A really well appointed lodge with spectacular views towards Spion Kop hill where one of the memorable British/Boer battles took place. The lodge rooms are perfect for the setting and very comfortable. The common dining room and bar exude colonial charm and the outside terraces abound with all manner of winged wild life which is compulsive watching. Food was rustically...

We spent two nights in this gorgeous place. Comfortable rooms, excellent food and service, even down to an early morning cup of tea bought to our room! Excellent tour with Raymond who bought the history of Spionkop to life. I would thoroughly recommend a visit. Thank you Raymond and Lynette.

We enjoyed an excellent afternoon safari with Alistair. The following morning an outstanding tour and background history lecture at the Spionkop battlefield with Raymond. Lynette and Raymond had dinner with us both nights and we so enjoyed their company. The rooms are spacious and quiet and the Lodge has a very relaxed atmosphere, nice pool and helpful staff.

Enjoyed our brief stay at Spionkop Lodge & Raymond's interesting tour of the battlefield. The staff are all very pleasant and the glorious location only marred by the Coca Cola umbrellas dotted around the beautifully tended grounds. It is a pity that the guests are seated at separate tables for meals - it would be interesting to have the opportunity...

Official Description (provided by the hotel)
Surrounded by low hills that slope up to the towering peaks of the Drakensberg and Free State Mountains. Spion Kop Lodge is the ideal place from where to explore the battlefields, set on an echo farm in Kwazulu-Natal. General Buller’s headquarters during the relief of the Ladysmith campaign, Mount Alice, is located on the farm. The beautifully restored, 8 bedroomed colonial-style farmhouse, is set in tranquil, secure grounds with superb views. Added to this there are two cottages, offering self-catering accommodation in an out-of-Africa setting. There is a library with an excellent collection of historical books, a dining room, cozy pub and a swimming pool. The owner and registered guide, Raymond Heron (F.R.G.S), guides guests to the many historic Battlefield sites, as does his son Alastair. We have 250 different bird species, hiking on the property and Sunset Boat Cruises and horse riding amongst the rhino, giraffe and various other animals. "Arrive as guests, leave as friends." ... more   less
