My family has stayed at La Orquídea 3 times over the past two years. We were completely smitten with it on the first visit but it seems the upkeep of the place has slipped some in since our last visit. The Good: Private house located right on the laguna. Very friendly family of caretakers who provide breakfast. One of the few more affordable places on the laguna that can sleep 6 people (or up to 12 if you rent the main house as well.) The not so good: Nothing was set up down by the waterfront. In the past there have been chairs and hammocks all ready for use down at the water. The kayaks were not available for use, the life jackets need replacing, the only item available were three inner tubes. There is a huge dog on the property. He seems friendly enough, however he is not well controlled and we had to ask the caretakers multiple times to get him out of the houses. He burst into the guest house were my sister was sleeping in the early morning and was scratching on the bedroom doors. I found my 4 year old a bit terrified in her bedroom when I walked in to find him laying on the floor growling at her. Again, I don't mind dogs, I love them actually. But I don't like dogs that aren't trained and are jumping all over people. It was annoying.

This is a lovely home on the laguna. The caretakers are wonderful-friendly and warm. We were well taken care of but not intruded upon. Breakfast was delicious every morning and we loved getting to know everyone.

The staff at this guest house are warm and welcoming! The accommodations are simple and comfortable, and the daily homemade breakfast is delicious. With the beautiful lagoon just steps away, this is an ideal location to unplug and relax. The air conditioning in our room was especially welcoming after a day swimming and exploring in the Nicaraguan heat. Many tasty restaurants within walking distance, so the guesthouse is centrally located on the Laguna.

We stayed in the adjacent house, which was nice enough. Two bedrooms and one bathroom. The good: very nice, Spanish-only speaking husband and wife staff. Wife makes great meals for an extra fee. Lake is gorgeous. Clean, warm, swimable water. No real beach to speak of and sharp drop off in the lake making it deep water and only good for kids who can already swim. About a 90 second walk to the lake from the house. Very relaxed and non-touristy. The not-so-great: Small ACs are only in the bedrooms and labor to cool the rooms. No hot water in any of the faucets and the shower was hit or miss with having enough pressure to actually get clean. Furniture and kitchen are worn and needing to be replaced. House is down a very rutted driveway, so don't be confused. Looks like a washout. Bottom line: good choice for an unfancy, affordable time at the lake. Best for travelers who are self sufficient.

This small guesthouse is right on the water down the road a bit from the central hotel/restaurant area. Very quiet. We stayed in one room of the house that is available for rent (which has 2 bedrooms). The rooms in this house have a balcony that faces the garden and the lake beyond. It had its own sink/vanity and the bath was shared with one other room. We had access to the kitchen/living room downstairs as well. The staff were very helpful and friendly. Lovely large breakfast. Stocked "honor bar" for soda and beer. The lake is a walk down from the house where there are hammocks set up (there's not much of a "beach." Very peaceful and pleasant stay.

We had a wonderful retreat here... Mike and Carla were outstanding hosts and went out of their way to make our stay really terrific. The breakfasts were delicious and The place exquisitely clean with all the comforts of home. Lago de Apoyo is a secret jewel in Nicaragua's box of treasures. This was our second time to the lake...pristine jungle and lovely water called us back...set in a natural magical crater...I am sure we'll be back to la orquidea and we have been telling everyone we know about this place....so make your reservations soon before it is booked up!

While traveling through Central Amerika we intended to stay one night in this guesthouse on Laguna de Apoyo. after 7 nights we wish we could stay longer in this absolutely gorgeous spot. Some of the great things La Orquidea has to offer: - A cristaline crater lake offering one of the best swims you will ever have. - Great rooms with balconies and stunning views over the lake - Great fully equiped living room and kitchen. - Beautiful garden filled with wildlife, hammocks and even a badminton area - Delicious complimentary breakfasts with freshly baked muffins, french toast or pancakes - A great host that truly looks after all your needs. If you are in nicaragua and looking for a place to relax, I would definately reccomend a stay at the laguna and at La Orquidea in particular.
