Only concern is the thinness of the walls between rooms. One can hear any conversation from the direct neighbors, which can get really an issue with baby crying during the night... which happened to us. All the other guests were either from Europe or from North America.
The ryokan is located about 10-15 minutes' walk from Ueno station, but there is a little bus that takes you from right next to the ryokan to the station in about 3 minutes, every 10 minutes, for just 100 yen. The bus is only going to Ueno - to get back you have to walk.
We only used the ryokan as a base. You can have breakfast there but we never did. Our room was clean, had its own bathroom, and was in japanese style (tatami mats, futon beds, etc). Great fun to experience a taste of Japan.
There's a small lounge downstairs with numerous books on Japan (in English) and also 2 computers with free internet for the compulsory mails back home.
Would recommend to budget travellers, and would stay there again!
Ryokan is quite simple and a bit like staying with family. Friendly owner speaks some English and elderly grandmother always welcoming each evening.
Room on ground floor by entrance but quiet enough. Futon on tatami floor was more comfortable than it looked. A/C and small TV (Japanese channels only) My only complaint was the toilet and shower upstairs - stairs are steep and could be a problem for some. Yukata provided and small lounge area in front with hot water and free tea and coffee plus lots of tourist info.
Really liked this quiet neighbourhood and its a world away from the more frenetic areas like Shinjuku. But good access to main Ueno station and Nezo subway - see the ryokan website for Youtube directions which I found helpful.
No breakfast but plenty of eating options nearby and convenience store across the road.
Tip - go to the public bathhouse sento for a great soak in hot pool its only 5 mins walk away.
Friendly and helpful proprietors in a small guest house/ryokan.
The room was a decent size for a capital city with room for two futons, a wardrobe, shelving and a small eating area. Beautiful crisp white linen changed daily! The aroma of the tatami mats was just lovely. Air conditioning was supplied and much appreciated.
The shared sink for teeth brushing and dishes etc was a bit unusual but worked well as the guests all shared as we wandered around in our provided yukata. The shower room although old was very clean and had great water pressure. The ubiquitous electronic toilet was a challenge to the uninitiated and my only complaint is that with no window or much ventilation added to a carpeted floor the smell in there was a bit off putting.
There is a small shared lounge/table/computer area downstairs. Plus the bikes available for hire at a very reasonable daily rate are really fun and a great way to explore the area, particularly at night when the temperature was cooler.
The Ueno area we found to be perfect as a base with easy access via train at Ueno station 15 minutes walk away or subway at Nezo station 7-10 mins away.
The most amazing thing all of this for only ¥100 per night. What a steal!
In Japan they tend to put a fitted sheet/douvet cover over the bedding, so we weren't actually touching it, but just knowing how gross it was under that sheet was a huge turn off to me.
My allergies started acting up a couple hours after we checked in.
Also the walls were quite thin, so you wont really have any privacy, and if you like to stay up later you will be disturbing others.
We really wanted a ryokan experience, and this one seemed to be a decent price, but other than a japanese style room, it didn't really offer any of the other services that usually go along with staying in a ryokan. I'd say this is on par with a hostel/backpacker hotel.
Would not stay here again.
Easy 10 min walk from Ueno - trust me about this, we had the kids walking home after a full day out on the town and we always made it! Ueno park nearby is a great space to wander in. Heaps of food options if you head to Nezu, as well as local supermarkets etc.
Arriving in TOkyo airport you can catch the Kesei liner to Ueno and then walk to here (we did it along with our roll along bags no problem). We arrived early and they helpfully allowed us to checkin early (they were still making the beds!).
We will be back and we will stay here again!
PS quite thick futons here compared to other places we stayed so another good thing!
Access to the rooms upstairs is via a pretty steep set of stairs (if you have large luggage, you are in for a bit of a challenge).
I stayed in a single without bath on the 2nd floor so I can only comment on that experience. The room was adequate in terms of size and had a smallish LCD TV (which was pretty cool, even though it is strictly Japanese programming). There was also a booklet containing advice and a JR Rail timetable). There was a nice sized closet for hanging clothes. Outside, there was a large sink (seemed more suited to a restaurant kitchen) where one brushed their teeth and/or shaved.
There is a washer/dryer combo (washer is 300 yen, dryer free). There is no Japanese bath but a very roomy, western-style shower with shampoo and body wash pumps built into the wall. Just the opposite is true for the toilet though; it was a somewhat claustrophobic closet with a heated toilet seat that, given the bathroom's size, turned the room into a bit of a sauna (still can't figure out why one needs a heated seat in the summer, but whatever...).
As far as ambiance, the ryokan has none; it's strictly functional. Additionally, it is somewhat worn at the heel - renovation of all the common areas is clearly needed. Great room rates sometimes come at a cost...
I do have one issue regarding cleanliness. And it might have been me... but I'm not too sure of that but when I woke and had a chance to see the futon fully exposed, the sheeting seemed rather dirty (and not of the extended period of use kind, the not washed or not washed very well kind). I also observed that, when cleaning other rooms, the gentleman did not bring out sheeting from any of the rooms. Not changing the sheeting every day during an extended stay is one thing, offering anything other than a sparkling white bed set to newly arrived customers. is another.
If any others notice this, include it in the write-up as the owner needs to be called out on something like this if it is the case.
All in all, an adequate place (although I'm not sure I'd do an extended stay there personally speaking).
