Detailed Reviews
Nothing fancy but super chill and has all u need. Nice place just far enough away from the noises bars and close minute walk to the ocean. Great easy going staff. I stayed on the upper floor that has hammocks. Good AC and wifi along with a nice breakfast every morning.

This place was the cheapest we could find. We weren't disappointed. There was no pool which would have been nice and no place would let us pay to use their facilities but there's a huge ocean waiting to cool you off. They have parking which is important to us. A private room with bath was $20 a night. It had 2 full size beds, so we split it 3 ways. This made it cheaper than staying in their dorm. It was easy to just spend an extra day here... And then another...

Very conveniently located down the driveway right next to the bus stop/bus transfers office. Look for the sign.
A 2 minute walk into Tunco Town and a one minute walk down a private road to the beach. Better still, there's two awesome restaurants on the way to town (Soya for beautiful salads and smoothies and Take a Wok for delicious stir-fries. Both expensive but both excellent).
Our double room upstairs was clean and comfortable. The fan was enough for us at night and we didn't need the aircon. The hammocks are really comfy, the kitchen is basic but has everything that you need. No brekkie but free coffee.
There's no bar (not a party hostel) but there is an adequate supply of drinking holes around!
Generally a quiet place but neighbours are close, so, as with all hostels, earplugs are a worthy investment even if you don't use them.
Javier and Juanita are really friendly and helpful. We even got towels when we asked :)
Wifi worked really well.
Perfect place to base yourself for a few nights or a few weeks.

This is a very laid back setting as the name suggests. We were able to set up an airport pick up by the owners which was great so started out on the right foot. When we got there however we just had to sign a very old book and were given keys by a woman who we never saw again.
We stayed for 3 nights and our rooms or bathrooms weren't cleaned once which wasn't good enough (especially when you have to put toilet paper in the bins). After a shower, the bathroom floor was soaking and we were nearly flooded after our 3 days. Rooms were extremely hot with really slow weak fans and the wifi was patchy. Not the best experience. But very close to beach.

We apologize for your inconvenience and we are taking all your points to consideration, we are changing all our fans to better ones and remaning our staff to ask every day to our guests if they need anything, unfortunately with the internet is only one company providing that service and ones in a while we have issues, and our hostel is really close to the beach and gets warm, nothing we can do about it. We appreciate your letter and wish a great trip, hoping to have the chance to provide you with a better experience next time.

Great, clean comfortable hostal with 5 private rooms + 1 dorm. Rooms have A/C or fan option. Really reasonably priced, upper rooms are nice with private bath. Comfy hammocks on the second floor, a communal kitchen, and literally a stone's throw away from the beach and 3 great surf spots (la bocana, la bocanita, and Sunzal). 2 minute walk into Tunco and close to everything but perfect location since it's quiet once you're back and ready to sleep. The owner, Javier, can give transport to/from Tunco from airport, as well as gives surf tours. Great hostal, definitely stay!

I spent almost 5 months in this lovely hostel. I could write an article why I loved it that much, but I will tell you just the most important things:
- It is just 1min walk from La Bocana. So you can have your free good morning coffee while checking the waves.
- There is free coffee and water!
- The outdoor kitchen is one of the best in Tunco (there is an oven! and a freezer!)
- The stuff is super nice. Thank you Mirian, Juanita, Nelson and Lionel!
- It's cozy, you have upstairs 3, downstairs 2 hammocks and a small 'lounge' with deck chairs.
- You have a 'garden', with small palmtrees!
- It is no partyhostel, it is a surfhostel! There are plenty of solotravelers who are surfers. So you can find easily surfcompany and friends for having a few beers :-)

I stayed in a private room with a bathroom and really liked it. Super clean, spacious and well furnished. Juanita keeps the place super clean and the communal table is a good place to meet people and to socialise. Close to the beach and a really nice atmosphere.

really great, place! I stayed there for months. Clean, friendly, welcoming, and just a few steps away from the beach! It's on a small quiet street that is protected 24/7 by security, so it's very safe and secure.
Java, Sarah, and Juanita are all amazing people, stay with them at layback!

I stayed at Layback Hostel for 1 week.
This place was suggested by a friend and it turned out to be exactly what we were looking for. At the price of $20 a private room you can't go wrong. The private rooms also have 2 beds so you can share the room with a friend and not have to share the bed.
In saying that the dorms at only $7 a night with only 6 beds and lots of space its also a great option.
When I look for a hostel I look for the following;
- not a party hostel
- laid back
- clean
- kitchen
- wifi
- good location
and Lay Back Hostel has all of these things.
My only complaint was the our room had a slight musty smell on the really hot days which i believe was coming from the moistness between the walls from the building next door possibly? Anyway it shouldn't affect your stay ask for a room upstairs they had no smell.
