A great hideaway amongst the rice paddies and lush mountains. Lovely caretaker. Great for Totoro fans- Miyazaki fashioned the setting after the house and nearby area. Easy to buy food at market next to the train station before catching the bus up the mountain about 30 minutes.

The 'Villa' is a great piece of history and renovated in a beautiful manner. Surrounding are peaceful. Rice paddies and some forest. It's not hard to get there via train and the local 'bus'. Check time schedules up front though. Apart from the cowboy restaurant down the road (highly recommended, though check the opening hours) there's no shops around. Bring...

Okay, so you've seen the crowds of Tokyo and the endless temples of Kyoto, but you are still looking for that genuine rural Japanese experience. Time to head for Okayama to stay in a 100 year-old farmhouse. Hattoji is a place to unwind and reset yourself. You go there as much for what it DOESN'T have as what it does....

First thing I need to tell you: It could be that you're the only guest in the villa! If you're traveling alone, especially as a woman, that could be a bit weird and lonely (and creepy at night), because in this place there's literally nothing and nobody! Really, I just saw the old guy who checked me in. This guy was...

Drive there. It's the best way to enjoy hattoji and the surrounding Bizen countryside. The 'villa' is a large traditional old house with a warm kitchen, common wash area and five bedrooms. The bedrooms are actually large rooms with futons to sleep on. The house is spacious and the kitchen is really well equipped. The fridge and larder are usually...

It's a self-managed home, the owner Maruo-san is a sweet old lady who does not speak a word of English, but she's very friendly and kind. You can check-in whenever you want, Maruo-san arrives late in the evening. She makes you feel comfortable. However, you can take your futon, you can explore the surroundings by bicycle, make a stop at...

Hattoji international villa is a beautiful country house in a very nice village. If you want to stay in a quiet place far from the busy cities, this is the place for you. The house is big and equipped with the minimum of facilities to make your stay comfortable. No TV, no computers, no internet, no wifi, but just a...

What a nice stay between the rice fields in an old Japanese style farmhouse. we did stay here with our 2 young kids (1 & 3 years old) We slept on (thin) futons on tatami mat floors in real Japanese rooms divided by sliding (rice) paper screens. Bring your own food and drinks, because the nearest supermarket is 30 minutes...

I loved this Villa!! I have to say though that it is very basic If you are looking for even basic luxury you will be disappointed On the other hand if you want to explore the Japanese countryside and live like the pre-Meiji Japanese you will love it Make sure you take food The cooking facilities are adequate and when...

We really enjoyed our stay here as it was in a really authentic beautiful Japanese Farm House but with all the modern amenities you need, like a large fridge (which is very handy when bringing your own food to cook, since there is not much close by as far as shops), and cooking facilities. The Villa is typical Japanese style...

“This is a small villa so all the rooms are similar Incidentally I rated the service as terrible I could just as easily rated it as excellent There is really no service You just collect a key from a nearby house and then you are left on your own That was fine by me”

“the two rooms at the back of the house have a little more privacy than the ones at the front which are next to the lounge room area.”
