The room is quite spacious, cleaning is made everyday, the shared bathroom offers a bathtube, and I couldn't hear much noise from inside the hotel or outside. It's possible to use the washing machine for a very decent price and the desk is open 24H.
However I had a hard time getting from Ueno station to the street this hotel was in, as I had two heavy suitcases and there were hardly any way to cross the huge road after the station. Eventually I took elevator B2/3 from the underground station.
But considering the prices in Tokyo, this hotel is a gem.
The man at the reception was friendly and helpful. location of the hotel is good too even on the first day we took so long time to find the hotel and another day we found the short way get to Ameyoko Market.
The price we got was not expensive maybe we booked so early
I love this hotel and will go back gain :)
Although the service staff did not speak English well, they were very enthusiastic to help us solve the problem.
Location: 5-7mins walk to Ueno JR Station. About 3 mins walk to Ueno Metro station
(these stations are connected anyways) Since the stations and the hotel are seperated by a busy-traffic road, it could be difficult for traveller with lots of luggages to attend to this hotel, as you need to go up on a bridge in order to cross the road. (But there is escalator attached to the bridge)
Room: I choose this shared-bathroom room (only share with 1 room). It's very clean and maybe I am lucky that I don't have problem "fighting" the washroom with my neighbor. I cannot open the window in my room as it is right next to the neighbor, which I wouldn't able to get a view anyways. There are TV, towels, cups, water boiler, slippers and self-control heater/air con in the room which save yourself (especially backpacker) to carry too much with you.
Service: Service is excellent! Very friendly staffs though their English are not as good as I expected. They actually remember me and my room number after the 1st day. One day it was raining and I returned with wet hair, the staff gave me a towel before giving me my room key, how attentive.
Free internet in the lobby and a lounge area with TV (CNN)
Surrounding: Lawson convinent store right next to the hotel. 1 min away there is a restaurant called "Pronto" which serve western style meals. Since it is a business area, there are lots of little restaurant for late night snacks and beer. It can be quiet at night but I still feel safe walking thru it. (this can be a problem for single female walking thru at night)
With the price I paid, I think I get the best service I can ever ask for.
Location of the hotel is good, it is in a quiet neighbourhood and yet within walking distance to major JR, Kesei and metro train station. Eating and shopping are cheaper in Ueno as it is more down market, there are a lot of cheap restaurants and shops selling souvenirs and sport wears in Ameyoko, a shopping bazaar nearby. If you need to shop at night, there is a Marui department store that opens till 9:30pm. Basically you can bargain and buy most of the your stuff in Ueno without going to Shinjuku or Ginza. There is a 24hr Lawson convenient store next door of the hotel, extremely convenient.
The Lawsons (convenience store) next door was also extremely useful. We ended up popping down very often to buy some snacks. Sheets were clean and changed everyday. We had the triple room and they provided us with double queen-sized beds and a blow up bed. My parents ended up sleeping on 1 and me on the other, while the blown up bed was used to put our coats. I also think there's a discount if you book from their website online. Do check it out. It was quite a bit cheaper too.
Location wise, the hotel being in Ueno is awesome. About a 10 minute walk to the station everyday and also maybe a 15 minute walk to Ameyokocho? I would recommend anybody to visit Ameyokocho on a saturday morning. It's pretty awesome and you get to be involved in the bustle of the morning. Extremely entertaining. We also managed to catch the sakuras blossoming in Ueno on our last day even though it was still early March. Gorgeous. Simply beautiful.
Oh! I don't remember seeing a restaurant in the hotel but there must be one since they provided breakfast for 840 Yen (Jap style). All in all, I would recommend this hotel for the budget conscious. Its a good hotel with an extremely good location.
Tip: Pls turn and come out of the JR station from the Hard Rock Cafe area. That's the main exit. It'll make walking to the hotel much easier with all your bags and stuff. Just a quick left, up the pedastrian crossings and straight down till you see the escalator leading downwards. The hotel provides the rest of the directions and a map. =)
