you see on the webs make it look bigger than the actual thing, but it is still plenty of space. They separate standard booking and more expensive booking, with the latter getting more use of facility and better service.
Lots of heating systems in the house. The Ryokan is located slightly up in the mountain, so there is really nothing to walk around. Food was kaiseki type. It was fairly good, not great but it was better than we expected.
After 3 days of stay I have a feeling that this place is very good if you book a luxury type plan. The stuff/service that you get from it is very good, but the standard facilities/service feel very normal to not worth. I would return to this place with top luxury reservation, but absolutely not revisit with standard reservation.
--cons--
I would have given this place a 5/5, and recommend it to others if not for the disgustingly obnoxious communication before visit. It was one of the worst experience. Contacting them took forever to get a reply, then with reply that dont give you any answer(dont know why some Japan hotels do this). When I made reservations, they had my booking agent called me to ask for our details. I told them I would let them know once our schedule is confirmed, but they did it once again anyway… I found it frustrating that they could demand our details but we could barely get an email reply from them.
I can speak Japanese, so I switch to Japanese and got a better result. But even so the replies took days and unclear. I almost cancel the reservation just because of this. I mean contacting them is this bad, how will the actual thing be? After long hard consideration I gave them a try anyway. Eventually things seemed to settled, all questions got answered. Everything seemed to fine until 1 day before we travel, our Agent called again asking for our details!? I was speechless. I called them and told them to talk to the staff I had been contacting. Until the very last minute they didnt seem to get a hold of our info, even though I had told them multiple times. It was the worst pre-experience of an accommodation visit I ever had.
They say they can arrange pick up from Yufuin station, but dont count on it. They try to arrange it to fit their schedules and not yours.
Standard accommodation feels mediocre, I recommend booking luxury type only, anything below is not worth it.
1. The pick-up service. The hotel has the pick up service from the Yufuin train station. They came with private van to pick us up with a super-polite driver whom speak little english.
2. Check-in. The staffs were very polite since we stepped out of the van.
3. The rooms. We booked 2 rooms for our family and both rooms were very well prepared in every aspect. The staff who showed us the room was very polite and tried to fulfill every request we made. The onsen itself was very good and gave us relax feelings.
4. The food. The food was well prepared and served in a japanese course or Kaiseiki. The freshness of the food was incomparable. The flavor was also memorable.
I'd highly recommend anyone who are willing to pay to stay at this onsen-resort. You'd not regret it.
People who are not used to traveling or foreign tourists visiting Japan may be attracted by the location and atmosphere of the inn, but for those who are a little more experienced, I got the strong impression that it was a half-baked inn, contrary to the selling point.
Despite the large site and good location, most of the standard detached buildings are built tightly together in one place, surrounded on all sides by wooden fences, plants, and walkways, with a layout like a row of single-story detached houses.
The distance between the detached buildings is narrow, and the walkways and detached buildings are built in a small space close to each other, so when you walk down the walkway in front of the detached buildings, you can hear the voices of people bathing in the open-air baths attached to their rooms. Surprisingly, there was even a detached building that was surrounded by walkways on all four sides, and the layout lacked consideration for privacy.
The open-air bath attached to the special room was also terrible.
The open-air bath attached to the room was only in name; it was built under the eaves, with no decent plants, pebbles rolling around in front of it, and was surprisingly small.
It was only the size of a unit bath that could fit one adult, so it was not even possible for the whole family to soak in the bath together. There was no place to pour yourself over yourself or wash, so if you wanted to wash, you had to go back into the indoor bath first.
I have stayed in many rooms with open-air baths before, but I have never seen such a low-quality open-air bath attached to the room at a hotel in this price range.
Inexperienced travelers and foreign tourists visiting Japan may be attracted by the location and scenery of the inn, but experienced travelers will feel that it's just a formality.
The standard main building detached rooms are very cramped, and the voices and sounds of people in the open-air bath can be heard in the corridor outside, so privacy is not guaranteed. I was surprised to see that there were even rooms surrounded by corridors on all sides.
The special rooms in the annex are quiet and peaceful, but the open-air bath attached to the room is as small as a dog washing area. What's the point of neglecting your favorite hot spring when you're in a great hot spring resort?
Later on as she introduced the room to us, she was curt and matter of fact. She asked whether we spoke Mandarin. I'm not sure why as she spoke English with us all the time up to then. I think she's racist.
This poor start spoilt what should have been a lovely stay. Gettouan is pretty. Thankfully we did not have her serving us dinner or breakfast.
Gettouan is a luxury Japanese onsen ryokan in all the most traditional senses. Guest rooms are a series of detached traditional wooden bungalows. Upon check-in you will be greeted, offered tea, and initiated to the property after you have provided your details. Upon passing through the front desk/reception/bar/gift shop area, you are guided to your room/bungalow. The property is divided into a standard area with 12 bungalows and a deluxe adults-only area with 6 bungalows (4 of 6 sit adjacent to a stream). As you pass through the standard area you may sense that these bungalows are a little closer together, and you can see there is a public lounge, larger public onsen, and a shared dining room. While crossing bridges, rounding corners, and descending stairs you make your way into the deluxe side where guests have private dining, private mid-size onsen baths, and a little more space between neighbors. All 18 bungalows have personal in-room onsen baths.
We stayed on the deluxe side (peace and quiet was one of our goals, the munchkins on the other side seemed unlikely to foster it). Gourmet kaiseki cuisine may not be for everybody, but for those who do enjoy it, these were probably the best dinners and breakfasts we've had in years, maybe ever. The chef here is special. Each dinner lasted about 2 hours. The coffee bar and all the complimentary beverages in the room refrigerator were appreciated too.
The hotel attempted to pair us up with their best English speaking staff whenever possible. Keep in mind they also host European guests, and in recent years Chinese and Korean clientele have become the dominant tourist groups all over Kyushu. The server staff was excellent. So were the "ninja" housekeepers. You never saw them, but the room was cleaned, futons rolled or unrolled, shoes put away, and luggage moved.
The place is not perfect. Our room's WiFi went on the fritz the second day, a wooden counter had water damage, and my sandals hurt to walk in. Perhaps traditional food and buildings are not your cup of tea? For us, this wonderful traditional structure of wood, paper and tatami mats with kotatsu and hot spring fed bath, all sitting along an adjacent gurgling stream and peering into a forest overwhelmed our senses and sensibilities. Further consider the superb food and caring service. Any blemishes were pretty much washed away by the contentment from a natural setting, rich traditional cultural atmosphere, out of this world cuisine, and pampering service. We all need a little luxury sometimes, Gettouan fixed us up!
There are a great many places to stay in Yufuin as people come from all over Japan for their hot springs.
Yufuin Gettoan is a deluxe ryokan with large rooms, tip top modern amenities with traditional construction of the buildings.
Some rooms come with private onsens.
We had a deluxe room (Room name Kouhou-an) with a split living and sleeping room. It had a small private garden, a veranda, all naturally screened with trees and shrubs, and looking into the flowing forest and a nearby mountain side. A private onsen completed the room. This was big enough for two which is not often the case with a private onsen.
But the special feature that makes this ryokan fabulous are two "family" onsens, located about 20m from our room. It is first-come-first-served basis for use and who gets it can lock it for private usage. Imagine an outdoor onsen that is 8 by 5 meters in size which you can call your own! Located by a fast flowing river, it was one of my best onsen experiences!
Food in this ryokan was just as fabulous as the onsen experience.
