Food is great - a combination of rice which Asians like myself would need, healthy varieties of green salads, fish, tofu, breads etc., which will make you full.
At night, you get an easy access to their onsen bath with free unlimited ice cream and soba.
Finally, you have nothing to worry with your laundry as it's free of charge.
Really good hotel for young couples or single people.
This inn is also smack in the middle of akihabara and ameyokocho, as well as within close vicinity to the metro and JR lines.
Would return for sure!
Checking in was easy, even though reception did not speak much english, since I booked through a hotel website and confirmed before hand that I would be arriving late at night. Be sure to confirm with them if you are arriving close to midnight as they might give your room out since they also do onsen with overnight stay packages. There is no direct website to the hotel so it is a bit hard if you need to get a quick answer from them but you can call them.
The hotel is off the main shopping street and you are surrounded by food. There is a discount supermarket next to the hotel as well.
I felt very safe walking around at night and there is still a lot to see late into the night. You can walk to the Ueno park and see the cherry blossoms. It is a bit of a walk but there are a lot of shops in between to distract you.
The room I was given was the traditional one. It was small and simple but enough for one person and a large piece of luggage to leave open plus a smaller bag. Bathroom is very small and clean. Even though everything looked smaller than normal it was a well thought out room with space to move around. The hot spring is fantastic after a long day out and they even provide free laundry and a coin operated dryer. There is also free wi-fi in the room.
I do have to add that if you are thinking of going up to use the hot spring that they do not allow people with tattoos to share the space with others. Also, please respect the other guests who would like some peace and quiet and keep the talking volume down. Everyone has paid to use the hot spring and they deserve to enjoy their experience.
If you are an independent traveller this is a great place to stay. If you do require some assistance, the language barrier may be a problem. They do try their best to help but sometimes it is hard to get your point across if you do not speak Japanese.
Overall, I absolutely loved staying here and would definitely come back again or would be happy to try the other Dormy Inns in different areas in Tokyo. It offered me a clean and safe place to rest at a very good value.
It is close to Akihabara Electric Town, for those who are into Manga, cosplay, Maid Cafes, gaming etc, or if you just want to walk around and drink in the sights. It basks in neon at night and there are places to eat.
The train stations are also close. We arrived from Australia at Narito airport in the evening and activated our 5 day flexible Japan Rail (JR) pass to catch the Narita Express from the airport to Tokyo station. At Tokyo Station, we transferred to the Yamanote line, and Akihabara is only a couple of stops away. The internet is a useful tool, and you can work out platform numbers and directions in advance. Train signage is also in English and announcements are made in English too, and of course they are clean and quiet. The JR staff at the airport speak English and will help you plot a route to your hotel when you trade in your voucher for your JR pass.
The trick is finding your way off the Akihabara platform onto the street at a point where you can get to the hotel. Having done it once, it's easy, but the first time, at night after a long flight, with luggage, it was a little challenging. The Dormy Inn is 9 stories high with a large blue neon sign, but you can barely make it out from the station. Make sure you look for the down exit off the platform with signs to Akihabara Electric Town - don't do as we did and follow everyone else who seemed to be going up. A lovely young random Japanese girl with Googlemaps on her phone offered to show us the way without us even asking. The Japanese people are very polite and helpful.
The reception staff at the Dormy Inn speak English and are ever helpful.
The room was small, but manageable. We had a twin which was slightly larger than a double room. The room came with a flatscreen TV, fridge, electric jug, toiletries, electronic safe, free wifi, hair dryer, and air conditioning/ heating. We had a tiny balcony overlooking the street. The toilet has controls! The shower was quite roomy with good controls.
Coffee/tea/hot chocolate are available 24/7 in the dining room. There are free ramen noodles in the dining room after 9:30pm, which made for our meal on the first night.
The rooms come with pyjamas and slippers and you are encouraged to wear them around the hotel (eg, down for breakfast or for the evening ramen).
There is a roof top onsen (hot bath) - separate for men and women, no clothes, no tattoos. There are free washing machines with free washing powder, but you pay for the clothes dryers. Ironing boards are also available. They have a hotel laundry service too.
Our hotel package did not include breakfast, but you could buy it separately for 600yen - a choice of western or Japanese set menu, with yoghurt, cereal, juice and fruit too, which we did on the frost morning.
For westerners like us, this was a terrific hotel.
My verdict ? Very good value for your buck and convenient. Thanks to the TA community's advice, we took the Ginza line n stopped at the Suehirocho's stop, an easy 2 min walk to the hotel. How do you get to Ginza line?
Tip 1 : You can catch it at Shimbashi, a major exchange .
Tip 2 : Download an easy- to- read map of the different train lines before you leave or take a screenshot n store in your hp before you leave for tokyo. I got mine at tokyopocketguide.com
Tip 3 : Many people recommend taking the Ginza line to suehirocho but I feel you don't really need to get out of your way to do it. Just take JR line n stop at Akihabara station, once you r out, ask for direction of yodobashi, the electronic mall. With Yodobashi on your right, n the train tracks on your left, you walk right down the street-it's level road n easy to push your bag- for about 8 mins till you come to a junction below the train tracks, turn left, pass a medium sized discount supermarket that is located under the train tracks n you'll see the hotel.
Tip 4 - we found JR Akihabara station extremely useful to get to many places n to change lines.
This Dormy Inn is recently renovated in the middle part of the year. The onsen is really gorgeous in design- the star is the outdoor onsen - very nice n hot.
Tip 5 : If this is the first time you stay at an onsen hotel, you must try. No excuse for not trying. It's good for warming your body, n helps you sleep better at night. just bathe, and dip in slowly, legs first, then arms. try the outdoor onsen. Sit in the water n watch Japanese tv. The next morning after you get up, just brush your teeth n take your towels up to the onsen. Easy peasy. The onsen was under-used throughout my 2 day stay there.
Tip 5 - how to get to haneda international airport - although there is a bus stop in front of Yodobashi to catch the limousine bus, the bus is not frequent - costs 930yen. the easiest way is to get to Akihabara station, get to Hamamatsucho station which is like 3 stops away (160 yen) , then take the escalator up to the floor above to catch the rapid monorail to the Haneda international Terminal (490 yen) - so easy n in a jiffy (total about 40 min max)
Tip 6 - the staff at the hotel cannot speak much English- I suggest you do your preparation n research n don't expect much. then you'll be fine.
Tip 7 - although the room rates do not include breakfast the hotel provides breakfast - choice of western or japanese breakfast (of coz the gap is better) - at an affordable 600 yen. quite affordable- you should take breakfast n at least hv something to power your day until lunch (Tip - take the Hibiya line to Tsukiji to hv lunch !)
Tip 8 - finally choice of room - twin room for 2 people
Outside of this false advertising, the location is great for tourists, lots of public transportation nearby. Lots of convenience stores and restaurants nearby. The staff do not speak much English, but they were very friendly. The room is on the small size, but manageable. Everything worked, but awkward lighting that is very difficult to understand and work with remote controls. Small kitchen area. I liked the free laundry machines (you pay for the dryer).
Good value hotel. If they had the onsen, as advertised, I would have given 5 green dots. I really felt cheated, and wouldn't have stayed there otherwise.
The hotel is impeccably clean. The rooms a little bit larger than the typical Salaryman hotel, and the Onsen in the hotel makes for a great relaxation after a hard day's work.
