We stayed at the Sportsman for two nights during a walking trip in December. As it was dark from 4.30 everyday, we had plenty of time to spend in the pub and we were looked after really well. The food was great, there was a good selection of real ales and other drinks and the staff were very friendly. The...

My friend and I had lunch here after a lovely walk in the area of Hayfield. As we both have limited appetites we decided that we would have a starter each and share the bowl of home made chips. I chose chicken liver parfait which was delicious and my friend had the pumpkin and ginger home made soup which also...

Visited early doors one Friday for a meal. You can't find fault with the staff here, really friendly, great service and nothing too much trouble. They don't have a children's menu but there was a table with kids on close to ours and the server went out of her way to make sure that one of the kids didn't order...

Ate here two nights on the trot. Excellent meals on both occasions. Highly recommended dishes are the goats cheese starter and pan fried pork stroganoff. Excellent choice of desserts.(although we couldn't manage a pudding!) Range of beers and wines reasonably priced. Friendly, attentive and genuine staff. We will definitely return when in the area.

We called in for a quick drink on the way back from walking on the Kinder Scout plateau. We were warmly welcomed as was Otto, the dog. We ordered some beers and headed for the pleasant beer garden to the rear. The Thwaites beers were spot on and exactly what was needed on a hot day. Although we didn't order...

Group of 10 Celebrating Birthday. Excellent Sunday Roast with local produce. Reasonably priced. Great range of specials. Food lovely and hot with a nice selection of vegetables severed separately. Large range of desserts inc homemade Ricepudding, lovely and warming after a brisk walk on the nearby Kinder Scout. Chef came out to every table to check everything was ok. Nice...

Popped in this pub on the way back from Hayfield to the campsite. So glad we did. The pub was quiet in the early evening when we arrived, the bar staff were very friendly and helpful. Even came to the table to take your food order, which is unusual for a pub. The food was superb, home cooked and delicious....

The inn is on the Kinder Road outside Hayfield and the first one you pass if you come down from Kinder Scout using William Clough or the Reservoir. This makes it a welcome sight at any time? The extra is the welcome you get and the food they serve we must have tried everything on the menu except the burgers...
