Detailed Reviews
This was our 4th time to stay at the Dormy Inn Express (Asakusa). This hotel is our 'home away from home' in Tokyo and we always feel very comfortable here with the rooms and staff. We always have the same high floor River View balcony room with views across the water to SkyTree and the Asahi 'golden turd'. I guess it's classified as only a 3star business hotel but it's clean and the facilities for foreign travellers are great. The decor of our room is probably late 1990s - and the room by Tokyo standards is larger than average - almost spacious. If you want a huge, sparkling 4/5star hotel with all the 'bells and whistles' this is not it. Free washing machines (x3), gas dryers, great ¥1200 breakfast, complimentary evening Ramen, complimentary bath, foot spa, massage chairs on 10th floor with views, complimentary ice-cream, complimentary Yakult, genuine, friendly and helpful English speaking staff, luggage storage and forwarding, excellent location and very close to convenience store, river cruises and the Metro.

Just stayed at the Dormy Inn Express in Asakusa. Location and views from the river side of the hotel are fabulous! Room was largish (by Japan standards) with a balcony overlooking the river and great views of SkyTree and the Kirin golden turd. Staff were all very friendly and helpful. Location was very close to Sensoji, cruises, restaurants and only 60metres to the Ginza subway entrance.

The Dormy Inn Express, in Asakusa, was the most amazing way to start our trip in Japan! The three nights we spent there were beautiful. The room was nice and quiet, and we had a view across the river that was unmatched.
Member of the staff was so kind and so helpful, that it really warmed our hearts. The breakfast every morning was wonderful and traditional.
The location could not have been better. Being right on the river was fantastic. And being just a couple minutes away from the subway entrance was so convenient. In addition, we were so close to Sen Sojii Temple, and everything around it, that it just blew our minds!
Thank you!

My partner and I stayed here towards the end of our second trip in Japan. We were confident it would be at least passable, because that had been our experience at every other hotel in Japan, including the excellent Dormy Inn in Kanazawa.
We were wrong, from the beginning the experience was bad, there are very strict rules, including returning your hotel key before going out for the night, then having to retrieve it from the concierge upon returning, strict rules for female guests, including a very narrow window for females to use the onsen, which offended my partner.
The other hotel guests were extremely rude and clearly were offended at having to share the lift with my girlfriend.
Then the room was dirty and rundown.
We went to dinner, considered our options and booked a different place. We didn’t even spend one night there.

DORMY INN GLOBAL CABIN ASAKUSA
Dormy Inn Asakusa is a hotel located along the Sumida River where you can stay at a reasonable price with a great view.
From the rooftop public bath on the 10th floor and the footbath, you can enjoy a memorable view of Tokyo such as the Tokyo Sky Tree on the opposite bank.
Although the building itself is old, it is an attractive hotel with a breakfast that we are proud of, so please use it as a reference when you come to Asakusa for sightseeing.

We've been staying at Dormy Inn's for the last few trips to Japan and enjoy the food and amenities. This Dormy inn is an Express - which I didn't understand at first, but I think to mean that their breakfast is odd in that you have to preselect the day before whether you'd like Western or Japanese breakfast. Western breakfast comes with a sandwich and corn soup or eggs, and you can supplement it with fruit, salad, or other Japanese foods that are placed in the middle of the restaurant. It is a very small restaurant - fills up very quickly!
Location is excellent - within a five minute walk of the Asakusa station and within sight distance of the Asakusa TOBU (to Nikko) railway. Lots of shops in the area, great eating places, and great view of the Tokyo Skytree and Sumida river if you have that back view of the hotel.
Room is typically small, with a tiny desk, no closet (only some hangers) and no where to really store your luggage. Bed was comfortable and clean as was the bathroom. Sink was odd - it was like brushing your teeth above a kitchen stainless sink! They push that as an amenity - that the room has a small kitchen! It has a refrigerator too. The room, while clean was a bit worn down with nicks in the paint and the carpet very worn. Bathroom is very small with a high step in tub that doubles as a small bathtub. If you are elderly, request an accessible room as stepping into the bathtub can be a little dangerous for someone who is older since it is a fairly high sided tub.
An onsen at the top floor was small, but a nice amenity. And they also provide free ramen at night from 9:30-11 pm. If you get there early, you won't be able to check in early - come back at 3 pm as they tell you. You may leave your luggage in the lobby, they will cover it with a netting and it will be safe.

The room was compact but clean. We paid the extra for a room with a view of the river – well worth it! We even had a tiny balcony and the view from it at night was sensational.
The hotel is a little old but the added extras really enhance the experience; stuff like hot water bottles at night, free massage (20 mins) for each guest, and an amazing foot spa with views over the river. There were also fancy shampoos and conditioners available for use as well.
European or Japanese style breakfasts each morning (get the Japanese one!) and a couple of nights per week you can get free ramen in the hotel – it’s delicious and well worth it!
Bathroom like most in Japan was small, but shower was warm and powerful. And those heated toilet seats...!
The front desk were very courteous and helpful, and stored our luggage prior to our departure.
I would highly recommend renting a pocket wifi device for your trip – having google maps was invaluable, as it’s difficult to find wifi hotspots in Japan generally, when you’re out and about. Would recommend using Japan Wireless too – everything worked well for us. There was free wifi in the hotel but it was sometimes intermittent.
There is a department store across from the hotel with a really good food court on the ground floor, and an unbelievably good restaurant a few doors down from the hotel – their speciality was freshwater eel and it was amazing.
In the general area is an English ale bar called Campion Ale – worth a stroll to as the beers are relatively cheap (for Tokyo) and pretty tasty. Right beside it is an AMAZING okonomiyaki restaurant called Sometaro – check out the reviews on Tripadvisor – you get to make your own on a massive hot plate…lots of fun!
Overall, I’d highly recommend staying at this hotel for your trip to Tokyo. Get out an explore Asakusa and the river – it’s really beautiful.

Accessing from the Narita airport is easy, train to Uneo Station then change trains and subway to Asakusa Station. Short walk to the hotel. Once mastered the train system is brilliant. The hotel staff speak English. The room is clean but small , typical of Japan but the cost is reasonable. The breakfast is either Japanese or Western, both good. Trip into Tokyo can be made direct via the subway from Asakusa (20 mins) or if you have a Japan Rail Pass, subway to Ueno then JR rail pass into Tokyo. Bullet train also runs from Uneo. Also in easy access via foot is the Sensuji Temple and markets, well worth a visit. Great location, great hotel, highly recommended. Re the JR rail pass, get one if you are staying longer than a few days, worth every cent .

I just returned from an 8 night stay at the Dormy Inn Asakusa. We were on the 6th floor with a view of the river and the new Tokyo Skytree. The Skytree is particularly beautiful at night when it's lit with various colors. The hotel staff were all very friendly and extremely courteous--but that's what you can usually expect in Japan. Their English was decent enough though I tried using my Japanese as often as possible. Breakfast is amazing. You have a choice of a western and Japanese style breakfast. I recommend the Japanese style which consisted of rice, soup, fish, pickled vegetables, and 3 other side dishes. Quite filling. But that's not all--there is also a buffet that had cereal, a side dish, fruit, natto (fermented soy beans), and yogurt. Coffee, juice, tea and milk are also available. So we got a good start to our day of touring and sightseeing. The location is excellent. It's across from the Matsuya Department store that has an amazing basement food court, about 5 minutes from Sensoji Temple, 2 minutes from the Ginza Line station, 3 minutes from the Asakusa Line, and there are also other trains in the Matsuya Dept. store. If you aren't familiar with Asakusa, it's a wonderful place to stay--lots of restaurants, culture, and shopping. To get to the hotel from the Narita airport we took the Keisei Sky Access express for 1240 yen. We didn't have to transfer. But be aware that the direct train isn't always available and you may have to transfer at Aoto. At Narita there is a Keisei ticket counter that will be able to tell you what's available. You can also take the Skyliner or Narita Express to Ueno and transfer to the Ginza line, but it's much more expensive. The hotel room is small, but many in Japan are like that unless you pay more. For 2 people it's a bit crowded, but we got used to it. The bathroom included a shower though it could use some updating--the shower is actually a hose connected to the faucet which was a bit awkward. There is also a sauna/spa up on the 10th floor. A free washing machine and dryer at 100 yen for 30 minutes is on the same floor. Internet is available via ethernet, and there is a LAN cable provided in the drawer. Our room was clean and toothbrushes, toothpaste, comb and shaver was provided. The hotel corridors/hallways could use some remodeling as it looks a bit drab. There is also a computer in the lobby with internet access though I did have a problem printing my boarding pass. The browser is in Japanese and I couldn't get it to print correctly so I just did it at the airport. I think for the price it's quite good especially because of the location, free breakfast, free noodles in the evening (starting around 9:30pm), and the courteous staff. To go to the airport we went to the Asakusa line station and took a direct express for 1240 yen. All in all it was a very pleasant stay. There were some similar hotels in Asakusa that I considered--Blue Wave Inn and Chisun Inn, but I selected the Dormy Inn because of its location.

We stayed at Dormy Inn Asakusa for four nights and we would definitely stay here again if we go back to Tokyo.
My husband and I enjoyed the Japanese breakfast (salmon, mackerel, vegetables, rice, tea, juice, coffee, soup, fruits, etc.), but you can also choose the continental breakfast. (Remember to tell the front desk the previous evening your choice of breakfast.) The ramen noodles (with mushrooms and other vegetables) they serve starting at 9:30 pm were delicious, too.
We loved the onsen on the 10th floor, which has scheduled hours for men and women. I particularly enjoyed the outdoor foot bath, which was a little hot for me at the beginning but then became comfortable with the water temperature afterwards, since it was really cold when we were there the last week of March.
We used the laundry facilities on the 10th floor and truly appreciated the use of free laundry machine and free detergent, which was familiar to me (no wonder – the label said it’s manufactured by Costco). The electric dryer is 100 yen for 30 minutes, which I had to use for 60 minutes because the clothes were still damp. After 60 minutes, I switched to the gas dryer for the same price (20 minutes only), and it finally dried all my clothes.
We loved our room, although small by American standards, but we were comfortable, and were not claustrophobic. Even though it was cold outside, we didn’t set the thermostat at night because the room was more comfortable without the heat on. We didn’t have problems with any noise; in fact, we slept well every night (and we’re light sleepers) and hardly heard any noise from our next door neighbors.
The room has an ofuro bathtub (deep Japanese soaking tub), which we used for showering. The toilet has a heated seat (and that was so nice to sit on in the morning after waking up) and has all the buttons to use for personal hygiene. The shampoo, conditioner, and body soap all smelled so good. There are also hairbrushes and toothbrushes/toothpaste provided in the room in case you forget to bring yours.
The samue (Japanese clothes with top and trousers) and slippers provided are so comfortable. You’re actually encouraged to wear them in the hotel and not just in your room.
The location is perfect for us. We took the Narita Express train to Asakusa (arrived within 50 minutes), and the station is only a five-minute walking distance to the hotel. There is another station diagonally across from the hotel, next to the Matsuya department store, and we went there to catch the subway to different parts of Tokyo. Matsuya, by the way, like any other department stores in Japan, has a basement where you can get Japanese food for lunch or dinner at reasonable prices, which are marked down right before closing time (7:30 pm).
Senso-ji Temple and Nakamise-dori (a great place to shop for all kinds of Japanese souvenirs) are right on the other side of Matsuya. Kappabashi-dori (the street lined with stores specializing in kitchen supplies such as those beautiful ceramic Japanese dishes of all sizes and shapes) is a few blocks away, also within walking distance, and you’ll pass by beautiful old Japanese houses. Don’t worry about getting lost – everyone will try to help you even if you don’t speak the language. We felt very safe walking in the neighborhood of Asakusa (and in the entire Tokyo).
There are also rickshaw operators in the town (for quite a price), but we didn’t try them. The Sumida River is behind the hotel, and you can see the Tokyo Sky Tree (tallest tower in the world) and the golden Asahi beer flame. It’s great to take a picture of sunrise from the room balcony, and the sun was rising from behind the Tokyo Sky Tree.
I would definitely recommend Dormy Inn to anyone who wishes to feel like you’re in old Tokyo and yet be close to everything modern.
