This urban ryokan is in a quiet (yet vibrant and fun) neighborhood and was also constructed to provide peace and quiet to those staying there. Our room was completely silent from any noise from other guests or people/traffic outside. The onsen was well appointed: both men's and women's area had a large indoor pool and a smaller outdoor pool. The women's had a steam sauna with an aroma mist, and the men's had a dry sauna. Towels and amenities are in the onsen so didn't have to bring your room towel. Perhaps the ryokan was not as busy while were there, but I never encountered more than a few people in the onsen at any time, which was wonderful. The yukata were comfortable, as were the beds. Our room was not the smallest, and we appreciated having a door that separated the sleeping area from the bathing/toilet/entryway area. We had a breakfast and a dinner at the restaurant, and, while the food was sophisticated and well-prepared, it wasn't particularly inspiring. The seasoning was very subtle, to the point of being rather forgettable. Perhaps we are unfairly comparing it to Kyoto's kaiseki cuisine, which is always stunning.

This hotel is a newer hotel and the minute you step inside, you know that you are in Japan. The property is very clean and very authentic. The location is not great as it is basically located in a residential area of Tokyo, definitely a car ride to anywhere you will want to go. The breakfast is a very traditional Japanese breakfast. The rooms are extremely small, not really any room to even fully open up your suitcase in the room. The room is very clean, but way too small. the spa area is nice, but also very small. It is nice that they have hot spring tubs in the spa, but that is pretty much it. No big lobby, and no air conditioning in the hallways off the hotel. The staff were not very helpful and their English was not great. Overall, a very average hotel in a residential neighborhood of Tokyo.

Wow! I can’t express how wonderful this place is. The interior design is impeccable, the onsen is so clean and relaxing, but the standout was the service. Every single staff member was so warm and welcoming. They all made sure we were comfortable. Particularly, Ikki who worked the front desk was so kind. He helped me navigate the very complicated train system, and was so patient with all my questions. He even printed me a map to ensure I didn’t get lost. Ikki went above and beyond! Thank you all!

A beautiful, lovely, comfortable, relaxing stay! We stayed here our last night in Tokyo after two weeks of travel, and it was the perfect way to end the trip. The staff were friendly, welcoming, and helpful. The Japanese breakfast was incredible. The rooms were stylish and the beds were comfortable. And the onsen was so relaxing, complete with popsicles after!
It is also adjacent to a neighborhood with really cute shops and restaurants, accessible via pedestrian path, and the hotel is very convenient to a train station.

Wonderful place to stay in Tokyo. The rooms are gorgeous and the Onsen is amazing. We loved it. The area around is lots of fun with lots of fun places to shop, eat and drink. An excellent find in Tokyo.

Conveniently located in a lovely quiet neighborhood. 1-2 min walk to the train station. Hotel is new and even prettier than the photos. We had the duplex room and it is one of the biggest rooms I have stayed in Tokyo. The main attraction is definitely the onsite onsen from Hakone. The reception can speak good English.

An oasis of calm and tranquility in a traditional Japanese setting. Like all ryokan, Yuen Bettei Daita provided considerate little touches, like an ice cream bar outside the baths, bedtime ochazuke (rice soup) suffice in your room. The design is beautiful, the staff are professional.
Everything was perfect, except the behavior of some of the guests who did not know how to behave in the onsen.

A few tips on bathing like a local:
1. Do not vape in the public spaces. It smells. Vaping is the same as smoking to us non-smokers.
2. An onsen is a shared bath. It is not going into a pool where you just wet your body and go right in. You should completely wash yourself first. This means taking a few minutes at the shower stalls and using soap and a wash cloth.
3. The towel bins are not just for decoration, use them for your used towels and don’t just leave wet towels wherever they land. There is no one to pick them up for you (and really it’s just rude to expect that someone would!).
4. Water is provided for a refreshment after and not during your bath. Don’t bring water bottles out cups and especially don’t leave them lying around.
5. No photos, no mobile phones. This is a bath. Taking photos where people are naked is considered a criminal offense.
The location initially seems out in the middle of nowhere but the Shimo Kitazawa subway stop area is pretty lovely with lots of shops and restaurants and subways take you directly to Shibuya and Shinjuku so it’s convenient for getting around.

My husband and I LOVED our stay at Yuen Bettai Daita. The ryokan experience is always special, and this one especially so. The rooms are thoughtfully appointed and calming, complete with comfy yukata; the onsen is divine; the breakfast and other foods (including a nighttime pudding on offer) are wonderfully yummy. We also enjoyed being just a little bit out of the major tourist areas of Tokyo--you're just 15 minutes from Shinjuku, for instance--and also able to stroll to some hip spots. You won't find better service or value in Tokyo! Enjoy!

It’s a sanctuary in the midst of Tokyo‘s city craze. I arrived at the hotel after a long flight and ride from the airport, and immediately could regain my energies for the remaining duration of my stay. Don’t miss the Onsen and book ahead a massage at the Sojyu Spa - heavenly experience which saved my legs with super professional and friendly staff. Thank you Molly.

We really enjoyed our stay here. It was nice to be outside the super busy areas of Tokyo for our second half of our stay in Tokyo and be in more of a neighborhood. The area is very very cute, though there are more businesses centered around nearby Shimokitazawa. The hotel is very nice, the rooms are slightly small but it was fine. If you're into onsen then the onsite onsen facility included in your stay more than makes up for this. Steam/sauna depending on if you're on the male or female side, and two warm pools. The decor is simple, modern, traditional. Stylish but nothing crazy.
