First of all, separate the concept of the ryokan from the basic idea of the onsen. From a number of perspectives, the Kawayu Onsen Fujiya might disappoint as a perfect ryokan. It's the bathing created by geothermal heated water rising up through the gravel banks of the river that is the unique quality here. As can happen in Japan, the...

The Onsen near the river are dug straight into the rocks/sand, you can even dig one yourself if you wish which was really unique. Stayed in a Japanese style room, which was nice and clean, the food felt very authentic Japanese, though very different from western food. The open air Onsen provided at the hotel was also very nice.

Stayed with private open-air onsen room. So great as room is very spacious, clean and nice setup. private onsen is large and with a great mountain view. Surprised by the included meals (breakfast and dinner). They are just so amazing. Sashimi (raw fish) lobster, abalone, etc... which I guess all those meals already worth half of the money we paid....

As always in Japan, this Ryokan is clean comfortable and friendly. We have rated it three instead of four only because we've recently stayed in better. The open air onsen is small but very nice, the inside onsen a little ordinary. As a treat there's also a public 'onsen' in the river across the road... a chance to mix it...

The main highlight of this hotel would be the hot spring. The indoor and outdoor hotsprings were so good, but what impresses me the most is the river hotspring. Sitting in the river, covered with the natural hot spring water in the chilly autumn is perfect. Simply perfect. The food is not the best but is still good. If you...

The hotel migh only be worth 4 stars but with the fantastic hot spring in the river it is 5! The rooms are spacious overlooking the river, dinner and breakfast is included, they have continental breakfast, dinner is traditional Japanese. Go out to the hot spings after dinner and the crowd is gone! There is also a smaller indoor onsen.

Long time ago there were no amusements except for the baths in Japan. Hot spring was rare and regarded dream spot. Many heroes went to this onsen. We can feel traditional cool Japan as we go to this local spot.

I stayed in this hotel for three nights in April. We chose a western style room with private onsen which costed around US$1000 per night. Room is nice with view over the natural onsen. good enough. but the food is just soso, especially at this price range. I have stayed in other onsen hotel in other areas of japan, rooms...

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at the Fujiya hotel in a ‘Kumano Modern’ twin with Private Hot Spring Bath and bathroom. The views of the Oto River and the mountains from our room were beautiful, peaceful and relaxing. The room décor was simple and very clean. Our stay included traditional kaiseki dinner and breakfast served in a private guestroom. There...
