Detailed Reviews
Stayed 3 nights. Simple small Japanese room, futon on floor with attached bathroom. Old style and no frills but quiet and excellent value for Tokyo.
Great position in Asakusa walking distance to metro and lots of inexpensive places to eat.
Friendly staff despite minimal English. Stored my bag when I went to Nikko.

This is my second review for the hotel I experienced in Japan and hope it'll be more or less useful for you all.
I just visited japan last month and stayed at Tokyo for 5 days, 4 nights at Asakusa Ryokan Toukaisou which I think it's quite interesting to share my view here.
A) How to go
From Narita Airport, you can take Rapid Train to Ueno Station and change to Ginza Subway Line to Tawaramachi station at exit 3 and walk around 10 mins to arrive this ryokan. For tourist with backpack, small and medium size luggage, it should be fine cause you'll not get too tired from airport to hotel. However, if you have big luggage; 27 inches luggage as mine for example, you'll get some exhausted because you have to change train at Ueno Station that is quite big and Tawaramachi station exit 3 has neither elevator nor escalator, so you need to spend much energy to reach there.
B) Location
This hotel's surrounding is quite great. Even it's in alley, but there are many supermarkets nearby, Sanpei Supermarket, Seiyu (which is opened 24 hrs at basement of ROX department store) and Family Mart. So, you'll have no problem with starvelling :P
Moreover, this hotel is opposite to Sensouji Temple or known as Asakusa Temple for may people; the important landmark and tourist spot in Tokyo, that you can arrive in 5 mins from hotel by walk. So, we can enjoy scenario there with many reasonable price shopping and traditional dessert store. Quite convenience and pleasure.
There are also many restaurants there. mostly are Ramen shop from valued to premium price.
At evening time, this area is quite cozy. If you're peace lover, you'll love it. However, if you like light&sound, this area might not match your type.
C) Hotel
There are 2 types of rooms; dormitory with shared bathroom and private rooms with bathroom inside. Even, they're not big but very clean and neat.
Great point is staffs here can speak English very well and so helpful. They're willing to help and make you feel comfortable there. I give them 10 marks out of 10 for this point.
So, overall this hotel is quite good to stay and I recommend you to stay here if you have any chance to visit Tokyo.

Located down a somewhat quiet street just a couple minutes walk from the Asakusa (TX) station. Located right in downtown Asakusa; Sensoji temple and the Tokyo Skytree are all within walking and seeing distance from the main street. Close to the shopping district and there are dozens of restaurants to choose from.
Staff at the reception are friendly and can speak English. Rooms are Japanese style with tatami mat floor and and thick mattress. The bed and the pillows are equally comfortable. Rooms have air conditioning.
We had a double room with a private bathroom and shower room (shampoo and body wash included). This ryokan also provides yukatas (light cotton kimono worn in summer) for guests if they wish to wear one.
Our double room was slight more expensive at roughly 3000 yen, but it is well worth it.

Unfortunately, the location proved to be the hotel's best feature. Our room was coated in mold and smelled horrible. We could not sleep due to odor and allergic reactions to mild. We had to sleep in surgical masks. Not worth it, stay elsewhere

We stayed here twice and is planning to return again soon. All the staff are really helpful, cheerful and always very polite and obliging to all your enquiries or requests. Staying at this
ryokan is really pleasant and very convenient as a base to see other attractions. The ryokan is
clean and reasonably priced. Lots of eateries around this location and the beautiful Sensoji

Great hotel. We (my boyfriend and I) stayed there for two weeks and had a great time. The location, for the price, is ideal: Asakusa is a chill and charming neighborhood, more traditional than the rest of central Tokyo, full of shrines and temples (the most famous one being the stunning Senso-ji, which is within walking distance of the hotel). The hotel is also a 5 min walk from Tawaramachi station (Ginza Line), from where you can reach Shibuya in 30-40 min; and there's a lot of konbinis and small restaurants nearby.
The room we rented was a 2-person bedroom, including a private toilet and bathroom (shower and small bathtub). The bed was "Japanese-style" (i.e. a mattress directly on the floor); however, the mattress was a regular western one, so way more comfortable than a traditional Japanese futon, which was a relief to us. The room was indeed a bit small (though not by Tokyo standards) but it didn't bother us at all. The furniture was: coffee table with Japanese tea set, huge built-in cupboard, 2 person bed/mattress, mirror, small TV and TV stand. The only issue we encountered was humidity: the windows can only be cracked open because of the extreme closeness of opposite buildings, and as we went there in July (rain season), the humidity would remain in the room, whether the AC was on or not.
The staff was polite and friendly and spoke very good English. Room cleaning is done only on demand (if you never ask they stick a post-it on your door asking if you need some cleaning done), which was fine by us.
All in all, considering than this hotel is incredibly cheap, it's really a great catch!

I've already stayed in this place 3 times before this and I've always returned to spent at least few nights in there. Rates are good for Tokyo and staff is friendly and speaks also English. Location is quiet, and there are many convenient stores and one 24 h supermarket nearby. Rooms are clean and basic, each has air conditioning. During summer time some rooms might have a bit of humid odour, but I haven't find it too much disturbing.
The only "problem" might be, that ryokan is located in Asakusa which is quite faraway from most popular shopping and nightlife areas (like Shinjuku, Shibuya, Takadanobaba...), but Yamanote loop-line is located in Ueno just 2 stops from Tawaramachi station.

A wonderful stay! I stayed here in early January for 7 nights in the twin room. The essentials were there - clean toilet, hot water and tea cups (the staff will kindly give new refilled hot water for you when you ask), makeup table with mirror, small TV (although it doesn't have many channels, the TV's not the main issue as you're unlikely to use it anyway). The toilet is quite small but is very clean just like everywhere else in Japan. However, as the toilet room is quite small, it’s probably not suitable for larger/taller people as it will be too cramped and uncomfortable.
When my alarm broke just as I had arrived, the staff was very kind to lend me an alarm clock for free for the whole week which I was very grateful for. I loved how the room had its low table and tea set and cushions to kneel on to enjoy a late night meal - a perfect Japanese experience. The lighting was lovely in the room and you could switch the lights on and off to get the lighting you want.
The really great thing about the Ryokan was its location. Not only is it a short 5 minute walk to the Tawaramachi station that reaches Ueno in about 3 minutes and makes it easy to travel to various touristy locations (and also for reaching Narita Airport), there is one grocery/supermarket only 1-2 minute walk away with another larger supermarket below the department store right opposite the 1st grocery/supermarket. There is a 100 yen shop near the department store that's only a few minutes away from the Ryokan where we brought a chopping board and fruit knife. We brought really fresh and marvelously delicious fruits from the supermarkets and chopped them up for a snack in our room (a good way to keep healthy when many meals outside lack all the necessary anti-oxidants). The oranges, strawberries had such a brilliant intense flavour and were really cheap and the apples were one of the best apples I've eaten in my life! (I went in Winter but I am sure there's more delicious fruits from many different seasons too!) The milk was the best milk I've tasted (at least that’s how I felt) and I literally gulped down one liter of milk a day (all the different brands of milk that I tried tasted so OISHII!).
You can just store fresh fruits and milk or anything else from iceblocks/icecream to yoghurt in the fridge and just take it to enjoy it after a tiring day outside and it would end the day perfectly. There is unfortunately not a kitchen available to cook a meal, but for me, the fridge was definitely enough and so was the microwave to heat up a bento brought from those supermarkets. Go to the supermarkets after 8pm and they have discounts - many half price and 20% off as they try to get rid of any sushi or bento not sold that day. If you're not fussy, buy them and take them back and store them in the shared fridge and microwave them the next day and they still taste just the same and would make a healthy cheap and filling breakfast. Otherwise, the convenient store that’s on your way to Tawaramachi station could also provide you with a quick snack/breakfast.
The staffs are such wonderful people and speak fluent English and you can ask them to store valuables for you during the day. They also recommend good locations to eat in the area, providing you with a map. You can keep swapping for clean towels after use which is so much better than many places that charge you when you want to use a new clean towel. Drying washed clothes is also easy as it’s on a windy rooftop. This is a list of what I personally saw as the pros and cons of the Ryokan.
Pros –
Good location – easy to find using the map access guide provided by the Ryokan website
Good service/nice staff
Room cozy and makes you feel secure
The walls seem to be thick enough as I was not disturbed by any noise from next door knowing that the rooms on the floor had been fully booked
Useful fridge and microwave
Easy to dry clothes
Shops/ department store (though smaller than the ones in Shinjuku or Shibuya) close by to shop around
Tourist attractions can be reached by walking for approximately 15-20 minutes (kaminarimon) with kitchenware street just few minutes away by walking (kappabashi dori with its many food replicas is a must see! They make really neat souvenirs too!)
Cons –
Probably if there was a kitchen with cooking utensils/pots, it would have been better
The computer with its internet is rather old (so bring your own laptop and plug it to your room and it’ll be no problem!)
The Ryokan was definitely a very neat experience with a Japanese feel and I simply loved it, I would definitely come back here again…in fact, I am planning to come here again next year when I stay in Tokyo in year 2011!

My boyfriend and I recently stayed at this Ryokan. It is tucked away on a side street, about 10 minutes walk from some of the major touristic sights in Tokyo. It is much quieter than some of the other touristic areas such as Shibuya or Shinjuku, and therefore you get much better rest! We stayed in the double room for less than $55 a night, with private bath, tv, tea set, air conditioning, yukatas, and slippers. It was the perfect place for us. Oh, and when we left Tokyo, leaving our jackets accidently in the room, they mailed them out to us, in Spain, 2 days later. Incredible service.

Stayed for 8 nights in this simple, cheap and straightforward ryokan in the middle of Tokyo, primarily in the Asakusa district which is a great area to stay.
First of all, I have to highlight the insanely cheap price. Stayed here for 8 nights for less than 400 euro. Staying in a 10m2 room with a private bathroom, bath and shower in such a close proximity to the center of Tokyo is really wonderful.
The rooms were clean, nice staff with English-speaking and the ryokan is located in a quiet side street 5 minutes walking from Asakusa's main temple Sensoji.
The bathroom itself was tiny but again worth it to have your own bathroom instead of a shared bathroom. And the ryokan experience (sleeping on a mattress on a tatami mat) is not a problem for me at all and actually quite comfortable).
If you are a low budget solo traveler, this is the place to stay. As a couple, the room might be a tad on the small side but again unbeatable prices. Being able to stay in Tokyo for roughly a week with flight from Europe and hotel for under 1000 euro is unprecedented.
You are within 5-10 minutes walk of Asakusa Station which has direct trains from/to Narita airport and Haneda airport. You are in 5-10 minutes walk of Tawaramachi Subway Station on the centrally located Ginza/Shibuya line. You can be in Shibuya/Shinjuku in 40 minutes on the opposite side of the city, you can be in Akihabara in 15 minutes, Ueno in 10, Tokyo Station/Ginza in 20.
Again highly recommended to stay at this ryokan, including the Asakusa area. Lots of great restaurants close by, good shops, fun street food stalls and nice sights closeby.
Definitely recommend a stay here if you want a simple affordable and decent stay in Tokyo.

You can take the shinkansen (bullet train) from Nagoya to Tokyo Station. From Tokyo Station go to Akihabara, via the Yamanote or Keihin-Tohoku lines on platforms 3 or 4. It's only two stops, about 5 minutes.
At Akihabara, come out of the JR station and go to the Tsukuba Express line. It is underground and there are several entrances around the JR station. I don't know if you can use your JR pass on that line, but it is only 200 yen anyway. Go two stops to Asakusa and you will find yourself a few minutes walk from Toukaisou!
