I stayed at Ryokan Katsutaro twice in Jan 2011 and can fully recommend it. It was easy to find and only a 10min walk from Ueno station along a single road. The staff were very pleasant, the rooms were clean and comfortable. The accomodation is pretty standard ryokan and not set at a high level, but was more than you...

The first and best thing about this place is we booked it once we were already on holiday. We didn't really have the time to do much research or worry about things so we did the whole thing on email. Our flight arrived at Narita Airport at 6am and I optomistically put 9am as our check-in time. When we arrived...

Actually the worst I had during all my stay in Japan. But for one night stay it was ok. The positives are: it's only 15 minutes walk from Kaisei Ueno station, from where you have trains to Narita airport, free internet, free coffee and tea, cheap bikes to rent. Nevertheless, the place is a bit old, toilet is upstairs..(my room...

Family of 5 - 11 yr old twins and an 8 yr old - all in one room. Somehow it just worked! This is Japan and small spaces are common so this room was not that large but average. It was spotless and incredibly quiet so sleeping was easy. We had our own bathroom but also used the common one...

My wife and i spent 2 weeks in this ryokan, we had a typical japanese style room with futons and tatamis, it was very comfortable. The ryokan is located in a quiet place, which is good because you can take a rest after spending the whole day in the noisy Tokyo. There's a free internet access with 2 computers and...

We stayed 5 nights and had a great time... - two tatami rooms divided by a sliding door made sleeping with small children easier (day & night!) - great access to Ueno Park, Ueno Zoo, National Childrens' Library, National Museum - nearby stations connecting to Tokyo train network, including Narita Airport (Keisei Line) - easy bus trip to Asakusa -...

We stayed here for a total of 8 nights (went to Kyoto in the middle) for a family holiday. We were met at the door by the mother who motioned to us to take off our shoes and put on some slippers which you take off when you enter your room, wearing slippers or bare feet on the tatami mats....

I travelled with 2 friends, 3 girls. It is a bit of walking from the Metro station. We arrived Tokyo at night, and it took us nearly 20 minutes to walk there because we were a bit tired and did not exactly know if we were on the correct way walking on the street at about 10pm. The room that...

We stayed at Katsutaro after spending 2 nights at Sawanoya Ryokan, which may be the reason for my high standards. Sawanoya was full on our 3rd night so we headed to Katsutaro and were really disappointed. First of all, you should go ahead and book a room at Sawanoya immediately, it is amazing and such a incredible deal. Katsitaro is...

My girlfriend and I stayed at Ryokan Katsutaro during part of our stay in Tokyo for about 10 days and it was definitely a good experience! Rooms were slightly old, but no worse than any other Ryokan and its surroundings are nice and quiet. The Ryokan is actually signposted on the local maps near Ueno Park so finding it is...

Staying in Ueno, Asakusa

Neighbourhood Profile
Ueno, Asakusa
Traces of the history and culture of the Edo (old Tokyo) era remain vividly in Ueno and Asakusa. Spacious Ueno Park is a great place to relax and visit a variety of different museums and galleries. At Ameyoko which starts in front of Ueno station, the grocery stores and clothing shops are crammed alongside fishmongers. It gets particularly busy at the end of the year, when many people go on shopping sprees. The town of Asakusa, developed around Sensoji temple, has many shops selling goods and clothing from old Japan, making it a great place for souvenir hunting. It's also known for various annual festivals, and the whole district gets involved with the huge Sanja Festival in May.
