Detailed Reviews
Apologies, we should have posted this review some weeks ago. My family & I stayed in a family room at the Touganeya for 10 nights in October 2019. We can't recommend the hotel highly enough. The location is excellent, right next to both the JR and below ground train lines as well as multiple convenience stores, shops, restaurants, the Ameyoko market and beautiful Ueno park & zoo within walking distance. The hotel serves a Japanese breakfast but if you prefer a Western breakfast there is a Pronto cafe 1m walk away & a Doutor cafe 3m walk away. The family room was a good size and good value for 2 adults & 2 kids. The room was kept spotlessly clean by the cleaning staff. The reception staff were incredibly helpful, especially when we had to unexpectedly extend our stay due to a typhoon. In short, we think the Touganeya is an excellent hotel and will definitely stay there again when we return to Tokyo.

Dear our valued guests, We have got the greatest comment we can ever get from the beginning of the year. Thank you so much for giving us such a wonderful review ever. The rainy typhoon season is very unpredictable. Last year we had many deadly typhoons that have affected the transportation system. We are very happy we were able to help you during the typhoon. What we did are what we were supposed to do. Yet all of us are very happy to read your review that we were being helpful for your family. We can not wait to see your family again soon! Wishing you and your family a wonderful new year.

Just a few minutes walk from Ueno Station. Comfortable, clean double room. Bathroom with all the necessary amenities. Fridge. BBC on room TV but no other foreign channels. Electric kettle in the room, tea/coffee can be picked up at the reception.

Our second visit to the hotel last time was 8years ago, nothing has changed I think even some reception staff were there then. We had a 4night stay in twin room at beginning of trip to Japan then 3night stay at end in double room. Lots of space in twin room with sofa. Cleaning done daily with change and of towels and bottles of water. For Double room you can decide if you want housekeeping but room so small gave us a chance to leave things lying out of suitcases. Leave towels in bag on door handle and bin outside and they are changed and emptied it suited us fine can make own bed just not much space. All staff pleasant. In ideal location 3 minutes to Ueno station and shops and eating places. Very handy for Ueno park, zoo and museums

Dear Guest, Thank you very much for taking the time to write us a 5-star review! It is always gratifying to receive positive feedback from our guest. Besides, this is the first review we have got after the COVID-19 pandemic has happened. We are just so glad we got a chance to meet and accommodate our guests again. Thank you so much for choosing our hotel again. We are very happy to know that you liked our standard twin room. We are just sorry that we only got 1 standard twin room at our hotel. We would like to welcome you again at our hotel in your future travels.

We rented the big family room both times we stayed here.
Great staff. Nice rooms. A good elevator, too!
Very clean rooms.
You can even dry your laundry on the clotheslines on the rooftop!
Only oddity is that I bumped my head on the short doorways to the rooms. haha

Dear our valued guest, Thank you so much for choosing our hotel many times. We thank you for complimenting our staff, rooms and elevator. As you have mentioned, our building is designed by elder Japanese so the roof is very low and the heights are short. We feel very sorry for tall guests. You can now dry your clothes in your room. There is a telescopic wire clothesline in your room now! We are looking forward to seeing you again soon and please be careful from COVID-19!

The hotel is the standard small size you find in Tokyo. There is no view, but if you are wanting a budget hotel in the heart of Ueno, this is great value.
Very clean with friendly staff.
Microwave, vending machine and washing facilities. Mini fridge in the room.

Good location , only 3 mins walk to JR Ueno station . Room is clean and bed was comfortable. Yes it’s tiny but it’s Tokyo n you technically just need the room for sleeping and showering .
Last but not least , the room price is fairly reasonable. Highly recommended if you are looking for economical hotel with good standard .

Nice hotel, small room but clean and tidy, maybe a bit dated but certainly doesn't make the stay any less. Near Ueno station, close to the shopping and entertainment area. Friendly and helpful staff. We have had a pleasant stay.

I hope this review would help New travelers to Tokyo as well.
First when you arrived at Narita airport, I think that there are three usefull things you can do at the airport, 1, purchase the Train Ticket(s) to Ueno, which you can chose the fast train ($2400 yen/person - 40 minutes to Ueno) or slower comuter train (Limited Express) that stops at a dozen stops or more ($1000 yen for age 12 and up and $500 yen for kids). 2, Change as much money as you can to Yen, because there are a lot of places in Tokyo don't take credit cards. 3, You can purchase the one ($600 Y) or two($960 Y) days all you can ride Metro ticket and half price for kids and you only buy it at the airport.
When you get to Ueno station, look for direction to the Metro station and follow it, (There are two Metro lines (H and O) at this station), when you get to the Metro station, look for exit #2. If you have big luggage(s), before you get to exit #2, on you right hand side, there is an elevator going up, take this elevator up to the group level, then turn left and walk for 10 meters (30 feets), turn right and you will see a set of escarlators going up to the overpass, walk for 40 meters, you will see a small good noodle restaurant at your left good for breafast (opens until 8 pm - good price), you will see Lawson convinience store straight ahead, and turn right, you will see the Touganeya hotel.
For restaurants near by, just go back to the Metro station direction and look for the 0101 building, and go there. It is next to the Ameyoko market, and you will find a lot of small and cute restaurants there, but there only accept Yen and no credit card.
For this hotel, other reviews already stated most of the information, but one thing I find not being mentioned is the doors to the rooms are very low and if you are 6 feet or higher, you may hit you head going to your room. The two free to use computers in the lobby are very useful.
I booked the Triple non-smoking room through email to the hotel and unable to book it through Expedia or other internet sites. This room has three beds and windows and fit four of use. It has a 20" tv and a closet as well.
For water and snacks, just buy it at Lawson. They also have cheap buns for budget travellers.

Booked this hotel through Expedia as we had read some good reviews.
The hotel has a map for you to use from their web site which shows you the way to this hotel (which is off the main road) from Ueno Skyline station. Take your time and check the pictures and you will find your way easily to this hotel.
This is a compact hotel, the rooms are small but certainly adequate for what you need, unless you intend to stay in the room all day. There is a bathroom capsule, best way to describe it, but again has a very small bath, shower, lovely Japanese toilet, all the to litres that you would want, including tooth brush and razor.
There is free internet connection on every floor, two floors have vending machines dispensing drinks there is also a laundrette on the ground floor. Breakfast is not included in the price we paid which was £183.00 for 3 nights.
We arrived early in the morning as we had an overnight flight, on arrival at hotel we were able to leave our bags and go explore the area, although we have been to this area before.
It is difficult to find anything wrong with this hotel. Like everywhere in Japan people almost fall over themselves to help you, we wanted a couple of larger cups to have tea in and the staff brought them to us within mins.
The whole hotel is spotlessly clean and looks as though it has had very little use, but this hotel was full while we were there.
Another great thing about this hotel is that there are no slamming doors, as the mechanism is perfectly balance on the doors so as not to slam. Also we did not at any time hear any other guests or tv's.
This is a great little hotel at, for Tokyo, a very reasonable price, would defiantly recommend this hotel. It is close to the subway system and within walking distance of Ueno park where you will find Ueno Zoo ¥600 entry fee. You will find the Tokyo Pandas there.
Also plenty of eateries nearby.

Rasselas is correct - there is also no guarantee that hotel staff:
- monitor TripAdvisor for questions
- are able to provide accurate room availability information in this format (because that info is constantly changing)
You should always contact an accommodation directly (e.g. through that business's website) if you have a question that only the hotel can answer.
Best wishes on your trip - May is lovely in Japan!
