So my family (wife and two kids) and I took a road trip around Western France. Hotel de France has been on my bucket list as I am a hopeless petrolhead. If you are after the motorsport history woven into the hotel then you won't need this review to convince you to go, however if you are not a petrolhead...

We had a very pleasant stay at this hotel on our way down to the Dordogne. Room was good ,well appointed and very comfortable, the pool was OK, certainly warm but barely deep enough. Excellent location and very pleasant staff. The only criticism I would have is that the food, while being good was rather a limited menu and rather...

an amazing place to stay on our way down to Charentes Maritime. Very friendly receptionist, beautiful and very comfortable rooms with fans and a brilliant pool. We had drinks in the busy bar and dinner in the hotel both of which were great. We will definitely be back, what a find!

We booked this room for one night on our way home from the South. It is truly fabulous. The rooms are very well appointed and the restaurant had splendid service and exquisite food. A very convivial hotel all round and highly recommended. Will stay again.

Obviously arriving at the Hotel de France in a low Italian Sportscar with many other pretty automobiles is a regular occurance in La Chartre, since the hotel was taken over a few years ago the investment made by the new owners is clearly visible, from the comfort of the reception area to the tasteful decor in the rooms. The welcome...

We chose this hotel because of its history with the Le Mans 24hrs race. However, the room, facilities and restaurant stood out alone. Sally was a delight and we'd love to come back one day (perhaps with a racing car next time).

I have been an irregular visitor here for the past 25 years, but this was my first visit since the new English owners have taken over. It has been totally rejuvenated with an atmosphere as good as it ever was in its heyday, but the rooms are much nicer than ever before. It was great to see Christophe is still...

We stayed at This Hotel overnight on our journey down to the South. A warm welcome from the English host. Our room was towards the rear of the Hotel & overlooked a side street. Comfortable , rather hot, but adequate for our stay- just watch out for the beams in the bathroom!! We eat in the restaurant which was very...

We have now stayed here three times and would highly recommend the hotel. Sally and Paul are great hosts and nothing is too much trouble. Fresh milk is given on arrival and assistance with luggage. The restaurant is very good, but this last time it was closed (Sunday evening) and we ate in the Brasserie, where there is a menu...

We stayed here for two nights in this nice hotel in the lovely village of Chartre sur Le Loir, which has some lovely little shops and is very quaint. We had a deluxe double room which was great, very nicely appointed and had obviously been refurbished fairly recently. It had a super king bed and tea and coffee making facilities...

With a sun drenched terrace, a superb restaurant, bar, inviting swimming pool and gardens that back onto the Loir River, the hotel serves as a comfortable and relaxing base from which to explore the countless delights this region has to offer. The Hotel de France, famous for its long association with the teams, drivers and cars of the Le Mans 24 hours race, overlooks the main square of the charming town of La Chartre-sur-Le-Loir, in the Sarthe department of the Pays de la Loire region in north-western France. The airport at Tours and several main line train stations are also close by. Used as a destination of choice for leaders of state, film stars and motor sport royalty, the hotel has welcomed the President of France, President Kennedy's family, Steve McQueen, Sir Stirling Moss OBE and a regular guest for the Le Mans 24 hours, Derek Bell MBE.
